Ten in the bed by Jane Cabrera is a story about a boy who is trying to sleep with ten cuddly animals in his bed, he is tired and wants more room so he can sleep. As he rolls over each animal falls out until eventually he is left alone in the bed. Cold and lonely he gets them all to get back into the bed before he goes to sleep satisfied. The fantastic illustrations and playful text makes this an excellent read aloud book. This was the story of the week in my Year 2 class last week and the children thoroughly enjoyed it. The repetitiveness of the phrases gave children the opportunity to participate in the story. After the story they learned how to spell some key words such as the, fell, out, of and bed. By the end of the week all the children were able to tell the story back to the teacher and very much enjoyed being able to do this. Some children progressed further by being able to use various adjectives to describe each animal. I felt it was a great book to use with a KS1 class as they could all relate to it and various fun filled lessons in both maths and english could be generated from the story.

This vibrant witty book comprises of counting from one to ten but with a twist on a well know nursery rhyme.

There are 10 cuddly animals in the bed, the Little one is tired and wants more room so he can sleep.
There are ten in the bed and the Little one said, ‘Move over, Move over.’ It is not just anyone in particular that falls out of the bed – first it is the Snorer, then the Cook, the Trumpeter, the Doctor, the Ballerina, the Pirate, the Princess, the Pilot, and last but by no means least the Astronaut.

The fantastic illustrations and playful text makes this an excellent read aloud book. The text is prominent and visually pleasing, this will appeal to children. The repetitiveness of the phrases will give children the opportunity to participate in the story.

Not only can this book be used to revise number 1-10 it also introduces a range of new words which children may not have been exposed to before. The pictures make it easy for children to decipher what the words may be without actually knowing them.

I would recommend this book for Key Stage 1 classes.

Cabrera is a great author for the younger crowd. My twin 3 yr old's loved it. Colorful fun pictures that helps get the child engaged and keeps them engaged. The illustrations were paintings that had a unique brushstroke and the colors were so vibrant! Cabrera has a style all her own. Loved the paintings especially! Also, many of her books have themes that are popular children’s songs, so immediately her books grabbed my preschoolers attention. A great addition to any children's library.

"Ten in the Bed" by Jane Cabrera is a charming and colorful retelling of the classic nursery rhyme. The story follows a group of ten adorable animals who are all snug in one big bed. As the rhyme goes, "There were ten in the bed, and the little one said, 'Roll over, roll over!'" One by one, the animals fall out of the bed until only the little one is left. The book is filled with vibrant and whimsical illustrations that capture the playful nature of the story which will grab the attention of the young students.
Each page depicts the animals as they tumble out of the bed, which will add to my students a fun and engaging visual element. The repetitive and rhythmic text makes it easy for students to follow along and join in the fun. "
Ten in the Bed" is a delightful read-aloud book that combines humor, counting, and the joy of a well-loved nursery rhyme.
I will recommend this book to any preschool or kindergarten teacher because it can be used academically to introduce some of the careers and jobs that we have in life. Besides, it can be used as a math lesson in a math class when we are talking about numbers and subtractions.

A cute take on the original, I like the fact that they they move differently every time. In fact, I pulled this for my storytime on movement. However, I ended up not using it (and knocked a star off my rating...) because GROANED is NOT a movement, and therefore didn't fit with the rest. Plus, acting out "groaning" isn't as fun as acting out actual motions...

Illustrations were cute, and the count down activities were creative, but it's not my favorite of the Cabrera song series. I found it hard to keep track of the different animals as they all changed "professions" to match the departing animal. And little mouse stayed put the whole time anyway while everyone else was all over the bed.

I know i should have liked this book. it's the song, with cute animals. it rhymes too i think, but they kept doing weird things. they were all ballerina's then there was a baker??? i was confused. not sure kids could keep up with it to sing it with them in storytime together.

"And the little one said 'move over, move over'. And then there were 9 in bed, and 8 and 7...and need I go? The illustrations are colorful and whimsical, and all the creatures in the bed are a delight. I dare you to read this book and not sing it.

Very cute but reinforced how much I personally dislike reading books that are actually songs--I am never consistent and end up switching back and forth between reading it straight and singing it. Also, this is not a song I'm really familiar with in the first place, so that was awkward.

This is a greta book for early education. It tells the story of counting and gradually there is less toys in the bed. There is a lot of engagement and repetition for students learning counting and can make it a great resource for learning.

There were ten in the bed until the little one said, "Move over, move over". They fall out one by one-the ballerina, the cook, the pirate. The kids can count down from 10 to 1. Very vibrant colors

The illustrations in this book are wonderful, and I loved that it added new movement words that coordinated between the person and the action. I didn't like that choppy rhyme to it.

I love ALL Cabrera's books. We built up to introducing this as the first book used in today's story time on "Being Late" by...

singing Hello everybody let’s clap our hands… (begin with clapping hands, slapping knees, touching toes, touching nose, --as many actions as needed to create energy and get everyone together—end today with “roll our arms”.

And then playing:
Roll, roll, roll your arms as s-l-o-w-l-y as you can
Roll, roll, roll, your arms as quickly as you can!
As you finish keep rolling your arms fast and explain that’s how time goes for moms, then roll slowly and explain that’s how time goes for children. This brings a laugh from the moms.

And finally:
explaining that being late often happens when you over-sleep. There are plenty of opportunities in this version to dramatize or act out the motions of the different ways of “rolling over”.

I love this children's book! It reminds me of another book I read which was another version of this one with little kids that I first read. They both give the same concept of someone in the story telling everyone else to roll over until gets to the last person, but they end a little differently.
This one ends with them all playing around and they end up going to bed while the other one ends with the other kids pulling the little one out of the bed and they all go outside to play. Both versions of this story are great and very entertaining to little children.

This would be a good book to use for children in Kindergarten. This is a fun book that can also be sung as a song to help your children become actively engaged in it! You can talk about counting up as well as backwards and you can also introduce addition and subtraction with this book. It would be fun to have your students create their own story similar to this one by using whatever number they choose and creating their own illustrations to accompany it!

This is another book that my little always picks out for himself, so I would guess that makes this a perfect book for a toddler/preschooler.

You probably remember the song from your childhood -- if not the tune is simple and easy to pick up -- but Jane Cabrera changes the words a bit. For example, the first one out of bed is the snorer -- Hooray! Those slight changes in the text make for some fun illustrations.
