Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a former President of South Africa, the first to be elected in a fully representative democratic election, who held office from 1994–99.

Before his presidency, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist, and the leader of the African National Congress's armed wing Umkhonto we Sizwe. The South African courts convicted him on charges of sabotage, as well as other crimes committed while he led the movement against apartheid. In accordance with his conviction, Mandela served 27 years in prison, spending many of these years on Robben Island.

In South Africa he is often known as Madiba, an honorary title adopted by elders of Mandela's clan. The title has come to be synonymous with Nelson Mandela.

Following his release from prison on 11 February 1990, Mandela supported reconciliation and negotiation, and helped lead the transition towards multi-racial democracy in South Africa. Since the end of apartheid, many have frequently praised Mandela, including former opponents. Mandela has received more than one hundred awards over four decades, most notably the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

"Ninguém nasce odiando outra pessoa
pela cor de sua pele,
ou por sua origem, ou sua religião.
Para odiar, as pessoas precisam aprender,
e se elas aprendem a odiar,
podem ser ensinadas a amar,
pois o amor chega mais naturalmente
ao coração humano do que o seu oposto.
A bondade humana é uma chama que pode ser oculta,
jamais extinta".

The children's book Nelson Mandela is about the story and life of the South African leader Nelson Mandela. The story starts by showing his childhood and discussing his quest for education. Nelson, with the given name Rolihlahla, from Qunu was the only child chose for school where he excelled and became a lawyer to fight for the people who couldn't fight for themselves. When the Europeans started to take of South Africa was split into three parts, starting the apartheid. Nelson started protests and rallies against the apartheid, seeking power for the people. The state was not happy with Nelson and vowed to put him in jail. Nelson ran and hid, using disguise to maintain his freedom. He was eventually captured where he grew old until his release.

The pictures in this story are very prominent and bold, as if they could jump off the page. The story line follows a small corner in either the top of the page, or the bottom corner of the page. Kidir Nelson creates the image of the African Americans being the center focus, allowing the europeans to drop behind. When looking at the pages that is the first thing you can draw attention too. The sky’s are blue and bright and the sand on the beach looks so pure. The story line follows the pictures, when the text is sad the faces look hurt. When the story is happy, the African Americans are smiling. Its a sweet story that allows the pictures to also tell the story.
