Tranquility

Rate this book
Roane leaves the Fury werewolf pack to make room for his brother, Merrick, and his new mate. A natural alpha, there's nowhere Roane can go in wolf country and not stir up trouble. He settles in a town called Tranquility and immediately raises the hackles of the local pack leader.

Even worse, Roane gets one look at Scarlet, the pack leader's sister, and will do anything to possess her. Scarlet tries to resist him, but his touch inflames desire she can barely control. And that means heaps of trouble for both of them.

This short story is a free title, offered by New York Times bestselling author, Anya Bast.
Tranquility is part two of a two part series. Fury is the title of part one. These titles are highly erotic and meant for those 18 years or older.

Anya Bast is the author of numerous works of romantic fiction, mostly all paranormal and mostly all scorching hot. She lives in the country with her husband, daughter, eight cats, a dog, and an odd assortment of rescued animals.

She grew up in Minnesota and still favors the colder climates. After high school she moved to the southeast United States where she attended college. While in graduate school she sold her first book and decide to pursue her lifelong dream of writing instead of a career in psychology.

Somewhat reclusive by nature, she can be drawn out with a good bottle of red wine, classic movies, or good music. When she’s not writing, she can be found trying to grow organic vegetables, shopping in thrift stores for that perfect piece of clothing, or dreaming about travel to some faraway country.

She’s hard at work on a brand new series for Berkley Sensation right now, while winding up her national bestselling Elemental Witches quartet.

Luckily this was a freebie. However, if this is a "taster" to the author's work than I will be avoiding anything she writes. I'm not a huge fan of this sort of "literature" however, I thought - lets try it. What a waste of 10 mins (the length of the story)..
I've read paranormal romance before (Christine Feehan), but there was very little "paranormal" to this story and even less "romance"
description

The "plot" fades away, the characters are one dimensional, the romance non-existent, and if you're hoping for erotica - this wouldn't even get a nun hot and bothered.

==============
So it goes something like this:

Scene 1:
Hero: I want you.
Heroine: But you're my enemy
Hero: ok.

Scene 2:
Heroine's brother (baddie): Keep an eye on Hero. He's bad.
Heroine: Bad idea.
Heroine's brother (baddie): Please - you're my sister. I can trust you.
Heroine: ok (resigned).

Scene 3:
Hero: I want you.
Heroine: ok.

***boring $ex ensues**

Scene 4:
Heroine's brother (baddie): no!!!! That's my sister.
Heroine: leave Hero alone.
Hero: I won't kill you because of Her. But go away.
Heroine's brother (baddie): ok.

Scene 5:
Hero and Heroine's brother (baddie) fight and Hero wins.

The End
==================

This isn't a spoiler as there is nothing to spoil. It's pretty much predictable and dull.
description
The heroine is a feeble minded, silly female with no integrity and lacks a back bone. The author relies for too much on plot cliches (tall, dark handsome hero, so-called forbidden love (that lasts for about 2 minutes), blond baddie, fight for who's d*ck is bigger, Hero wins but it far too magnanimous to kill Baddie. The End)
DUMB. DUMB. DUMB. SO DUMB IT HURTS.

JUST SHUT UP. YOU'RE STUPID.
description
NO MORE PLEASE! YOU DUMB B****

***SNORE**** BORING *****

I did skip many pages and finished it in less than 10 minutes but if you do read it in full it will take about 10 minutes to read.

I hadn't previously read anything by Anya Bast before I read FURY, so I have no idea if TRANQUILITY is part of an ongoing series or something the author is writing separately to release as just the two interrelated short stories.

That being said, I liked the concept of the shifters, of being a Shadow, of the OtherKin in general. I enjoyed Roane, who is the brother of Merrick, the hero from FURY. When Roane realized that Merrick and Nikki (the werecougar who the elders of Fury had chosen as Queen) already had chemistry, he stepped aside and left town so as not to have to fight his fellow Alpha brother for the rule.

Now, Roane has moved to Tranquility, wanting nothing but to have a home with a pack and be left alone. He doesn't want to be the Alpha of the Tranquility pack, but the fact that he's recognized Scarlet as his mate is causing problems. Namely, that Scarlet is the sister of Marcus. And Marcus is the current alpha leader who hates Roane's guts. But, as always seems to happen, hot sex ensues, followed by the inevitable HEA filled with more hot sex.

Just as I said with FURY, I did enjoy the concept of the story, and I probably would have moved that to REALLY liked if not for two things. One, although I recognize the "I-just-met-you-but-want-to-sex-you-up-now" plot device, especially in stories involving shapeshifters who seem to "recognize" their mates upon meeting, just a tad more introduction before the horizontal tango would have been nice. And secondly, Holy Smokes, Batman!, this story badly needed an editor before it went up! I know Ms. Bast has published a bunch of stories through large-name publishers, but due to the lack of editing, I'm guessing this wasn't one of them.

So overall, a great concept, just as FURY was, and I'd definitely be interested in reading a full-length novel or novella starring the OtherKin. Yet on the other hand, the horrible execution of this short tale kept me from loving it like I wanted to.

This one was better than the first one, sort of. They are sexy short stories and as such, suffer from instant attraction and screwing. I actually thought this one was pretty well done, and I even liked the plot, such as it was. There were a few editing issues that were overlooked, but it happens.

It was quick and free.

This book and the one before it do not give me much faith in Anya Bast. As a short story, it truly isn't one. They meet, have sex, and poof, it's love! Even the paranormal destined mates angle can't save this one. Hopefully, her full length novels come with a little more knowing of the characters...

Only 28 pages and somehow the author makes it work. You get a beginning, a middle and an end that come together nicely in this short, passionate story.

Not as good and the first one. This one has a female protagonist that was a bit too weak for my taste.

Like the first one, this one just jumped right into the middle of a storyline thought. This one worked better for a short story read than the first one in my opinion and maybe that's because I knew what to expect, but also because the story line itself made more sense to me and had closure when it came to its end.

I at least recognized the hero as a secondary character from the first story, but the setting was new because he left town after his brother's mating because he didn't want to fight him for the alpha spot. In the new shifter town, Roane runs up against a community that does things a bit differently and the alpha is hostile and scared of him. Roane is attracted to the alpha's sister and she to him though she acts hostile at first and then has to deal with loyalty to brother v. loyalty to man she loves. It all comes to a head quickly and has an exciting ending.

Those who enjoy shifter romances in shorter story formats should give this one a try. I recommend reading the series in order.

Another lying cover, saying it’s a free read but it’s really not however, it’s only $0.99.

Again, there could have been a lot of story here, there was a lot of potential that could have made this book so much better.

Because it was such a short story it just moved much too fast. Personally I feel like she could have left out the two of them saying I love you to each other and it would have had more of an impact. Or maybe if the story had been more specific in how long he had been there.

In these types of books, I’m alright with the couple saying those three words almost right after getting together but, that’s when they’ve known each other for a good bit. That’s just me though.

A few typos and I stand by the statement I made in Fury, it applies here as well.

It was written a little more simple than Fury but I guess that’s to be expected with such a short story.

It was okay, these two books could probably be used as a quick kill time method, a filler for waiting somewhere, or even if you want a quick read to fall asleep to.

Thank you for reading my review.

Another free short story from Anya Bast, Tranquility picks up the story right after the end of Fury. Roane has left his home & his pack so his brother can be alpha & now he just wants to find somewhere to call home. He has no intention of challenging Marcus for the alpha position but Marcus is scared of Roane's alpha nature & wants him away from his territory. Marcus asks his sister to keep an eye on Roane but it all backfires when they can't keep their eyes (or hands) off each other!

A nice quick read but I would recommend reading the two stories in order. Both are available for as free kindle downloads (from Amazon UK anyway, although I assume its the same on Amazon US)

Merrick in Fury and Roane in Tranquility live up to my standards of what makes alpha-wolves the sexiest other around. Strong. Confident. And all about pleasing their women.

Roane left his pack and hometown Fury to step down as alpha male, he and his brother both shared this position, and whomever mater with Nikki, the cat shifter the council choose as the queen would have to kill the contender. Roane knew Nikki and his brother Merrick had the right chemistry to be the packs' leaders.
Roane was happy to leave Fury, so he was not forced to fight his brother to the death. All he wants is to live peacefully with a pack but when he arrives in Tranquility all hell breaks loose. The Alpha, Marcus, can't believe this alpha does not wish to become the leader and defeat him. On top of that, he has the hots for Marcus's sister Scarlet. So the fun begins

Too Fast Moving

I like novels, not novel as, or short stories. They move way time fast and are very shallow.

The characters meet, have a little tension, then almost immediately A LOT of sex, now they are passionately in love and resolving a situation of sorts, which makes them decide they are in love and most likely will be together forever. They should at keast know each other for a week prior to making the final decision. Round out the story, this is almost an outline of a story. I just want more of everything!

Still a better story then The Glitter Vampires- But not by much. The book seemed rushed and lack luster. It seems that the author was in a hurry to put out another book. Not sure. But I wont be reading anymore from this Author- even if it free.

I will start this review off by me saying, WOW!!! This short story was crap! This series was a joke. I mean I only read the 2nd but still. The 1st is at least over 100 pages, this one was less than half that. Now I've read books by Anya Bast before and enjoyed them, so this one was a sad surprise.

***A rule when writing a short story. MAKE SURE IT'S EDITED!!! Seriously. When its short, the errors are going to be standing out a lot more, at least to me they do. And there were SO MANY ERRORS! Involving grammatical, punctuation and present and past tenses. Very sad. A few examples:

"You 'looked' like you have something you want to say to me."

"From the moment the wolf had entered their territory, 'he'd' started ruffling feathers."

A story like this makes me think that maybe the author got a little cocky with how good of a writer she was. She's write this piece of crap, doesn't bother rereading her work, doesn't have anyone edit it (or god forbid it was edited and this was the stuff the editor missed!) and then has it published.

Questions phrases/sentences:

"She heard her breath thicken." (Um, wouldn't it sound better and make more sense using 'quicken?')

"She felt the sweet rush of her come as she came..." (That line, well it just makes me think that someone is just starting out with their first sex scene. And didn't do a good job writing it.)

"Roane was falling for his (Marcus) sister. 'He was falling her...'" AND "They were going watch their alpha..."
(Missing some words there.)
----------

This is the 2nd/final in this weird series. So why instead of giving the reader some back story, a plot, anything really, the author chose to inform us the ways of the Wolven/Werewolves in general. Which made no sense to me. I mean she could have given us a little more back story in regards to Roan and what happened in the first book. I mean I was confused. I've read books in the middle of series' before without many issues, but not this one. Exs: how they have the great nose: to smell others on a person, arousal, how killing an alpha will make you the new guy in charge. I mean wouldn't this have all been explained in the first book? And who, in this day and age, hasn't read a werewolf related book already? I mean seriously!

Questions/Comments:

How was Nikki made queen? After finding out that she was a werecat, being queen of werewolves or Wolven, just didn't sound right. And whoever she mates with would be leader, yet isn't she mated to Merrick? And the whole 'Wolven' term, not a fan. Makes me think of sewing...wolven, woven.

After arriving at the hurt guys house, so Roane can fix his car, things start to heat up. Stalking scarlet, blocking her with his body and the car, smelling her neck and kissing it....well none of that would be considered 'suggestive', not until he lays his hand on the small of her back. What??

Referring to the wolf side of a person as a Shadow, was strange to me too. I've never heard that and wasn't a fan. I mean just keep it normal and simple. There's the wolf and the person/human side. Where did 'Shadow' come from?

When Roane awakes to find himself in jail, there's a 'submissive pup' keeping watch. "He could dominate this one with his gaze alone...Marcus leaves a submissive pup to guard him because Marcus figured he was secure in his cell and couldn't break free. Unfortunately he was right." (That makes no sense to me at all. If the guy was submissive and Roane could use his dominance against then why didn't/couldn't he?)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tranquility expands the world and turns the focus to Roane, Merrick’s alpha brother, and Scarlet, a guarded she-wolf caught in a power struggle. Their dynamic feels more layered, with Scarlet’s inner conflict giving the story more heart than its predecessor. The romance is still hot and heavy, but there's a bit more emotional depth and tension at play. A solid conclusion to the duet, with a satisfying blend of dominance, desire, and just enough danger.

In this book we have the brother Roane from last book that stepped aside for Merrick to be with Nikki. So in this book he has come to Tranquility and rented an apartment.

But with him having that dominance about him the local Alpha “Marcus” is leery of Roane. He just can’t believe that he is not there to challenge him and he sends a spy to watch Roane – it just happens to be his sister. Yea… right :)

So Scarlett begins work at an auto repair shop where Roane works and the spy becomes a drooler. She falls-in-lust for him, and he for her.

They both go out on a repair job when they begin discussing this lust between them. So they go to a club to further discuss this heat between them. I thought they were gonna do it right there in the bar but they finally broke loose and went to a motel.

They arrive and are bumping and grinding – finally they were done before Scarlett’s brother the local Alpha shows up and fights Roane.

This time Roane let him go but really Marcus had his jowls on Roanes neck first so he really should have lost. But this was the first fight. of course [rolls eyes]

quickly…

Marcus has the pack come and take Roane to jail. He takes Scarlett with him and they talk which ends with him yelling at her then finally hitting her.

Roane escapes from jail to run to save Scarlett from her brother. There they fight again, except this time Roane pushes him to submit and not kill him because Scarlett would be broken hearted. He tells Marcus to leave and never come back.

So all they way through this story – Roane says he doesn’t want to be Alpha but in the end. He is Alpha!

The erotic part was the same as the first book. So I don’t recommend reading them back to back. Maybe if I had read other books and come back then the first book wouldn’t have been so fresh. But as it was.. this book was so similar it wasn’t fun to read.

Great book - This one was easier to read because I was more Familiar with the Outer Kin - at least the wolves -

In this story, we watch Roane (Which was Merrick's brother from Fury) as he picks up his life. Once he left Fury in order to let Merrick and Nikki be the Alpha's, Roane wanted to start over in a new town. but being who he is, a born Alpha, it was hard to blend in with another pack.

When he reached Tranquillity Minnesota, another town strictly wolf shifters, The town's Alpha Marcus was unhappy. He knew it would happen, but the only other option was to live among humans and be forever cut off from his kind, or he could go deep in the woods and live utterly alone. Neither were attractive options.

Truth was, he didn't want to be alpha, he wasn't interested in challenging Marcus, he just wanted to be in the town with other wolves, and be left alone...

That is until he saw Scarlet walking towards him... Scarlet is Marcus's sister. Marcus is worried that Roane will challenge him, he sends Scarlet to the Auto Shop that Roane just got a job at, and has her spy on Roane posing as a secretary.

Roane isn't blind, he knows he's being watched - the only problem was, he didn't mind at all if Scarlet wanted to watch him, touch him, or rock his world.

And Scarlet, although it would piss off her brother big time, couldn't seem to stop herself when Roane called her on her feelings towards him...

When her brother finds out -- look out Roane ... or Look out Marcus??

Great story :) Loved the fighting between Roane and Marcus. They were constantly at each other's throats (literary :)

Good sequel to Fury. In the sequel, Merrick's brother Roane, has relinquished Nikki and the Alpha role in Fury to Merrick, and has moved onto another Shapeshifter community to try to find a place for himself quietly among others of his kind. But, it is quickly discovered that he is an alpha and no one can accept that he will not challenge the current Alpha, Marcus. Marcus asks his sister, who Scarlet, who is already drawn to Roane - as he is to her - to keep an eye on him by working in the same garage/ When they go on a boss-mandated, offsite visit outside of Tranquility, away from what they think are watching eyes, the sparks fly and all teh signs are there that they are mates. But this is not something Marcus can accept. Scarlet loves her brother but 2 Alphas can not share a community. Who will she choose? And will they make the decision for her. Lots of excitement and heat in a very short story. I think I liked Tranquility better than Fury. If you like shapeshifter stories then it is worth the read, however, don't say I didn't warn you when you wish there was more than what is included in this short story.

Loved Roane as much as his brother Merrick. Both great alpha male characters, Also, much like Nikki overcame insecurities to rise to the top in Fury, Scarlet was a worthy heroine, finding her own path to follow her heart in this story and become the next queen of Tranquility. Fun characters and steamy scenes. It was a perfect filler for me while I was figuring out what to read next. Will definitely read more from this author.

3.5 of 5 stars.

After reading the first book, I really wanted to know what would happen with Roane. I was pleased to find that I liked him more than his brother, Merrick, the hero of the first book.
The fact that the two stars are werewolves caught my attention right away since I'm a sucker for paranormal romance. Roane is a natural born alpha who has no desire to be leader of a pack. He just wants to live peacefully amongst his own kind in a were community and be left alone. However, the current alpha in Tranquility Minnesota is no where near pleased when Roane decides to move in. Scarlet, the alpha's sister, is assigned to keep an eye on Roane, which shouldn't be too difficult since the man is sexylicious. The pair struggle against their attraction for some time, he knows she is off limits since she is the alpha's sister, and she knows being with Roane would be betraying her brother. But their attraction soon becomes impossible to ignore. After one steamy encounter, their world is torn apart and they must fight to stay together.
I enjoyed this book more than the first, however, it did have some draw backs. This installment in the Other Kin duo was much shorter than the first and not as...hot (wink wink). After reading these two books I'm really interested in reading more from Anya Bast and if you are looking for a quick, fun, paranormal romance read, I suggest you pick up the Other Kin series.

I just love Anya Bast. She writes in such a way to both intrigue her readers with interesting characters, sound plots, great action and hot romance. This is a short but sweet novella featuring a great story line.

Roane has recently moved to the town of Tranquility because in order for him to stay with his old pack he would have to fight his brother to be the alpha and take away his brother mate. He wants neither so, he moves away. Although he does not want to be an Alpha, he also does not want to be a lone wolf.

The alpha of Tranquility, Marcus does not want Roane in his territory and although he has assured Marcus he does not want his job, Marcus is just not buying it. So, he sends in his sister,Scarlet to spy on Roane. The problem is no matter how antagonistic they act towards each other, Roane and Scarlet have an undeniable attraction. It is just a matter of time before they get together. What will be the result? Will Roane have to kill Marcus and if he does will Scarlet be able to forgive him? or Will Marcus defeat Roane and alienate his sister? This is why you have to read this short story (approx 28 pages). My only criticism is that the editing was poor.

#2 in the series, novella.

Roane (Merrick's brother) leaves town to let his brother take over as head male and finds another pack. The problem is that he is a natural alpha and the current alpha (Marcus) is extremely threatened by him even though Roane has repeatedly said he isn't interested in the position.

Scarlet is Marcus' sister and her and Roane have an instant attraction but they both resist because of Marcus.

Marcus then asks Scarlet to get a job at the auto shop where Roane works to spy on him. Scarlet reluctantly agrees but the first time they are sent out to do a repair together they are not being able to fight their attraction and end up at a hotel.

Unfortunately Marcus finds them, Marcus and Roane fight, Roane wins but lets Marcus leave.

Marcus then returns for Roane with reinforcements, locks Roane up and slaps Scarlet around and locks her up. Scarlet's best friend figures out what's going on, lets Roane out and sends him to rescue Scarlet. Marcus and Roane fight again but this time Roane makes him submit and takes over as alpha.

All right, to let you know, I only grabbed both 'Otherkin' books as they were free, and about were's, and weren't YA cuz I'm really tired of YA with it's carefully worded no one says 'damn' and other editing for the semi-innocent. Seriously, I think my first word may have been damn and well, a good cuss is a great stress reliever IMO. Have to admit there's a bit more smut than I anticipated, but as luck would have it, the books were a quickie read - yup, all pun intended there - and also had some good fight moments, some oohh love at first sniff moments and some 'oh no' ones. Quick and fun, delightfully dirty and reading both was great way to have spent an hour while waiting for laundry and the dreaded need to leave cozy warm house smelling of fresh laundry to take new puppy for a recheck at the vet. I'll be looking into more books from the author, and not just the free ones either. She tells a good tale (tail?) and I'm pleased to have stumbled upon her work!

We briefly met Roane in Fury and now it's his turn. This book takes place after Fury so it is when Roane has left the Fury pack to allow Merrick to claim Nikki and become Alpha King. He is on his own but admits that he doesn't want to become a 'lone' wolf. He likes having pack around him. He settles in Tranquility for unfortunately for Roane, he is such an Alpha male that the current Alpha of the Tranquility pack senses aggression even when there isn't any.

This story is short and hot and gives you a small insight into the world of the Nathy brothers and their Otherkin packs. I would love to read more about this but as far as I can see from Anya Bast's website, there are only these two Otherkin novels/novellas so far. I am hoping that she does some more because I still need to know who the spy was in Merrick and Nikki's story.
