Born Crucified

Rate this book
Now with a new foreword by Henry Blackaby and Tom Blackaby.

L. E. Maxwell writes, “The cross is the key to all situations as well as to all Scripture.”

By relating the cross as essential to the life of the believer, Professor L.E. Maxwell simply and practically shows how an understanding of our identification with Christ in his death and resurrection can lead to life as it was meant to be lived. It is by living with a cross-centered perspective that we can have both victory over sin and power to serve God well.

Maxwell's heart and vision for training up young poeple with the truth of God's Word and the necessity of evangelism shines forth in this little book. Readers know authenticity when they read it--and Maxwell exudes it.

It was the 19th century French preacher Lacordaire who said that the church was "born crucified," and L. E. Maxwell writes, “The cross is the key to all situations as well as to all Scripture.” Maxwell simply and practically shows how an understanding of our identification with Christ in his death and resurrection can lead to life as it was meant to be lived. It is by living with a cross-centered perspective that we can have both victory over sin and power to serve God well. This has gone onto my list of Ten Most Life-changing Books. If you want to understand how to live a truly powerful, victorious life as a Christian, Maxwell's "Born Crucified," Charles Trumbull's "Victory in Christ," and Ian Thomas's "The Indwelling Life of Christ" are three key, essential guides.

"Born Crucified" is a wonderful little read. It is a work that will indeed make you think and challenge you, it certainly brings out the call that one must die to themselves to follow Christ and to come to new life we must die to ourselves and carry our own crosses, this is a book that certainly makes you think on that and your life in Christ. To L.E. Maxwell the cross was everything, and it should be that to us who are believers as well.

One of the most critical issues for believers to understand is their union with Christ. In this book, Maxwell helps the reader understand his life in Christ. The focus of the book is on the believer’s union with Christ in His death and resurrection. The Scriptural focal point of the book is Romans 6 where we learn of our death with Christ to sin and our resurrection to new life. Some have been concerned that Maxwell’s book borders too closely to the Keswick view of sanctification. Really, there is little to nothing in the text to warrant such concern, from my perspective. The book is an encouraging book and one that will cause the reader to give some in-depth thought to how he can enjoy true freedom from sin.

Maxwell’s “Born Crucified” is a deep dive into what the Cross means to the followers of Christ. There are 25 chapters and 221 pages, each reading with the detail of a textbook.

The Lord blessed the author with a deep understanding of His Word, allowing for this thorough exhortation: “God’s way of victory is through crucifixion — deliverance is only through death.”

I made tons of notes reading through this work; below is one:
“Herein is displayed the genius of God. The Cross is indeed “the power of God and the wisdom of God. Calvary is God’s ax laid at the root of the first family tree. Adam is cut off. A new Adam ascends the throne.”

L. E. Maxwell does an amazing job explaining the biblical reality of the Cross and what it means for the believer. Maxwell rebukes the sad state of many Christians today who are content and comfortable in their own theology and lightweight version of Christianity. Maxwell encourages all who read this book to be dead to the world and alive in Christ, each and every day.

Arsenal for True Believers

This book is a deep examination of the Believer's life in the Lord Jesus Christ. Inspiring, educating, humbling, and uplifting. I also learned of other great writers, who led victorious lives in the faith. Oh to be steadfast and true to the Lord when diverse trials come a-calling ~ I will now read this book at least once a year. Such a treasure it is.

Throughly engrossing from start to finish. I think I highlighted more in this text than any other book I’ve read. The Cross is the crux of all that a Christian is. A must for the bookshelf. Brilliant.

The Power of the Cross

Come see. How many Christians fail to grasp the power of the cross. Nailed to the cross we struggle, never turning into the grace of being crucified, and claiming what new life means and how to preach it!

The first seven chapters are great, then it just feels like he is saying the same thing a different way. Definitely worth a read...

This is a rather hard book to read as it digs right into one's soul but it is helpful for rooting out sin and bad practices in one's life as a Christian. It is for missionaries who often conflict on the field so is relevant when interacting with other Christians and the world at large. This is a real gem of a book with very insightful moral dilemmas of a Christian which help develop character.
