著者について
1956年3月、熊本県水俣市生まれ。1977年2月、週刊少年ジャンプにて「恐るべき子供たち」でデビュー。同年4月、「8時半の決闘」で赤塚賞準入選。同年9月、週刊少年ジャンプにて「すすめ!!パイレーツ」連載開始。ギャグ漫画家として本格的にスタートをきる。以後「ひのまる劇場」「ストップ!! ひばりくん!」「エイジ」「寿五郎ショウ」「なんとかなるでショ!」「BOXERケン」などの作品を発表。1983年よりフリーになり、イラストレーターとしての活動も開始。1992年から5年間担当した「デニーズ」のメニューイラストをはじめとして、雑誌、広告、小説本の装丁、CDジャケット、アニメ映画のキャラクターデザイン等、幅広く手掛け現在に至っている。1992年には短編集「爆発ディナーショー」で、第38回文藝春秋漫画賞受賞。

About the author

Hisashi Eguchi (江口寿史 , Eguchi Hisashi), is a Japanese illustrator, manga creator and animation concept artist. Eguchi is considered one of Japan's most prominent illustrators of female characters. He has been nicknamed 'king of pop', for the strong influence of pop-art in the evolution of his drawing style.
Eguchi was born in the Japanese prefecture of Kumamoto in 1956. He started his career and earned fame as a gag manga cartoonist in the late 70's. After winning the 1977 Young Jump Award, Eguchi serialised his first comic series Susume!! Pirates in the pages of 'Weekly Shōnen Jump' from 1977 to 1980. His next and most famous comic series, Stop!! Hibari-kun!, was serialized in the same magazine from 1981 to 1983. The manga is a romantic comedy where the main female character, Hibari, is a cross-dressing teenager boy. It was adapted into an anime by Fuji Television in 1983-1984.
In the animation field, Eguchi worked as a character designer for the movies Roujin Z, Spriggan and Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue.
Nowadays Eguchi mostly keeps himself occupied as an illustrator for Japanese magazines and advertisement.

The humour was very hit and miss, though that may be due to cultural differences and the march of time, I don't have much in common with early 80s Japan. Really liked Hibari and her no nonsense attitude. This is essentially a trans comic story about making other people accept Hibari for the girl she is before much of the terminology even existed. The romance plot was cute, but like a lot of romance manga it did that frustrating thing where it had three pages of relationship development sandwiched between four issues.

Its dated and even a little offensive at times, but no where near as much as I was expecting for 1982. It ends really, really abruptly, like the story just stops after introducing a new character, a highly detailed trans boy and then turn the page for the final credits.

definition of a dated book. the offensive cultural themes and jokes completely ruined for the immersion for me at times and just made me sigh and roll my eyes as i scroll past it hoping it’s not on the next chapter. seriously could have had amazing trans rep not only for trans women but men as well when the trans male character came it at the end. unfortunately this manga was stopped on short notice but we can at least be happy with how it ended and hopeful with how the relationship between the MC and Hibari might have bloomed. Seriously was gearing up to be one of my favorite mangas so many genuinely funny, heartfelt, sad, and happy moments all ruined by uncomfortable jokes that seriously could’ve been left out.
