Daniel Manus Pinkwater is an author of mostly children's books and is an occasional commentator on National Public Radio. He attended Bard College. Well-known books include Lizard Music, The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death, Fat Men from Space, Borgel, and the picture book The Big Orange Splot. Pinkwater has also illustrated many of his books in the past, although for more recent works that task has passed to his wife Jill Pinkwater.
Groovy older Pinkwater book, illustrated by the man himself. The front flap claims that this is a how-to book for when you meet a pickle creature. The back flap claims that it is a true story. The book itself is a lot like Hoboken Chicken Emergency- a kid is sent to the store and comes back with a big animal friend.
My daughter loved the illustrations of the pickle creature. She said, "All Daniel Pinkwater books have whatever happening and the adults are okay with everything."
If you can believe a grandmother sends a kid to the store to buy a single pickle, you can also believe that kid discovers a pickle creature and brings him home. And that's the magic of Daniel Pinkwater.
***I just discovered that there is a Pickles: Juvenile Fiction classification by the Library of Congress, and I am now determined to read as many pickle stories as possible.
