If you think all vampires are brooding, angst and hair gel, this murder mystery, high school romantic comedy will make you think againNewly-turned vampire Kira has earned a reputation for breaking rules. So when a student is murdered at her high school, all fingers point to Kira.In order to prove her innocence she has to show them that there's another vampire in town. She's pretty sure it's one of three new guys who've moved in recently.Dating three cute boys may be fun, but which one is the murdering vampire And what if he's the boy she's falling for
I thought the 90s YA horror boom died out because they were considered quickie offerings without any real substance, and that modern YA books were more advanced and complex.
Even the flimsiest of R.L. Stine's 90s Fear Street offerings had more substance than this piece of plastic!
Kira is a vampire. She has had to leave her old life behind, and has moved to a new town with her surrogate vampire family. They've barely arrived there when one of Kira's classmates is discovered dead, his death clearly the work of a vampire. Her surrogate parents, centuries old vampires, think Kira is responsible, and give her a week to prove her innocence and expose who the real vampire is.
First of all, it makes little sense for Kira's family to think she killed this guy (whose name is Tex.) They're basing this off the fact she turned Zack, her surrogate vampire brother, into a vampire in the first place. But she didn't kill him. He died accidentally and she turned him because she had feelings for him. That doesn't make her a killer! Big difference!
Kira's "investigation" turns up three suspects. There's new boy, Daniel, who's hot. There's Milo from the swim team, who's hot. There's moody Rowan, who's weird. And the story never once progresses from there. It's all, "Daniel is hot, Milo is hot, Rowan is weird," rinse and repeat. There's zero investment in the plot or characters, because none of them are developed. Kira is boy crazy. Daniel is hot. Milo is hot. Rowan is weird. That's ALL that we learn about them.
Kira eventually solves the mystery because the vampire she's searching for was utilising a power that up until that point HAD NEVER BEEN MENTIONED AS A POWER THAT VAMPIRES COULD HAVE, MUCH LESS THE VAMPIRE WHO SUDDENLY TURNED OUT TO HAVE IT.
I mean, how fucking lazy is that?
If you want a book that basically consists of a personality-free girl going on about how hot she thinks a couple of guys are, you might find something to take a bite out of here. Otherwise, I recommend spitting it out, gargling some mouthwash and picking something else, even one of the dire vampire themed YA books from the 90s. Any one of them, even the thinnest, is better than this.
I love this book and its no secret why. Cute guys! Tamara Summers has portrayed this vampire book in a hilarious manner with some very unvampirish commentary by a 16 year old set to investigate 3 very cute guys. i wanted to read this book from a long times because the title is catchy and after reading the summary i knew i had to read this book. As soon as i started reading it i was hooked. This book is not vampiry at all. In fact if you omit the blood drinking, the can't be see in mirrors and some other vampire life necessity then Kira is a perfectly normal 16 year old.
What makes this book mmore so intresting that midst the cute guys and surprise kisses theres a mystery. And you're trying so hard to hang on to every word to guess the killer for yoursellf. And alosng that there are muddled up feeling of who you don't want to be the kiler. Because of course with 3 cute guys as suspects the job goes to a slightly different but higher level. The whole book is like a fun joy ride. You know in the starting itself that you're going to have a good time with loud laughs and people looking at you like you've gone crazy. Kiras life and charecter are comical. Its a refreshing take on a vampire life style. And she suddenly comments on how good one of the three guys abs look you have to admit this book has wormed its way in your heart. Thsi book is light, funny and absolutly fun in the most different ways. Hats off to tamamara Summers.
Now let me shed some light on the story. Theres a girl. Who happens to be a vampire. A very disgruntled one. And theres a murder. You'll come to know why everybody thiks she did it. So to convince everybody she has to find out who did it. That much you already know. Now her suspects are all very cute. And Kira thinks the way into a guys mind is through his heart. But shes trying to be careful. Cause one of them might just be the killer.
Now as you all know i am a sucker for cute guys. And i know you are too. And so its obvious you'll have your favorites. My favorite was Milo and despite the turn of events i wanted Kira to end up with him and also i desperately wanted him not to be the killer. With his swimmer and surfer body and great abs and cute smile who could resist? And i fully agree with Kira that such a cute guy with that smile can not in any way be a killer. Oh how ways turn out!
This book makes me want to blurt out everything about it. But for your sake i'm going to try not to.
From the three suspects, Rowan would be the text book murderer. But we all know that it never is who is most likely to be. Most likely too Rowan will not be many's favorite. Its more of a sad and lets help this poor but cute guy out and discover whats his deal. I was completely sure he was not going to be the killer. Oh! how wrong i was and what he turned to be!
That leaves 1: Daniel. In my view all fingers were pointed to Daniel. Not that i didn't like him. I got suspicious pretty quick and his excuses were seriously lame. But then towards the end i kinda saw him in a new light. And he leaves a possibility of different things I want to know about. I am so fervently wishing for a sequel because i want to know so badly what happens and especially to Milo know that he's what he is(it is hard not to just blurt it out)
The killer is as usual some one completely out of the blue. I certainly didn't expect him because he's portrayed in a very non killerish way by Kira. There were-i thought-no subtle hints and there is absolutely no inclination as him as the killer. That might be the only part where the author was not up to mark because when your figuring out a mystery you figure the killer out gradually or at least you have an inkling. But i certainly didn't have a clue. Or maybe its just me.
Whatever be told this book was total fun and even ridiculously so. So if you're a fan of humor with a dash of supernatural and cute guys, you have to read this book. Anybody would enjoy this book. 101% guarantee.
Lots of love and smores by a campfire with your imaginary toy boy Beez.
I really liked this one for it's humor and constant flings. Where should I start? First of all, we have Kira. She's been turned into a vampire after a car accident and now lives with her "family." After one nasty mistake of turning a jock into one of her kind, Olympia and Wilhelm "the parents" have not forgotten and make a point to lecture her on it every so often. So, of course, when there's a dead body on the front steps of their new school, who do we call? (Sorry, I thought Ghost Busters would be funny in this vampy tale.) Anyway, to prove her innonence in this situation, at least, Kira sets off to find the real murderer. Instead, she gets three amazingly cute suspects.
I adored the writing style taken on because it creates Kira into an even more of a believable character than she would be if the author had just stated Kira's background and moved on from there. I due admit that some times were predictable in the book, in the sense that you thought you knew who the murderer. I mean, I had my suspicions, but I was not prepared for the ending. Surprising, to say the least. Satisfying, at most. I couldn't get over how realistic Kira seemed when she confronted some of her past in the most unexpected ways. She's flirtatious, outgoing, vulnerable but strong, and knows her limit. Characteristics I find endearing in this particular heroine. The other characters were equally viewed as important through Kira's search, and were very convincing in their personalities. It felt like for every action they had a reason/secret behind it.
Recommended for it's great technique and cool perception of the vampire basics. (And because of all the cute guys, of course.) ;)
This book is about Kira, a newly turned teenage vampire, trying to discover who had attacked and killed a fellow student at her school. This book was a quick and easy read. Very middle grade which is awesome. In my opinion this books pace was a bit off, The whole of the middle book was kinda slow, more about the boys she wanted to be with than playing detective and trying to find who the killer was. I also thought the ending was very rushed, within the last 19 pages she figured out who killed the student and took them down.
This last part of this book could have been written better but is perfect for the age range of 11+ which is what it says on the back of the book

This was a cutesy murder mystery, full of clichés and vampires.
Kira and her vampire family move to a new town, and on the first day of school for her and her 'brother' Zach, they see something shocking. Turns out there was a murder the night before. The victim, a jock named Tex. He was thrown from the third story window, and even more shockingly, there are two vampire-like bites on his neck. Their 'mother', Olympia blames Kira for the attack. (You'll see why.) She orders Kira to find out who the real vampire is that did it, and she's only got one week.
She's got three suspects. Three very cute suspects, according to Kira. Now here's where the story starts going downhill (for me, anyway.) She's attracted to all three of them. So she spends one-on-one time with them, in hopes that she'll get a confession out of the real killer (I found out by accident by reading a review that revealed all.) I was expecting something interesting to happen, but all Kira thought about was their abs, how cute they were, how funny they were etc. It got frustrating after a while, because she really wasn't taking this whole thing seriously.
And here's the real kicker, she decides that one of them can't be a murderer because he's a good kisser. WOW! Fantastic sleuthing skills there, Kira. He's a good kisser, so he simply can't be a murderer.
Oh, yeah. Did I mention she kisses ALL THREE of them? One day she'll be kissing one, the next day she'll be all over another one. Ugh.
Then something happened that just totally killed the book for me. She finds out one of the guys is a vampire hunter. So what does she do? The logical thing, of course. She smiles and continues to kiss him. Then pulls away and goes back out of the window, ending up in a cemetery, where she's going through a 'broken heart' because she can't be with the vampire hunter. One of the other guys finds her and they stay till morning, and kiss before parting ways (no fucking surprises there.)
Of course there were some parts I enjoyed, like her vampire mum, I thought she was nice. I knew who the real murderer was, but it was still disappointing to read:
I've had this book on my bookshelf for several years. A few weeks ago I pulled it out and decided to move it to my current TBR pile. And you know what? It was the perfect book to read right now. I've been feeling a bit restless-minded this month, so this short and lighthearted story was ideal. :)
Kira's family has recently moved to Massachussetts. She has a best friend, attends high school, and has a bit of a sun allergy. Oh yeah, did I mention that Kira's a vampire? And that her family aren't really her real family? But they're not too bad, since they supply blood, rides to school, and establish rules.
So when a kid is murdered at school and has two bites, they all assume Kira's responsible. Since she accidentally turned someone into a vamp, everyone blames her for everything.
That's when she decides to solve this murder mystery...
LOL. This was SO cute! I liked Kira's easygoing voice. I enjoyed the straightforward vampire worldbuilding. And most of all I liked the fun factor!
This turned out to be a fast, fun and flirty story that hooked me in. It was funny to see Kira caught between three very different but cute guys--Milo, Daniel & Rowan--who all somehow tie back to her in unexpected, but shocking and cool, ways.
I miss vampires, and this certainly satisfied my never-ending thirst for them.
Words are not enough for me to explain how much I love this book! For all those times that I am craving for something worth staying up late, you're just hanging out on my shelf?! Why didn't I notice you before?! Well, as they're saying, Better late than never..Right?
This book has a lot of mysteries hiding beneath it's pages. It got me wondering for a couple of times! I love those feeling that I still have to guess!
The only disappointment I have is for Milo, (Hello I'm team Milo here!) (yeah right) I'm really a fan of those 'against all odds couples' Imagine, Vampire-Vampire Hunter Love story? Very Exciting! But, Having Daniel in the end isn't bad at all. I just think that Kira and Milo has more chemistry. They're so fun together!
The characters are also well built, Tamara Summers did pay a lot of attention to give all of the details that the reader wants to know. The heroine is really hilarious, I often find myself laughing with her. Is it okay for me to hope for a part 2?
this book was like a vampire rom-com with a dash of murder mystery, and honestly, i had a great time. kira is a snarky, fashion-loving teenage vampire who gets framed for murder, and instead of brooding about it, she decides to clear her name while flirting with cute boys. priorities.
it’s a super fast read, and the humor really carries it. kira's inner monologue had me laughing, and the way she handles her undead drama is honestly kind of relatable. there are twists, but if you’ve read a lot of YA, you’ll probably see some of them coming. still, that didn’t make it any less fun.
if you’re looking for a dark, broody vampire romance, this isn’t it. if you want something light, cute, and filled with chaotic undead shenanigans, this one’s worth picking up. solid 4 stars.
Honestly, it’s the ridiculousness of this book that made it so enjoyable. It was just so much. I laughed so hard and the MC’s ability to fall in love so quickly kept me entertained.
The mystery was actually fun, but it was the path to solving that mystery that made this book so memorable.
Kira, once known as Phoebe Tanaka, is a teenage vampire who has a big problem. (Which young bloodsucker doesn't?). Sure she bit a guy she temporarily lusted for but it didn't mean she took another snack out of someone from her new school! But her vampire family doesn't believe her. She must clear up her name within a week or else she'll have to face the consequences!
With three cute suspects she is eyeing on, how can Kira keep focus on her little "detective" work? Especially when she might be crushing on one of them!
Well, I don't hate the vampire part of this novel but it is practically everything else the bothers me.
In first-person narration, Kira fell flat through her voice with her feelings only grazed upon. She was impossible to connect with because whenever she narrated, it would be like she was talking to you in real life, simply describing what was going on but without giving you that personal connection. If there is no connection with the protagonist, the reader will likely end up not caring what would happen to the character in the end.
Also, you don't learn much about her past life and how she dealt with her blood family after she became a vampire. She constantly stated that she is half Japanese but what is the other half? European? African American? There were a lot of blanks in terms of her history and I think it is important to at least let the reader know more about Kira as a whole.
I didn't understand why there would be anything going with Kira and her suspects. There was absolutely no chemistry between Kira or any of the guys because their time spent together wasn't even worth enough to develop anything! The romance was practically non-existent!
When the ending came around, it was not as exciting as it was supposed to be. From start to finish, I was like, "Uh huh. Uh huh. Okay, done." I couldn't find this novel to be appealing as I hoped.
I guess you could call this novel a mystery but I just don't see the mystery factor in it. I found the plot was an excuse to have Kira hang out with three different cuties because that was pretty much what was happening throughout. I don't hate the book; I guess I just don't like how everything was put together. The premise is not mind-blowing but a potentially good story could have been created upon it. There were just too many flaws, from characters to plot to almost anything you could think of. As a reader, you wouldn't mind reading the novel but you would definitely be nit-picking it as you go through.
Never Bite a Boy on the First Date is your lighter vamp novel and is easy to breeze through, but something I would never recommend purchasing.
As a teen, I devoured vampire novels. Anne Rice, Christopher Pike, L J Smith, Bram Stoker, you name it, I'd probably read it. I got older and did my degree and found legitimate vampire reading in the Gothic and the Literature of Terror course. The recent vampire 'craze' supposedly spawned by the Twilight franchise didn't come as a surprise ot me the way it did to many in the media, however it has been hard to get away from teen vampire fiction of late and the teen vampire's 'voice' has become more than a little clichéd. Summers attempts to walk that most subtle of lines between indulgence and farce in Never Bite a Boy on the First Date. I'd say that by the end of the novel it's a sucess, but it did start off a little shaky.
The plot is thankfully less melodramatic than the aforementioned, and Kira is a likable character. She makes the big mistake of converting her first post-transformation boyfriend into a vampire, and the banter between Kira and Zach which ensues from this is entertaining, and the fact that Kira can kick his butt anytime she likes is a nice change. There's plenty of the boys, fashion and school for a light-hearted novel. The detective element gives the story drive and depth. The revelations about Kira's untimely death come at nearly the end of the novel, and feel a bit rushed, however the ending does leave it open for a sequel. Overall, an enjoyable read.
disclaimer: this is not the first time i've read this. second disclaimer: THIS IS NOT A FIVE STAR BOOK.
i bought this book for 69p in the works in like 2011 and it immediately became my favourite thing to exist. how - as a prepubescent child who was starting to learn about fancying boys - could i possibly pass up a vampiric murder mystery where all three suspects are impossibly hot and practically spewing testosterone??
and the fact i've picked it up again age 21 says a lot about the current state of my love life.
this book has stupid teenagers, stupid vampires and stupidly hot boys. but you probably won't find it anywhere anymore because i'm sure it's been out of print for ages. still, if you do find it by some miracle, pick it up because it's absolutely hilarious.
I read a book from this author last year and fell in love with it, so I decided to give this book a chance. It sounds very interesting so I borrow from the library. I love the beginning but I would love for the story to end a different way. Overall I think this is a very good read.
Pra ser sincera eu fiquei surpresa que eu tenha gostado, porque tem vários pontos que normalmente iriam me incomodar mais, porém a vibe desse livro é tão gostosinha que foi mais tranquilo. Gostei.
What you get if you cross Twilight with Nancy Drew, but make it sassy. Short cute read that's slightly lame but enjoyable anyway. I'm probably not the target age group but who cares
To be fair, this book is very much for teenagers but I couldn't help but love it anyway. Kira acts and talk exactly how you would expect from a teenager but she was so funny with it. Unlike other vampire novels, she doesn't instantly become more wiser and grown up. She was turned aged 16 and she is stuck that way in both mind and body. She makes jokes and puns about being a vampire which was something I really liked. It was quite funny that she would make fun of herself or realise how bad the puns she was using really were. It was things like that that gave the story a more light-hearted feel throughout.
I loved how Kira explained that 'if you bite it you buy it' as explained by her vampire mother. Fairly reasonable I would say. If only Kira had actually listened properly though because she ends up stuck with Zach who is now the crazy ex boyfriend who wont leave her alone. Hopefully she has learnt her lesson.
The three boys, Daniel, Milo and Rowan were good and interesting characters that could have been a lot better with some more development but I understand that teenagers can sometimes have a short attention span so that could be the reason behind the length of the book. I would have really liked to have gotten to know each of the boys a bit better before the book ended but that wasn't to be. Love triangles are very common in these kinds of books now, especially after Twilight but this is the first where there was a love square and it made for an interesting change because the boys were so different from each other.
I don't really like the whole murder mystery aspect of these books because they can be too drawn out and take away from the parts of the story that I really like. This time though I really enjoyed this aspect of the story and I think a big part of that was down to how it was told. Even right up until the last minute although some of the characters are ruled out, I still couldn't figure out who was the killer. The twist was a good one and I was glad that it wasn't completely predictable.
As the book is quite short, there is a lot missing from the story. The characters lack real development and the ending is extremely rushed. It seemed as though something clicked in Kira's head about the investigation and just when she realised what was going on, everything was over. I would have liked for the ending to be drawn out a little more and to have been given more closure about what had happened.
Solid four stars for what it was. A fun read with the POV of a teenage girl who recently got turned into a vampire. I enjoyed the way she thought because it totally reminded me of how I used to think as a teenager, with all of the "likes" and "totallys" :)
Story about a vampire girl Kira who was dying and got found by a vampire family that turned her. She then got into some trouble with her vampy family by turning a teenage boy. In their new town a student turns up dead with bite marks on his neck, her family immediately assumes it was her and reluctantly gives her one week to figure out who the murderer is or else. And by or else they mean they will lock her in a coffin with a tube for feeding for who knows how many years!! What vampire would want that!!?? There are three suspects, one creepy but cute Rowan, one super hot and funny and outgoing Milo and one mysterious yet super sexy Daniel.
This was a fun and pretty quick read. However, if you don't like reading from the POV of a teenage girl then I would not recommend this to you. I didn't mind it, what kept me from giving it five stars was the fact that this is not a book I will read a million times even though I did like it. Also, the ending all happened a bit quick...though really there wasn't much more to write, but it still felt too fast.
Had trouble getting into the book at first. It is meant to be a fast read and a light read. I can't push it any further by asking for it to be a deep book. Recommend for the YOUNG YA readers.
Kira finds a body along with the whole school. Three suspects. All male... all cute... she's a girl's girl and she is forever 16. She acts and really sounds like a teen, unlike some books I've read.
She must clear her name by solving who did it. To her family who love her so much, they think she killed the boy. Now that's unconditional love. Rolling eyes and raising one eyebrow afterwards.
Okay, I finished the book. I originally gave it three stars bc I started to finally get into the book. The ending was bad. She settled. She really is in love with one guy but she decided this guy will be better for her and boy is he cute anyway. One word....settled! Next word...really?! Well that sucks. Pun intended. Hence, I changed it from three stars to two.
Next book.

I expected this novel to be good. My fellow reviewers gave this novel high ratings. I didn't expect this novel to be so good. It started off a little slow and I wondered, 'Why did I order this novel from the library?' It didn't help that I thought the cover page was cheesy though the title seemed clever to me. Fortunately, this novel impressed me. I thought that the main character was very relateable. I thought the author's interpretation of vampires was very interesting. I thought that the mystery was very clever. I even liked (two of) the main character's romantic interests. I would read this novel again! I'm bummed that it ended so quickly (it's on the short side). I would recommend this novel. I really, really, really wish that Tamara Summers would write a sequel. There are so many places that she could go with it. With this being said, I did find the ending to be satisfying.
Awesome mystery plot? Check. Fun read? Check Different from the typical norm vamps? Check. Intriguing male characters? Triple Check Laugh out loud humour? Check.
Some funny quotes that I enjoyed from the book.
“...stop throwing him out the window...They are expensive to replace and the noise might disturb neighbors.”
“Don't worry, I don't bite. Ha ha.”
“Sure, I had been accused of murder by my family and was wrapped up in a bizarre investigation, but there were such cute boys involved. Hey, I try to look on the bright side.”
Another Vampire book. :B This is about a girl named Kira was accused of biting / killing someone. Yes she has bitten someone before but it was an accident and it was to save his life. His? His also known as Zach's. They had a romantic past together but its all over.
There are a couple of suspects but suddenly Kira had feelings for them. She hopes the guy she likes wasn't the killer. But if she doesn't find the killer, she will be lock up for thousands of years. Literally.
Kira is a cool character but I don't like how she can just get any guy she wants. She is somewhat a 2 timer. She can't decide who she likes. I mean come on, pick someone already.
