Two hundred years after the Salem witch trials of 1692, which resulted in the hangings of 19 women and men, Anna Williams is living an uneventful life in Essex County, Massachusetts. But there is more to Anna than meets the eye as she begins to discover her unique abilities. Anna must choose one of two paths in order to follow her true calling and Braden Cole, a hardened gunslinger looking for redemption, may be the one man who can help her along the way. From the minds behind the hit series "Grimm Fairy Tales," comes a new series unlike anything you've seen!
"This is Anna Williams. The one I choose to ride with ... the one who has a power inside her that can help others ... or, if she chooses, destroy them."
Angry cowboys, powerful witches, a jersey devil, one pregnant succubus and a few unknowns are some of the characters found in Zenescope's first volume of "Salem's Daughter".
Braden Cole and Anna Williams team up after they are brought together by a common enemy.
Braden assists in Anna's rescue and immediately after, they are forced to flee town.
Anna is just beginning to discover the extent of her magical abilities and although there are many questions left unanswered, she is slowly unraveling her talents and putting them to use.
She begins to use her "visions" as clues to guide herself, along with Braden, to places where they can help others. They aide in solving murders and slaying monsters.
While the story was enjoyable, the artwork left a lot to be desired.
Of course, Greg Horn did a fabulous job on the cover, but I've never seen a piece of work by Horn that I haven't liked. Very talented man.
While I won't be following the single issues of "Salem's Daughter : The Haunting", I will pick up the graphic novel whenever it's released.
Salem's Daughter Vol.1 In the first story Anna Williams and Braden Cole go in search of a man that killed his wife (unknowingly). He finally confesses he thought it was a dream. Then she came to him and seduced him. He shows them the house and they explain to him that she’s a succabus. They have to take her out and the baby if it’s already born. Anna uses her powers to defeat the succubus and the man takes his son somewhere far away instead of killing him.
In the second story, Anna is approached by a man that she seems to know (and not trust). He says he can tell her more about her powers, but she sends him away. She’s visited by a boy named Jared who tries to rape her but she uses her powers and burns (and kills) him. Braden comes to the town to track down Darius (who he’s been looking for nine weeks to take out his vengeance for killing his wife and child). He visits a pub and the Sheriff is called because he has a problem giving up his weapons.
In the third story, Anna is locked up for suspected witchcraft. She’s visited by her father and Jared’s mother and father. Jared’s father is furious. His mother just wants to know why. The sheriff speaks to them privately and tells them about the rumors. Anna is visited by the same man who visited her earlier (whom we find out is Darius) and he tries to talk her into letting him help her escape. She doesn’t want anything to do with it. Braydon shows up and words are exchanged and then gun fire. Darius is shot but doesn’t die.
Braden gets Anna out of there. He wants to get her out of town but she says she has to speak to her father first. So, he agrees but says they can’t stay long. He tells her father that people are now looking for her because they think she’s a witch. He tells him about Darius who has the power to control people and put thoughts in their head. He suspects he’ll be looking for Anna soon and there might be some connection.
Anna’s father tells Braydon about how Anna’s mother died when she was a little girl. She had a gift. When she touched things, she could tell who the object belonged to and if they’re alive or dead. Anna also has a gift. She has visions. Before they can get out of town tho, the Sheriff finds them -discovering Anna is gone-. Darius is also there.
Anna is about to be hanged by the Sheriff and the townspeople. She pleads with the sheriff and tries to get him to see that he’s being controlled. Anna thinks about her mother telling her about different paths to talk (a easy one that leads to greed and a harder one with greater benefits). Darius appears to Anna again and says he can free her if she just says the word. She tells im to go to hell. He tells her she had her chance. The Sheriff is about to pull the lever but all of a sudden gun shots ring out.
Darius corners Anna (and is about to kill her?) but Braden swings in and blows his head off. Anna sees her father and rushes to him, but he’s been shot and dies. Before he dies, he tells her to go with Braden. Anna knows they have to leave, Darius will be back. She can still feel his presence. She convinces Braden to let her come with him. He’ll be her best chance of taking out Darius when she figures out her powers.
In the next story, Anna and Braden go to investigate a small town where children and animals are said to have been eaten by the Leeds Devil. They’re instructed to find a man named Micheal whose wife went missing, but Micheal isn’t the talkative type. So Anna and Braden check out his house (with a man named Samuel and some of the locals). He keeps saying his wife is resting and they’re disturbing her, but they find her corpse in the bed. One of the kids clothes are also found. Even tho Anna says it doesn’t feel right, Micheal is hung. Anna has another vision but says it isn’t clear (while touching the dead man’s hand). This story closes with Anna (dreaming?) she’s running from some kind of creature.
In the next story, Braden thinks about how he’s not sure if he did the right thing bringing Anna into this. He goes to Anna’s room but she isn’t there. She’s now somewhere not sure where she is. Then she sees the Leeds Devil. Lucus clasps his hand over her mouth and the Leeds Devil flies off. (He’s alive)-one of the missing kids-. The Sheriff comes out to search with Braden and Branden shares something he read in Micheal’s wife’s journal. She said he was in danger and after that he became paranoid and abusive. But why would Samuel’s name be mentioned? Samuel says he was just crazy.
Before he knows it, Braden’s being hit over the head and pushed down a cliff into an area with a drawn pentagram. Lucas says he can’t go back to Samuel. He beats on him and his mother. Anna says she won’t let that happen again. Samuel it turns out framed Micheal and feeds the creature with lesser men. Braden will be his next sacrifice. Then Anna rushes in, The Leeds Devil behind her. Anna uses her powers to take out the Leeds Devil.
My Thoughts: Not a bad story! I’ve had this comic on my “Want to Read” list for a long time. The beauty of doing “theme months” is that it can motivate you to get to books that just sit and sit. (This month is books on my Goodreads list). I thought this would be hard to get into since I didn’t know if it went with the Grimm series and for that series there are SO many spin-offs. I kind of lost track of where I stopped. But this one wasn’t part of that.
I also kind of feared that it would be emotionally hard to get through. Anything to do with the Salem witch trials is to read for me but thankfully it was “light”. Well, there was Micheal. I’m conflicted over how I felt about his hanging. He may not have killed his wife but he *beat* her. I know he was off in the head. Still… But this was interesting. I didn’t know what to expect from it but I’ll continue Volume 2

I was super excited about reading this comic.. Coz I am loving the drawings. I really enjoyed it aswell. Really exciting story, where you just want to know what powers Anna got. And how this all will end. And the drawings are really good. And it`s well written. Don`t have much more to say.. Will definitly check out the sequel :) And hopefully like that one as well..
Like that this comic has a good story to it, and is more then just good drawings :)
The covers are the best thing about this comic. The story sucks too hard to even mention. It's even worse than a regular witch story.
Anna Williams is approched by a man named Darius who she has seen in her dreams. He offers to train her in the use of her special powers. She refuses, so he stages a bit of a rape scene where Anna panicks and burns the rapist with her hands.
The wonderful, lurid, sexy covers are what grab your attention. The interior artwork is serviceable, containing a decent amount of action, cheesecake, and gore. The story is intriguing, but employs a few too many talking-head infodump pages. A nice idea for a comic that I wish had been executed with a higher level of artistry.
I bought this at the Zenescope booth at the Detroit FanFare last Fall. Ralph Tedesco was signing copies, so mine is autogtaphed. Like all Zenescope titles, this falls into the semi-Horror/ semi-cheesecake category, all done with a wink and a nod. I enjoyed this story quite a bit.
