Kitap ismiyle müsemma, Avrupa’da yemeğin tarihiyle ilgili fragman bilgiler içeriyor. Gastrotarih okuması için başlangıç seviyesinde bir kitap. Yeterli derinliğe sahip olmasa da kolayca ve keyifle okunduğunu da belirtmeliyim. Daha doyurucu okuma yapmak isteyenler için Massimo Montanari’nin Avrupa’da Yemeğin Tarihi ve Çileklerin İsyanı kitaplarını öneririm.

Un saggio che racconta la cultua culinaria. Si inizia raccontado la cucina popolare per scoprire, poi, che si tratta di storia, cultura, viaggi, geografia, costume e società. Oltre alla storia degli alimenti, ed alle abitudini di consumo, si analizza - non troppo nel profondo - anche l'evoluzione delle abitudini quotidiane, del lavoro e delle relazioni umane. Un saggio interessante, ottimo spunto per ulteriori approfondimenti.

Some have criticized this one as reading like a "term paper" rather than a work of nonfiction. For me, Rebora's approach worked fine as I was looking for a general overview; there was plenty of scholarly evidence presented for a solid presentation. Breadth of subjects was done well by short chapters to avoid getting bogged down. I suppose if I were disappointed it was the focus on Italy, though other European regions were covered. Definitely recommended.

Definitely got dull at some points, but I feel like the amount that I learned from the more interesting bits made up for it. I was amused at how the book is supposedly about the history of European culinary culture but about 80% of the book is about Italian food (no complaints there!).
