Mei Dansen became a romance book lover after snooping through her mother’s hidden stash of historical bodice rippers. (Those painted covers were melodramatic masterpieces and one day, a similar cover will adorn at least one of Mei’s books! A girl’s gotta have goals, right?)

After many sideways and wayward moves in life, Mei is currently settled in a suburb of Washington, D.C. with her loving husband and sometimes-loving feline. In her spare time, she daydreams about romance plots and someday attending a nearby BTS concert.

This final book jumps into the future. It kicks off with her graduating and then going out into the real world. I love that it focuses on a lot of insecurities and real life issues, like the previous books.

For me, it would have been a 5 star if it felt more wrapped up. It ends with more of a HFN vibe than a HEA. I don’t know if there’s a possibility for another book sometime down the line or if the author wants to leave it more open ended. I’m just a reader who likes the warm feels of the full story and how all the characters end up. There is an epilogue but I was disappointed that they never all sat down and openly discussed the future and all of their end goals.

I understand the reasons why the author spent the first chunk of the book allowing them to brood and have conflict, but for the final book I was left frustrated. Especially after 4 years of a relationship, most of which was long distance, you’d think they’d be better at communicating.

That being said, I’m still thrilled to have found this author and can’t wait to read future books from them! I’ve already downloaded the stand alone spin off focused on Jenn.

Mild spoiler

I commend the author for not giving into the temptation to write the typical happy ending or cordial acceptance for the mother daughter relationship. This was a hard storyline to get right and I feel she absolutely nailed it. There should not have been a reconciliation and I’m beyond happy that there wasn’t. The father story line aside, the way she speaks and treats her daughter is careless and emotionally abusive. Especially bringing up the Instagram bs from years prior. People from other families came to her out of concern for her daughter. Instead of calling to check in with her or going to visit and show concern, she held onto that ammo to deploy years later in a direct confrontation. Deplorable motherly instincts. No congratulations for graduating, even though she’s the first generation to. No interest in her future plans. And I think, sadly, that’s something a lot of readers can relate to.

Actually teared up a little after spending three books with these characters. I wanted some more catharsis with Ava and her mother but it didn’t take away from enjoyment. I really wish there would be more books with Ava and her guys but it makes sense to end it here. Definitely won’t be checking out Jenn’s book.
