Obsidian Queen #1

Guild of Secrets

Rate this book
Previously published under Shari's pen name, Shannon Lynn Cook, the Obsidian Queen series returns in an updated edition. This contemporary fantasy is full of magic and humor, perfect for readers who enjoy swoony romance and sparking chemistry.

If twenty-two-year-old Madeline Bennet knows anything for certain, it’s that she’ll get her desired apprenticeship with the Royal Guild. After all, her family is well-connected, and she’s all but dating the grand duke’s nephew.

But Madeline does not get her apprenticeship. Instead, she finds herself working with a trio of knight marshals, traipsing around the US, arresting all manner of magical miscreants. And if tracking trolls, running from murderous pixies, and stumbling into a dangerous web of criminal activity isn’t enough to keep her occupied, there’s also Gray, Jonathan, and Eric—the knights themselves.

They’re strong. They’re skilled. They’re ridiculously handsome. And they don’t want her on their team.

The four must play nice for six months, but can they even manage a week? And what will happen if the knights realize the royal advisor’s daughter isn’t just a prissy girl in heels? She’s harboring a dark secret—one that could prove to be more dangerous than even Madeline imagined.

Author's Note: This spicy-sweet series is intended for adult audiences. Also, while the books have multiple potential love interests, at the end of the series, Madeline will end up with ONE man only.

2 stars // read June 2023

Disclaimers:
1. My review is subjective
2. I'm blonde so don't get upset about the stereotyping in this review... I don't believe that *all* blondes are ditzy ;)

Actual Review:

Expectation: a fun twist on the "female protagonist pretends to be a ditzy blonde while hiding her true powers from her teammates" trope

Reality:

-Female protagonist isn't really pretending to be a ditzy blonde... she kind of is one? She went to finishing school for becoming a hospitality/event organizer person and so she's definitely out of her element for most of the book, so you can't entirely blame her. She just wasn't very likable. (Insert scene where one guy gets her tea [which is nice of him, right?] and she throws a fit because it's not coffee... calm down, sister)

-As for trying to keep her role as a Fox hidden... (mild spoilers)

-All of the interesting bits of the plot and the world get overshadowed by how much romance there is. Madeleine is really into (almost) every guy character and flirts with them (even while she has a boyfriend), all of the guys flirt with her when they're not swooning over other girls... Madeleine even says at one point: "And I know it makes me the worst kind of girl, considering I've already kissed two other men in less than a week, but my stomach clenches at his nearness."

Madeleine, my girl, maybe you should just... take a break from romantic relationships for a while?

So... suffice it to say, I wasn't a huge fan of Guild of Secrets. If you love romance, especially when there's multiple love interests, then you'll probably like it more.

I love finding a new Urban Fantasy series to follow. I broke my own rule (of not starting a series unless the whole thing is complete) and gave this one a try. I was quickly pulled into the story and it kept me glued to the pages. The worldbuilding was good, I thought it had a unique take on Fae and it was fun learning about the different factions. The story moves along quickly, and we're introduced to quite a few main characters. Has a good set-up for the rest of the series and leaves you wanting to grab the next book, but enough closure to not leave you totally hanging.

While I did like the characters, I just have to say, Madeline came off as pretty fickle. Putting it mildly, her interest in different guys jumped around a lot. Part of the problem, and the story's biggest weakness, is the whole thing takes place in a week. I have no idea why it needed to happen in a span of just a few days. Why not have after the first chapter or so, a time jump of a month or so at least? For me that would make the relationships a little more believable and the overall story a bit stronger. I did like the Knights a lot though, and the witty banter throughout. The characters are fun and intrigued me enough I want to see what happens with them next.

Overall, its a fun Urban Fantasy and entertaining read. Would recommend to anyone that's a fan of the genre.

Content (PG13):
Romance: Clean, some steamy kisses, mild innuendo
Violence: Mild Nothing overly graphic or disturbing

“Forever and always, Madeline, until I take my last breath, *no matter what path you choose*, I’m yours to command. Do to me as you will.”

*shivers* Holy cannoli how is this book SO GOOD?! Maybe I’m biased since I love a good cast of dude characters, but this book hit just when I was hankering for a good urban fantasy.

Shari captures an amazing magic system, sprinkled with humor and heat (without the spice 😉), and pulls you in along with Madeline as she learns to navigate the side of her world she’s not used to.

I am already starting book two, Princess of Shadows, and I can’t wait to see what happens with Madeline, Gray, Rafe, Eric and Jonathan!

Five out of five!

Content: gets heated sexually at a couple points but doesn’t move beyond kissing, mentions of cheating multiple times, multiple murders both on and off page, some scenes with scantly clad women.

This was a tough one to rate, mostly because I didn't really like any of the characters. And the main character I think I liked least is Madeline, who was just such a spoiled, vapid asshole.

Gray was a close second in terms of asshole. Eric was okay, but was pretty sidelined. Same with Jonathan. Overall, it felt like there was a lot of baked in misogyny - spoiled girly-girl society princess becomes a knight, queue the hilarity! But it wasn't hilarious to me - her high maintenance crap, Gray snarling at her, the manly guys hooking up with bimbos at bars every night. I mean, yeesh. Then we get to find out they have a history of hooking up with whatever female gets put on the team, and that just felt gross. Particularly gross when Madeline pinged from terrible guy (Finn, who inarguably is The Worst in this book) to terrible guy (Gray, "alpha" douchebag who is mean to her all while being super attracted to her, apparently, which is my least favorite kind of asshole) to terrible guy (Rafe, who was a dickhead and also seemed determined to use her for some personal baggage) to terrible guy (Jonathan...they flirted, not sure if there's a thing there though he indicated he was up for it if she was, so clearly she has some kind of superpowered vagina magnetism, but he's a manwhore picking up chicks every time they have a couple hours downtime on missions).

I'm going to read the next because I'm curious about the overall story. And also because Madeline got progressively less vapid as the book went on, so maybe she'll suck less in the next one. We'll see.

ETA: I lied, not reading onward. The more space I got from this, the less I liked it. So I read some reviews of the following books to see if the characters become less terrible, and it seems like no, so I'm out. Life is too short.

Absolutely SO MUCH FUN. This is my 2nd read, and it still holds a top place among my favorites in this genre.

Why this book rocks-

- the FMC is entirely unique in an awesome, endearing way. She’s drop-dead gorgeous and knows it, but it doesn’t make her a snot. She embraces femininity to the point that she’s rather high maintenance- nails, spa, designer clothes, long beauty routine, high heels, etc. AND I LOVE HER FOR IT. Yeah, you’d think the rich girl routine would be tiresome, but she’s hilarious and sweet and funny and her character arc is fabulous. She’s super confident but not arrogant, and she occasionally DOES feel vulnerable and unconfident at times, just like every human being. She’s not cut out for combat- totally out of her element here- but she has a quiet strength and competency that keeps her from being a damsel in distress. I LOVE THIS CHARACTER. You rarely get a completely lovable blonde, gorgeous, flirty, confident, high maintenance female protagonist. It’s such a fun change! I’m here for it!

- the CHEMISTRY. Oh, the chemistry. Every page has sizzling sexual tension. Nothing inappropriate or explicit, but it’s still hot. She’s surrounded by a team of male hotties and although they’re not all seriously pursuing her, they all genuinely care for her and they flirt with her in a teasing, delicious way. There are two love interests who are introduced separately along the course of the book. I ended up jumping ship with one of them and was firmly in the other’s camp until he turned overly intense in the last page. Now I’m waffling and they are both good options. And I can’t wait to read more!!!

- the plot, pacing, writing, banter, magic world building, use of beloved romantic tropes, characters, twists, cliffhanger ending that left me needing MORE but not in a cruel way… ALL OF IT was FANTASTIC. And it was funny! I honestly was laughing out loud in multiple parts. (The squirrels!) Madeline’s internal dialogue was a riot and I totally connected with her.

ONE OF THE BEST.

Content:

Language- no swearing

Sex- no sex, some making out. One of the male love interests has a history of past relationships (“slept with”) but he’s not a total player (thank goodness- I can’t stand the “casual-sex-is-totally-fine” type of hero). Nothing inappropriate but this book is for an older crowd than the usual Tapscott fare. And that’s what I liked about it so much, tbh. (Give us more, Shari!)

(*Aside: Madeline believes sex to be important and reserved for genuine love. None of this “it didn’t mean anything” or “fall into bed” garbage. I love her even more for that. And although she wears high heels and mini skirts, she isn’t ever risqué. She’s tasteful and elegant. She doesn’t objectify her body. I REALLY liked that too.)

Cover- this cover is fabulous! One trillion times better than the old cover. I love love love it.

I read this on KU. I would buy this for my personal collection.

How I rated the series:

- Guild of Secrets- 5 stars!!
- Princess of Shadows- 5++ stars!! (my fave)
- Knights of Obsidian- 4.5 stars
- Traitor of the Entitled (novella about Eric and Chloe)- 1 star (DNF @60%)
- Creatures of Midnight- 4.5 stars
- Queen of Aparia- 2 stars

Every bit as good as I remembered...

I read this when it was first released under her Shannon Lynn Cook pseudonym and was immediately enthralled with this wonderful world & its characters. I even pestered my husband til he read it, & he became a fan as well.

At first, Madeline seems like a Legally Blonde or Buffy kind of gal, but she's no ditz - she's witty & clever. She's just had the rug pulled out from under her pre-planned life & is now finding herself increasingly out of her element.

After discovering painful things about her first love interest, she finds herself emotionally adrift. Some readers are frustrated that she keeps "trying on" different guys instead of immediately finding her "true love", but in the context of the story, it totally makes sense. Though she's flirty, she's clearly looking for someone more solid to hold onto than her ex.

She's trying to figure out how to cope with her new position, but it turns out to have a frighteningly steep learning curve. By the breathless end of the book, she's given a most unexpected reveal that guarantees you'll want to read the next installment. I'm so happy I don't have to wait long for it this time!

*ROMANCE LEVEL: about a PG-13; passionate kisses, definitely more adult in the relationship content (ie not for teens), but spicy clean - nothing graphic

*POTENTIAL TRIGGER WARNING: The story includes a serial rapist/murderer who the Knights are trying to catch, & while there are no graphic details, there are a few scenes of menace that are likely to be difficult for those who are sensitive

Tapscott nails fun, immersive stories! And this urban fantasy was no exception. The stakes were high, the banter hilarious, and the audiobook an overall nice companion for when you’re knocked out by a migraine.

This is definitely ADULT fantasy. Still closed door and no spice, but the romance is steamier than her YA/NA books.

There’s a rather impressive love square… pentagon?… going on, so thank you to the bookish friend who told me who Madeline ends up with so I don’t have to stress out. 😂 Our FMC is a bit of brat, but I’m curious how she’ll grow through the series!

Content: comment about a smutty romance novel; passionate makeouts and innuendo; girls in bikinis; mentions of cheating; mention of a guy repeatedly falling into bed with women; comments of sleeping with a guy (not true); a guy has flings

Nope

I tried to push through the story because I was interested in the 'police work'/intrigue but the plot seemed like a thinly veiled excuse to allow as many make out sessions as possible with as many men as possible for our wilying flower main character. It was dizzying and frankly, gross. The "smart" yet helpless blond is falling into every man arms- whoever looks her way hard enough, she's running her hands all over, undressing, manipulating and being manipulated. This book is not 'clean'. It skirts the very very edge of 'clean', doing plenty but just not sex. I'm disappointed. 2 stars because the author is still a good writer who created a compelling plot, but allowed lust (not love) to consume the novel.

Now that this series is re-released under Shari Tapscott's main name and released as audiobook, I'm finally picking it up!

Madeline isn't my favorite type of main girl lead. She's preppy, primpy, spoiled, a bit of a brat, and draws in men like flies to honey. That said, all those things makes her an interesting lead for an urban fantasy, which usually trends toward gritty heroines rather than ones who worry about their manicures. I look forward to seeing her growth through the series! She already has a lot of growth just over the course of this book!

The storyline itself is actually quite interesting, even intriguing. It also has Shari Tapscott’s typical writing style, which is always gripping and one of my favorites. Unfortunately, there is too much ogling over male characters and excessively lustful thoughts throughout. Madeline has serious guy issues and seems to be unable to control herself from pursuing every one she comes across. It’s quite ridiculous and rather annoying… The story might have me, though, and it’s almost certain I’m going to continue with book 2. Hopefully she picks a guy soon. We’ll see.

Content:
There are kissing scenes too steamy for my comfort (though it doesn’t go beyond kissing), and an overabundance of lustful thoughts. There are mentions of characters having sex, though not with any detail and not within this storyline. There is no foul language. There is some violence, but it’s not excessive. There is magic. There are no references to faith or God.

Almost done with this read and I’m sorry but I hate when people have a job to do and they think more about their love interest(s) than the job. 😭 The first chapter hooked me, and finding out she had high grades gave me hope for how she would interact with the guys, but she’s just……not very deep as a person. And why is Gray always growling 😣 and why are they both okay with flirting when she is with his brother for most of the book and then freshly BROKEN UP WITH his brother?? Rage calling her sweetheart two days into knowing her?? They have strong morals when it comes to the mission but loose morals interpersonally? It’s exhausting 😩 two stars instead of one because I love the concept.

An Interesting World of Magic and Corruption

Shari L Tapscott created an interesting world. I love the different types of magic, and the animal nicknames for the factions. I can’t wait to learn more about this world.

My only complaint is the love triangle, love square? Madeline has at least three different love interests already! Personal pet peeve. I’ll still keep reading because I’m too intrigued not to.

Content: PG-13 (innuendo, talk of prior sexual relationships, mild violence)

Fantastic start to this series!

I absolutely loved this first book in the Obsidian Queen series! Be prepared for a healthy dose of mystery, adventure, attraction, and snark as Madeline navigates the challenges associated with being tossed into a Knight’s Guild unprepared. She is such a fun protagonist! I loved her sass, confidence, and good heart. She is definitely twisted around with so many handsome guys around her constantly, and although I have my suspicions, I’m excited to see how everything plays out. Drop what you’re doing and be prepared to spend long hours immersed in this world of magic, intrigue, adventure, and swoony moments!

It was okay. I found it somewhat interesting, but I didn't like how the FMC was so focused on chasing after men. I mean, maybe you've been planning on marrying a rich guy your whole life, but that doesn't mean your life needs to revolve around finding men to kiss! The plot's pretty interesting, though. Reminded me of the Between Worlds series, but without the graphic violence.

Content: Clean-ish? There were no explicit scenes, but there are a LOT of kiss scenes, and they're pretty spicy, at least according to my own standards.

That was fun. A bit silly and shallow but hey it was a fun quirky read and I liked it. The main character is supposed to be spoiled and selfish and hard to love and it really worked. There was so much about this that was over the top but it was fast paced and had some fun tension between many of the characters and the main character. Love triangle here we come. Not really sure who to cheer for yet and if I can stick around long enough to find out. So on to the next, lets see how long this series will hold me.

Wonderful series!

I just finished reading the whole series. It was wonderful!! It was entertaining, mysterious, romantic, and everything else a good book series should be. There are five books in this series, and you should read them all! They all lead into the next without a lot of repeating of information.

This had some elements I enjoyed; the world was interesting, the plot was well thought out, and it was well written. I found the characters a little boring, though, and there was too much focus on flirting between pretty much every character and the main character. It also had a trope I don’t like very much, which is a woman with lots of power and no idea how to wield it, making her effectively weak.

😬😬😬
I love Shari Tapscott. But I do not love Shari Tapscott writing as Shannon Lynn Cook. Nope.

Things I did not like:
1- This is most definitely NOT a romance book. It is a lust book. Romance and lust are not the same. It falls into my “kind of comfortable-ish reading this” category, but it’s for sure not my preference. Nothing more than kissing happened. But if anything in the rest of the series went further than what happened here, it’d fall in my “not comfortable reading this” category.

2- Because I have read and loved all previous Shari Tapscott romance and fantasy books, I thought this would be right up my alley. What I did not realize when I started this book is it is a reverse harem novel. I didn’t even know that was a type of story. I’m guessing this is a common story idea as it has an actual name for the category. I have absolutely zero intention of reading another one. It’s not cute. It’s weird. Pick a guy and move on with the story!! Having five or six ridiculously handsome men falling all over one girl and her being into all of them is not only unbelievable, it’s gross. Bring in some more female characters into the story. (And not the kind Madeline would be jealous of. Actual, good friends who help in the plot!) Add in a second romance story line or possibly a love triangle. But for the love, stay away from a handful of men and one girl. Blech.

3- Where was the plot??? If all of the innuendos were removed, this would be a 45 minute read at best. The story was driven by getting characters where they needed to be to make the next innuendo. Not much actually happened. I do not plan to finish the series, but based off this experience, I’d bet by removing some of these pointless scenes, the whole thing could be one stand alone novel or maybe a two book series. (And I’m sure the story would be great! Because I know Shari Tapscott. It’s why I kept going even though I wasn’t liking it very much. But stretching out what could be one book into multiple books so you can add so much extra junk in it… does not convince me to continue with the story.)

4- Madeline isn’t my type of heroine. Why bring your cat on these trips? Why bring three suitcases for a few days trip? Why mention so much about needing to eat salads and watch your figure and the price of your clothes? That type of thing irritates me.

5- Also, and this is a dumb thing to be irritated about, but I still find myself irritated anyway. No matter how many times I told myself, “GRAY. His name is pronounced GRAY” I still kept calling him “Gary.” I just could not get my eyes to read that name correctly. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Most definitely staying away from this series and probably Shannon Lynn Cook stories in the future. Hoping Shari Tapscott sticks with books written under her name and not her pen name because those I’ll read and love every time. I’d love to see more books in the 27 Ways series!! Or her stand alone romance novels!!

Guild of Secrets

Reader’s Notes:

– this is book 1 of 5 (6 including a novella)

– this is told from Madeline’s point of view

– kisses are heated/passionate; one instance of kissing occurs after the guy’s shirt is removed

– there are a few mentions of people having slept together (not events that occur during this story, talking about in the past)

– there is some fantasy violence (including mentions of people/creatures being killed or bleeding/injured) & a kidnapping

– more content warnings for the rest of the series (and her other books) they can be found on Shari’s website: https://shariltapscott.com/content-gu...

Review:

I was a bit uncomfortable with the passionate kisses, but they did not take up much of the story (or even longer than a small section of a page) so I did not remove a star because of this. I’m not sure who I’m hoping to eventually end up with Madeline at this point, but there are a couple of different possibilities of who it could be (as she has interest in a few different people).

I loved Madeline’s character! She is very stubborn and determined to have her way and/or willing to cause others to regret pushing her to do something she didn’t want to (like getting up early or randomly going out on an assignment). I loved her sassy personality and that she brought her cat with her if she was going to be away from home for a length of time. I also loved how clever she could be at times! It was great to see her pretending that certain powers affected her (when they didn’t at all) in order to pass under the radar and learn something new about the people around her. Some of my favorite scenes/moments in this story included: Madeline & Gray clashing, Madeline standing up for herself, Madeline’s purposeful & accidental uses of her magic, the group messing with each other and holding funny moments over each other’s heads, and Madeline getting to use a taser multiple times in the story.

Summary:

Madeline expected to be given an apprenticeship with the Royal Guild as she’s trained for, not to be told she is to keep an eye on a trio of knights while they chase down those who broke laws. And while the group does not like the idea of Madeline tagging along, they expect her to help out…with a taser. Can a taser even help against a huge troll or other magical species they need to track down? It’s not like Madeline can even use her full powers to keep herself safe. If she slips, then the team might hate her even more than they already do, because her kind are mainly known as liars and cheats. Can Madeline make it through the next six months with them in order to get back to the life she’s always wanted?

Great read!

I really enjoyed this book. It’s fast paced, you want to get to know all the characters, and there’s magic set in real world settings (yay Colorado!) A little on the spicier side than what I normally read, but still clean for those who prefer clean! Add to your list if you enjoy magical characters living in the real world with some flirting and laugh-out-loud conversation that keeps the story flowing!
