Dr. Maxwell Maltz (March 10, 1889-April 7, 1975) was an American cosmetic surgeon who created his self-improvement phenomenon, Psycho-Cybernetics, at age 61, after an already varied, colorful, and exceptionally successful career as a surgeon, writer, and speaker. Published in 1960, Psycho-Cybernetics has sold over 30 million copies since its original printing and remains a classic of self-help, self-improvement, and personal development. According to Dr. Maltz, the psycho-cybernetics process involves steering your mind to productive, valuable goals to reach peace of mind. In Psycho-Cybernetics and all the books that followed, Dr. Maltz speaks to the importance of a healthy self-image, which is the roadmap to creating a better quality of life.
Dr. Maltz made his groundbreaking discovery when he realized his patients expected to feel happy after he gave them perfect new faces. However it was the inner scars that still needed attention. Cosmetic surgery could not cure feelings of unhappiness, worthlessness, and insecurity. Dr. Maltz suggested that many people "see themselves" inaccurately, their perceptions distorted by unchallenged and often erroneous beliefs embedded in their subconscious minds. After counseling hundreds of patients with his evolving "success conditioning techniques," Dr. Maltz published his findings, in 1960, in the original Psycho-Cybernetics.
Psycho-Cybernetics became an instant bestseller and made Dr. Maltz one of the most in-demand motivational speakers throughout the 1960s and the early 1970s. He went on to amass "case history" material. He produced numerous seminars, workshops, radio broadcasts, and more than a dozen books, all applying Psycho-Cybernetics to different purposes, from business success to athletic achievement to sex life improvement. This book is a classic reprint and part of a new Maxwell Maltz library to continue to make Dr. Maltz's timeless work available to new generations.

Maxwell Maltz was an American cosmetic surgeon and author of Psycho-Cybernetics, which was a system of ideas that he claimed could improve one's self-image leading to a more successful and fulfilling life.
What has been stated is perhaps known to everyone but either we don't realize it sufficiently to adopt it or just ignore it. In this sense, the book appears to be quite useful as it drives home the utility of evolving a self image in a manner that it becomes fulfilling. The author categorically asserts that "the self image is your own conception of the sort of person you are. It is a product of past experiences, successes and failures". And, this "self-image is the foundation stone of our whole personality". He has a solution to offer in the "positive thinking" that "can be used as a kind of crutch for the same old self-image". He even quotes the great English author to drive home his point: "There's only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving; and that is your own self" and the "the most important exploration which faces mankind -and your personality- today is not the exploration of outer space, but the exploration of inner space". There is a clear belief that each individual is unique and, hence, comparisons are odious. The "simple truth is that you are neither 'superior' nor 'inferior' to your fellow human beings." The book goes on to provide not merely the diagnosis but also a prescription on how to go about improving your self-esteem.
Fromm has a perspective that is comforting and empowering (if you can look past his sexist and colonialist ideas from the 1960s). He suggests ways to challenge the anxious, self-critical and self-loathing thoughts that can easily become habitual in this society. Fromm learned his theories from observing patients during his career as a prominent plastic surgeon.
Fromm suggests that the way we imagine ourselves in our mind becomes reality, and so we need to hold a mental image of ourselves in our best moments. Some other ways he writes about to improve our self image are to learn to relax, pursue our own idea of success, be our genuine selves, accept our weaknesses, and be compassionate toward others.
You have many images of yourself but it how your picture of yourself that you can picture yourself better. Just because you are carrying the picture, it doesn't mean it is you. The brain tell you what to do based on your past. Your future can only be determined by the action of your present which motivated by the past.
Doing mental boxing with yourself- to win and overwhelm your current unpleasant picture of yourself. Imagine the theater of your mind. You control your fate and your future.
I read this shortly after finishing psycho-cybernetics.
Another great book and following identical principles but when you read something so important it’s good to stuff it into your brain with force to make sure it definitely goes in.
Mindset is critical and one of best ways to influence mindset is through the constructive use of imagination. Imagination is the key to influencing the subconscious mind which is more powerful than we can fully comprehend.
powerful book to heal those scars not visible. Following the excercises will ensure you are at your best in the quickest possible time but effort is required.
I read this book almost every day on the way to work and it brought me a sense of peace and contentment unlike doomscrolling Tiktok videos. I really enjoyed this book and would love to reread it in the future. I will drop a book review about all the things I've learnt and have yet to internalise but my verdict is you should definitely read this book and find your own takeaways.
The only problem I could find is that since this was written a while back, some of the references are dated and some parts have Christian undertones which aren't universally accessible but not in a preachy way.

“You can change— but you must be willing to work at change.”
The pretense of this book can be summed up by this sentence. Self Image and Self Esteem are basically the same thing. Work on seeing yourself more positively and it pays off.
Honestly I was having great anxiety before I started reading this book. But this book really made me calm and it assured if I visualise good things they will happen.
