My oh my, the differences.
I bought this book bc amazon suggested I buy it, and the premise seemed interesting enough. I began it when I did because I've just finished the behemoth that is "1Q84" and I needed something short for balance. I finished it because... Well, because it was too short not to.
This book was awful. Not good at all. By far the worst book I've read in a long time. Unlike most people, I can differentiate between a bad book and a book that's just not my thing. All-in-all, the book was my thing, it just sucked.
Why, you ask?
Well, it was a mixture of things, as one would expect.
1. It told.
Any aspiring novelist has heard "show don't tell" and an equal number have responded "what the fuck does that mean?" Well this book is a perfect example of telling! The entire story was simply reported to us. Zero active writing.
2. The writing was just... Wow.
Seriously, the fact this novel was published does so much to boost my confidence it's amazing! The writing was basic, choppy, repetitive, lacking rhythm, and repetitive.
3. HURRY!
When I received this book and saw it was only 141 pages at about 150 words/page, I was surprised. When I finished "1Q84" and saw I had a nice easy read to turn to next, I was relieved. After reading it, I'm annoyed. Nothing was dissected, nothing was explored, every aspect was just glazed over and moved on. How do you cover a lifetime and the deterioration of a loving relationship in 141 pages? Oh, bc it was told to us, instead of showed to us. It's a lot easier to just tell a reader something than it is to sink in and show the reader through character action.
After reading this it left me with a question: how responsible is a translator for the works they translate. After seeing a wonderful work like 1Q84 translated perfectly, and then reading this train wreck, I still don't know. A friend says give the author the benefit of the doubt, and since a big problem with this was the writing I will in fact blame the translator. However, the terribly brief, horrible story telling style is the author.

Fontos könyv. És szemét könyv. Kiszámítottan kegyetlen, és olyan egyszerű nyelven adja elő magát, hogy a hülyének is fájjon. Őszintén szólva bizonytalan vagyok, műfaját tekintve regényt tisztelhetek-e benne, vagy inkább pamfletet, vádiratot, esetleg protest songot – olyan egyértelműen felülírja a szépírói elemeket a téma súlya, hogy az már(-már) a művészi érték rovására megy. De alighanem ez tudatos, és ez esetben (kivételesen?) talán jól is van így. Egy isztambuli nevelőotthonban kezdődik minden, ahol Ali és Ramazan, a két árva srác megismerkedik, hogy aztán együtt tapasztalják meg a török párialét minden szörnyűségét, egyre gyorsuló spirálban közelítve a dolgok a legaljához. Magden fricskája, hogy homoszexuális kapcsolatukat úgy ábrázolja, mint a boldogság egyetlen forrását, a tisztaság és szépség kivételes megnyilvánulását az élet sokszínű borzalmai között. Csak ez segít ideig-óráig kitartani az állami korrupcióval, az oktatás életképtelenségével, a rendőri brutalitással szemben, egyszóval mindazzal szemben, amit Magden rikító színekkel ábrázol, és amiért – ne legyen az olvasónak kétsége – egy álszent, kapzsi, frusztrált, impotens és inkompetens kormányzat a felelős. Az írónő alaposan kiteregeti a török szennyest, de azt hiszem, ezért akár hálásak is lehetnek neki. Mert megtudjuk ugyan, miféle dolgok (is) történnek arrafelé, de azt is megtudjuk egyben, hogy akad, akinek ez fáj, aki beszélni akar róla, és akadnak, akik olvassák. És ha más nem is, ez mindenképpen bizakodásra ad okot.

Perihan Mağden’den öncesinde Biz Kimden Kaçıyorduk Anne ve İki Genç Kızın Romanı kitaplarını okudum. Ali ile Ramazan birçok yerde karşıma çıktığı için bu kitabını da okumak istedim. Zaten yazarın anlatımına aşinaydım o yüzden sertliği ve yalınlığı beni şaşırtmadı. Yazar bir gün gazetede karşısına çıkan bir haberden yola çıkarak bu kitabı oluşturmuş. Ötekileştirilenlerin ve hayata 3-0 geriden başlayanların hikayesini anlatmak istemiş. Yetimhanede büyüyen Ramazan’ın hayatı Ali’yle tanıştıktan sonra bambaşka bir hale bürünüyor. İstismarın üzerinde bolca duran bir kitap ki Ramazan’ın yaşadıkları gerçekten çok korkunç. Ali’nin hikayesi ise daha farklı, travmalarından kurtulamayan ve kendisine kötü lakaplar taksa da Ramazan’a tutunan biri. Ama eğitimden geri kalma, iş bulamama ve barınacak yeri bile zor bulma derken sistemin onun için oluşturduğu kafesten kurtulamıyor ikisi de. Acımasızca olayları sıralayarak anlatan bir roman ve açıkçası okurken içim daraldı. Karanlık bir hikaye olacağını zaten biliyordum ama resmen zifiri karanlıkta son buldu. Düşündürücüydü evet ama benim için şu anlık biraz fazla karanlık bir okuma oldu. Dışarıda aynı kaderi yaşayan daha kaç Ali ile Ramazan var bilemiyorum ama tahminim onların yalnız olmadığı yönünde.

3 puan vermemin tek sebebi; romanın kısalığı...
Duygu sömürüsünden uzak durularak, dobraca anlatılmış bu çok acılı hikaye gerçekten hissettirmek istediklerini başarıyla empoze ediyor okuyanlara.
Ha ama tam tersi fazlaca duygu sömürüsü yapıldığını iddia edenleri de gördüm; romanın kısa kısa cümleleri hatta tek kelimelik cümleler özellikle bu eleştirilere sebep olmuş. Bana kalırsa Ramazan'a öylesine uygun düşüyor ki bu cümleler...
Kısa sürede okumuştum ve okuduğum günün tamamını düşünceli ve karamsar geçirdim. Perihan Mağden'in sadece bu romanını okudum ve hala neden sadece bu romanını okumuş olduğumu anlayamıyorum.

So. In einem Rutsch durchgelesen, muss ich das jetzt erstmal verdauen.
(Das ist "Ein Wenig Leben" in Kurzform, sozusagen. 😭)
"Ali und Ramazan"!
Man muss diese beiden in einem Atemzug nennen, genauso wie "Romeo und Julia" oder "Tristan und Isolde". Sie gehören in die Linie der tragischen und unsterblichen Liebesgeschichten.
Dieses Buch an sich ist bereits eine Allegorie des Lebens von Ali und Ramazan.
Beides kurz und intensiv.
So wie man schon von der ersten Seite an weiß, das diese Geschichte einem das Herz brechen wird, so steht auch für Ali und Ramazan vom Moment ihrer ersten Begegnung an fest, dass es mit ihnen nicht gut aus gehen wird.
Und trotzdem liest man weiter!
Trotzdem kann der eine nicht ohne den anderen!
Trotz aller Schwierigkeiten und Schmerzen bleibt die Anziehungskraft und Liebe zwischen Ali und Ramazan beständig, genau wie die Sogkraft dieses Buches beständig bleibt.
Das liegt aber auch an den klaren Sätzen und kräftigen Bildern, die die Autorin verwendet. Es ist keine Sekunde lang kitschig oder romantisch, doch immer wieder tauchen in dieser harten Realität kleine Momente der Schönheit auf.
"Ali und Ramazan" ist wirklich ein ganz besonderes Buch.
Eine echte Liebesgeschichte, ganz ohne Blümchen und süße Geigenmusik.
Unbedingt lesenswert!

Depresyona gireceğim resmen. Hava soğuk kapalı, kitap soğuk depresif :S. Sürekli dramdan hazzetmeyen bünyeme iyi gelmedi :). Aslında beş yıldızlık bir kitap değil beşte dörtlük ya da üçlük falan ama Perihan Mağden'in bu cesur tavrını sevdiğim için bu puanı verdim. Zira hem konusu olan eşcinsellikten ötürü hem de okuduğum en argo dilli kitap olmasından dolayı Türkiye'de cesur sayılacak bir kitaptı. Ne yazsam bilemedim... Önyargılı insanların yargılarını yıkıp okumalarını sağlayacak bir değerlendirme yazmak isterdim ama malum Einstein bile demiş: "Önyargıları parçalamak atomu parçalamaktan daha zordur." diye benim acemi cümlelerim mi yıkacak :)? Ki öyle homofobiyi yıkacak cinste olayı işleyen bir kitap da değil ama...

bir gazete haberinden kaynak alınarak yazılmış olmasının dışında edebi hiç bir değer taşımadığına inandığım kitap.yazarın son derece arabesk bir dil kullanması ve hem her şeyi tüm çıplaklığıyla anlatayım hem de kısa keseyim bir an önce bitsin dediği hissine kapıldım.sanki ha bire bir yerlerinden makaslanmış ve bunu yaparken de okuyucunun gözüne sokulmuş.

Roman, Ali ve Ramazan isimli iki aşığı anlatıyor. Ali'nin annesi o daha küçük bir çocukken, babasını baltayla öldürüp, ardından kendini öldürmüş. Anne ve baba tarafında bir takım akrabaları var, ama iki taraf da Ali'yi suçluyor bu olaydan dolayı (hani "neden öyle put gibi durdu, kurtarsaydı anasını/babasını" gibisinden), istemiyor. Ali de devletin yetimhanesine gönderiliyor. Ramazan'sa daha bebekken cami avlusuna bırakılmış. Çok karizmatik, daha bebekken bile. Gizli gizli annesinin bir Hülya Koçyiğit türevi olduğu, zengin babasının varlığından haberinin olmadığı, öğrenir öğrenmez gelip onu kurtaracağı, asıl adının 'Orçun' olduğunu söyleyeceği bir dünyanın hayallerini kuruyor.
Bilmediğimiz bir hikaye değil aslında Mağden'in anlattığı; çirkin hakikate dair her şeyin yok sayıldığı acımasız dünyada bildiğimiz ama bilmezlikten geldiğimiz bir hikaye. Steril hayatlarımıza sokmamak için elimizden geleni yaptığımız, arabayla yanlarından geçerken gözlerimizi kaçırdığımız piçlerin öyküsü Ali ile Ramazan. Çok acı hayatlar süren iki çocuk ve onların her şeye rağmen büyüyen, sürekli büyüyen aşkı.
Perihan Mağden'e bu kitap için gerekli esin, 17-18 yıl önce gazetelerin üçüncü sayfalarında yayınlanan bir seri haberle gelmiş. 1992'de görmüş, etkilenmiş, farkına varmadığı kadar çok etkilenmiş çünkü yıllar sonra bir şekilde çıkmışlar yüzeye. Hikaye gerçek olaylara ve gerçek insanlara dayanıyor, ama elbette Mağden'in yarattığı, eklediği (büyük ihtimal zaten şu ya da bu şekilde var olan ama bizim asla bilemeyeceğimiz) bazı karakterler var; Ali'yle Ramazan'ın bizim en baştan bildiğimiz sonlarına gitmeleri için olmaları gereken karakterler onlar.
Daha ilk sayfadan bize Ali ve Ramazan'ın hayatlarının nasıl biteceğini gerçek gazete haberlerini alıntılayarak anlatıyor Mağden. Boşuna kendinizi kandırmayan, boş hayallere gerek yok, ölecek Ali'yle Ramazan, iğrenç bir şekilde ölecekler hem de, demiş oluyor. Biri, bir cinayet işledikten sonra balkonun demirlerine bir kablo bağlayıp aşağı inmeye çalışırken kopan kabloyla altıncı kattan düşerek, diğeri de ilkinin ölümünden sonra kendini asarak ölüyor gazetelerdeki haberlere göre.
Bu üçüncü sayfa haberlerinde hep bir ima var, sürekli "çarpık" sözcüğü kullanılmış. Oysa Ali ile Ramazan'ın ilişkisinden başka ne varsa o çarpık bu romanda; karşılaştıkları kişiler, onları taciz edenler, kaldıkları korkunç yetimhane, birini orospuluk yapmaya, diğerini tinerci olmaya iten koşullar... bunlar "çarpık", aralarındaki aşk değil. Aralarındaki ilişki, yaşadıkları kapkara dünyayla karşılaştırıldığında öylesine parlıyor ki.. Kendi kendini yıkan, tarafları yok olmadan bitmeyen bir aşk belki, ama Ali'nin Ramazan'ı bıçaklaması ya da Ramazan'ın cinayet işlemesi onlardan bağımsız, onları biçimlendiren şartların sonucu.
Perihan Mağden'in kullandığı dil hakkında genel olarak ne düşünülüyor bilmiyorum, ama özellikle bu romanda çok hoşuma gitti benim. Okuduğum diğer kitaplarında eğreti durduğunu düşündüğüm anlar olmuştu, ama burada anlattığı dünya ve Ali ve Ramazan'ın yoğun acısı, özleri gereği başka bir dile uygun değil bir kere. Daha kibar, daha edebi, daha düzgün, daha ağdalı bir dil sırıtırdı, tuhaf dururdu bence.
Ali ile Ramazan salt iki eşcinseli anlatan bir roman değil. Böyle gösteriyor medya, aynısını İki Genç Kızın Romanı için de yapmışlardı, nasıl ki o romanın odak noktası "lezbiyen ilişki" değildiyse özünde, Ali ile Ramazan'ınki de "iki gay erkek ve onların aşkı" değil aslında. İstanbul'un acımasız yüzünü gösterdiği korkunç derecede yoksul olanı, kimsesiz, dışlanmış olanı, insanlık ayıbı yetimhanelerde büyüyeni, evsizi, tinerciyi, erkek fahişe/tokmakçıyı, sadece erkeklerle olanı ama kendine eşcinsel demeyeni ya da erkeklerle olanı ama bunu benim cinsel yönelimim bu diye bilinçli bir şekilde düşünmeden yapanı, çünkü kadınlarla yatmayı zaten bilmeyeni, cinselliğe sadece aşkın dışavurumu, bedenlerin keyifle gerçekleştirdiği bir eylem olarak değil, kinin, öfkenin bir göstergesi olarak bakanı, seksi (daha doğrusu "sikmeyi") bir öfkesini boşaltma, patlama, intikam alma olarak göreni, cinayet işlemeye, yani bir insanın ulaşabileceği en uç noktaya gideni/itileni, bolca tacize, tecavüze uğrayanı, son derece sıradan görünüp içinde dehşet verici kötülükleri gizleyeni anlatıyor bu roman. İki erkeğin aşkından çok daha fazlası Ali ile Ramazan.

Bu üçüncü sayfa haberlerinde hep bir ima var, sürekli "çarpık" sözcüğü kullanılmış. Oysa Ali ile Ramazan'ın ilişkisinden başka ne varsa o çarpık bu romanda; karşılaştıkları kişiler, onları taciz edenler, kaldıkları korkunç yetimhane, birini orospuluk yapmaya, diğerini tinerci olmaya iten koşullar... bunlar "çarpık", aralarındaki aşk değil. Aralarındaki ilişki, yaşadıkları kapkara dünyayla karşılaştırıldığında öylesine parlıyor ki.. Kendi kendini yıkan, tarafları yok olmadan bitmeyen bir aşk belki, ama Ali'nin Ramazan'ı bıçaklaması ya da Ramazan'ın cinayet işlemesi onlardan bağımsız, onları biçimlendiren şartların sonucu.
Perihan Mağden'in kullandığı dil hakkında genel olarak ne düşünülüyor bilmiyorum, ama özellikle bu romanda çok hoşuma gitti benim. Okuduğum diğer kitaplarında eğreti durduğunu düşündüğüm anlar olmuştu, ama burada anlattığı dünya ve Ali ve Ramazan'ın yoğun acısı, özleri gereği başka bir dile uygun değil bir kere. Çok ağır bir konu, çok ağır temaları var birçok potansiyele gebe bir hikaye ama çok kötü bir anlatım. Proje ödevini pazar akşamı yapan ortaokul çocuğu kıvamında yazılmış bir roman. Hiçbir şey vaat etmiyor hiçbir vermiyor var olan acı da üzüntü de Ali ile Ramazan'a ait ne yazık ki yazar Ali ile Ramazan'ın hakkını veremiyor.

Çok mutluyum bizim topraklardan böyle şeyler çıktığı için ama ben kitabı sevemedim. Çünkü öncelikle dili bir garip, cümleler kısa ve devrik. Sonrasında çok fazla duygu mastürbasyonu var ve bu ikilinin aşklarından çok dramına tanıklık ediyoruz ve bu da çok fazla boğdu beni. Bir de fazlaca fetişize edildiğini düşünüyorum. Bilemiyorum. Seveceğimi düşünüyordum, okuttu kendini ama sevemedim.

By her own account, she was an unruly student--and her mother was proud of it. One of the most famous writers in young Turkish literature, Perihan Mağden has spent some time at Yaddo, the famous artists' community. Mağden is a single mother who lives in Istanbul. She is currently a columnist for the newspaper Taraf. She was tried and acquitted for calling for opening the possibility of conscientious objection to mandatory military service in Turkey. Her prosecution was criticized by human rights groups around the world. The European Union closely monitored the lawsuit. In a show of support for Mağden, newspapers in Turkey have republished the column that led to criminal charges against her. In addition to writing editorial columns for Turkish newspapers, Mağden has also published fictional novels and a collection of poetry. Mağden's novel 'Two Girls', published in 2005, was praised for pushing "Turkish beyond its conventional literary patterns" and compared to J.D. In this reader's opinion Mağden latest novel, ALI AND RAMAZAN, should push the author to the forefront for courageous writing about a subject that is disturbing (the state of some orphanages in Istanbul and the extent to which such orphans must go in order to survive) and weaving into that atmosphere one of the most tender love stories about two boys forgotten by society who survive their challenging lives because of their devotion to each other. 'Based on a true story', as stated in the frontispiece, makes this novel all the more compelling. But whether the facts are all true or not makes little difference in the powerful manner in which this story is related.
In an orphanage, filthy ad with little care given the boys who are kept there by a cook, two worthless 'cleaners' and a Master whose interest is more in drinking and using the boys for his physical pleasure than in tending to his duties as overseer, lives a beautiful and feisty lad Ramazan, called the 'Boss' because of his personality and his mastery of the game of marbles and any other playful diversion in this wretched atmosphere. Ramazan does not know the identity of his parents (they left him on the streets as an infant) so he imagines them to be popular Turkish movie stars and will come for him some day in a fancy car and restore him to a life of wealth. Into this place comes Ali whose mother murdered his drunken father and subsequently died leaving Ali with no family, homeless, whose only option was to be taken into the orphanage. To tell too much of the story would be to rob the pleasure of discovery for the reader. Suffice it to say that Ramazan and Ali, those physical and psychological opposites, bond in a manner that gradually becomes physical: they become lovers. Ramazan is the favorite of Master and suffers his affections: Master drinks heavily and is cruel to his docile wife and child. According to the orphanage rules all boys must be discharged at age 18 to face a life on the streets. Ramazan is older and joins the Turkish military, becoming a waiter for the officers. Ali joins the military later and when both boys are released form military duty they must find shelter; Ramazan continues his background as a prostitute, despite Ali's objections, and Ali buries his inability to find work by addiction to alcohol, drugs and sniffing solvents. The story is woven in and out of incidents that are terrifying for both boys who now as young men are bonded lovers. Traumas occur that test their love and it is the manner in which they face their lives that brings an end to this tale.
Mağden understands that fine line between relating the passion of love physically and emotionally that in other author's hands can become distasteful: she writes about the boys' physical relationship in a way that seems and feels very natural and needy. In Ali and in Ramazan she has created tow characters who will remain impressed on the memory long after completing this relatively short novel. It is a brilliant achievement and may just possibly be one of the finest books of the decade. The book was translated form the original Turkish by Ruth Whitehouse and her work is commendable. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for lovers of great literature.

This was a random pick from the new books shelf at the library . The blurb told me it is the story of two orphans who befriend each other and become inseparable - a "pair". I'm told it's tragic and that the book is a "testament to love finding its way even among the least visible citizens on Turkey's mean streets". Well, I'm thinking brotherly love. And, it's not that.
Before saying more, I'd like to say that I don't know what to make of the book and if there is anyone out there who knows something about Turkish literature I'd welcome their knowledge. If this was American, I think it would fall into the "ghetto lit" category.
Well, Ali and Ramazan are orphans. Ramazan is a bullyish kid who knows nothing of his origins. Ali is an orphan with a troubled past. His mother killed his father and poisoned herself. Ali is a gentle soul.
I have learned that it is not uncommon in Afghanistan for men to take a particular boy and care for them in exchange for sexual favors/abuse. This is what the Turkish Master of the orphanage does with Ramazan. So it is a natural path for Rami to grow up into a male prostitute - with other males. But he also pleasures himself with and falls in love with Ali. They become dependent upon each other. Ali copes with Ramazan's livelihood by huffing and drinking.
It's a tough story. Really tough. But I am conflicted. Magden (a woman) may have wanted to expose the world to a desperate Turkish population and its social problems, but she walked a very fine line between trashiness and literature. Overall, I felt she added a lot of unnecessary description. Leaving more to the imagination, saying less and inferring more would have made better literature. Telling all is trash. Therefore, I cannot recommend this book.

This story is not easy to read. Above all this story is not pleasant.
This is a story about child sexual abuse. It is a story about male prostitution.
But above it all, it is a story about finding love - the true love that makes a person want to be better, want to do more, and want to fiercely protect their beloved at all costs. But it is also a love that can be willfully blind.
Against the backdrop of an orphanage in Turkey, Ramazan, a beautiful boy who has been in an Istanbul orphanage since shortly after birth. For years the headmaster of the orphanage has sexually abused him, and through this he learned how to earn extras by prostituting himself.
When Ali comes to the orphanage after the death of both his parents, Ramazan is struck by how well the two of them fit together to make one whole person. For the rest of their lives, the two are intertwined. They are separated only when the mandatory army service takes one then the other away, but the two find their way back together.
I wish I could say that this story ended happily, that Ali and Ramazan overcame their demons through their love. I also wish I could say that there was some sort of real punishment for the abusive headmaster. I can't say either of those things, but I can say that this story stayed with me even after I finished it - and I finished it in less than two days.
Magden's writing would seem angsty and overwrought in any other setting, but for this story and for that time and for that place it was perfect.

As a translator, the only thing I want to comment on about this book is that it would be impossible to convey its true essence with another language. It's actually not even enough to know the language! You have to be Turkish to "get" this book. You have to have experienced the pains of being Turkish. You need to know people of different statuses, You have to know what Taksim means, you have to know what "Türkan Şoray" signifies etc. You need to know the difference between an Istanbul-born and an East Anatolian. So those giving it a low rating because they are reading this from a translation, know that you'll never understand what kind of feelings it actually awakens.
And I despise people who give a low rating because a book doesn't have what they expected; such as the teenage girls coming here giving twilight and 50 shades of grey 5 stars, and expecting a happy, satisfactory, "romantic" story.
This is the bare, ugly truth. This is much more real than your so-called love stories.

March 17, 2021Ramazan has known no other life than that as an orphan living in an orphanage in Istanbul. He is a confident, charismatic and beautiful boy, looked up to by his peers among whom he has his favourites, but he soon moves on. That is until Ali arrives at the orphanage - there is something about this big, good looking country boy that captivates Ramazan, and instead of tiring of him after a few months as he would with other boys he realises he is in love with Ali, and feeling that is reciprocated. From then on they are inseparable, that is until it is time at the age of eighteen for them to leave the orphanage. With a year between them they do not leave together, nor are they conscripted into the army at the same time, yet they endure the separation and get together again as soon as they have both served their country. But they are unprepared for life, and while their love never diminishes the difficulties of living as growing men takes its toll and will ultimately lead to tragedy.
The novel is based on a true story, and I was expecting great things of it, yet I felt let down. The two boys are likeable, yet I felt I never really got to know or understand them, it all seemed to be very much on the surface. Neither did the writing engage me, how much of this is down to the translation I cannot say, but it seemed very clipped, a great many short or very short sentences that hindered any fluent reading. As for the story I found myself at times losing patience, again due mainly to the way it is related, and it all became very depressing. But much as I liked the two protagonists I was never moved by any of the misfortunes that befell them, and this surely indicates that the writer (or translator) failed to make them live.
One thing did touch me though, and I encountered the same issue recently in another book, and that is the injustice of releasing boys from an orphanage as soon as they reach the age of eighteen totally unprepared for the world and without any support whatsoever. It is clearly a recipe or disaster, and if such things continue today hopefully this novel will help draw attention to the issue, and for this point alone I have given it an otherwise too generous three stars.

This is not an easy read; it is about child prostitution, male prostitution, destitution and drugs. It's also about two boys finding true love in each other. The kind of love that can be great, but can also go all wrong when taken to extremes and especially in the characters' situation.
While the book is about boys growing up and their lives as young adults, I hesitated to shelf this book under YA.

A good story but a REALLY bad translation. At times I was left cringing at how bad the grammar and sentence structures! For that reason I absolutely do not recommend the Kindle edition of this book.

Türk Edebiyatı'ndan çıkan queer kitaplar listesinde belki de başı çekebilecek kitaplardan biri olan Ali ile Ramazan'ı kendimden beklemediğim bir hızla bitirdim.
Ben Perihan Mağden'in kalemiyle ilk defa tanıştım. Yazarın anlatımı fazlasıyla sert ve bir o kadar da gerçekçi geldi bana; okurken pek çok defa durup boş boş etrafa bakmama sebep olacak türden.
Ali ile Ramazan'ın yolları yetimhanede kesiştikten sonra hayatlarının ne yöne evrildiğini ve onları nasıl paramparça ettiğini okuduğumuz bir kitap bu kitap. Yaşadıkları, hele de Ramazan'ın yaşadıkları, hiç kolay okunabilecek türden şeyler değil. İstismarın üzerinde fazlaca durulmuş, öyle ki benzer travmalara sahip insanları tetikleyebilecek kadar fazla. Durup durup düşündüm okurken: "Bunları yaşayan birileri var!" dedim, "Birileri var ve gerçeklerin üstü bir şekilde her zaman örtülüyor!" Görmezden gelinen, hakikatin reddedildiği, halı altına süpürüldüğü iğrenç bir dünyadayız hepimiz. Kimsesizlerin, o yetim çocukların neler yaşadığını veya yaşayacağını bir an bile düşünmediğimiz bir dünyadayız.
Perihan Mağden gerçekçi bir şekilde gösteriyor bize; boşuna hayal kurmayın, diyor. Kaçınılmaz son elbette gerçekleşecek bu hikayede de, diyor. Bu iki yetim ve birbirine aşık çocuğun yaşadıkları hayatın acısını her sayfada ve hatta her satırda yüzümüze çarpıyor.
Ali ile Ramazan'ı yalnızca bir "homoseksüel ilişki" romanı olarak görmemek gerekiyor ayrıca. Bu kitap, İstanbul'un ve hatta tüm Türkiye'nin kimsesizlere, "ötekilere" nasıl baktığını ve toplumun onları nelere zorladığını gösteren bir ayna niteliğinde. Ali ile Ramazan'ın aşkından çok daha fazlası.
Gel gelelim, kitabı okurken çok yoruldum. Devrik cümlelerle yapılan anlatılar beni her zaman yoruyor. Bir de romantizmden ve süslü hayallerden uzak, son derece gerçek bir hikayeyi devrik cümlelerle okuyunca zannediyorum normalden fazla yoruldum. Kitaptaki olaylar gayet akıcı, okudukça bir sonraki sayfaya geçmek istiyor ve neler olduğunu merak ediyorsunuz. Bu sebeple sıkıldım diyemem, yorulduğumu itiraf etmeliyim.

Ali ile Ramazan'ın yolları yetimhanede kesiştikten sonra hayatlarının ne yöne evrildiğini ve onları nasıl paramparça ettiğini okuduğumuz bir kitap bu kitap. Yaşadıkları, hele de Ramazan'ın yaşadıkları, hiç kolay okunabilecek türden şeyler değil. İstismarın üzerinde fazlaca durulmuş, öyle ki benzer travmalara sahip insanları tetikleyebilecek kadar fazla. Durup durup düşündüm okurken: "Bunları yaşayan birileri var!" dedim, "Birileri var ve gerçeklerin üstü bir şekilde her zaman örtülüyor!" Görmezden gelinen, hakikatin reddedildiği, halı altına süpürüldüğü iğrenç bir dünyadayız hepimiz. Kimsesizlerin, o yetim çocukların neler yaşadığını veya yaşayacağını bir an bile düşünmediğimiz bir dünyadayız.
Perihan Mağden gerçekçi bir şekilde gösteriyor bize; boşuna hayal kurmayın, diyor. Kaçınılmaz son elbette gerçekleşecek bu hikayede de, diyor. Bu iki yetim ve birbirine aşık çocuğun yaşadıkları hayatın acısını her sayfada ve hatta her satırda yüzümüze çarpıyor.
Ali ile Ramazan'ı yalnızca bir "homoseksüel ilişki" romanı olarak görmemek gerekiyor ayrıca. Bu kitap, İstanbul'un ve hatta tüm Türkiye'nin kimsesizlere, "ötekilere" nasıl baktığını ve toplumun onları nelere zorladığını gösteren bir ayna niteliğinde. Ali ile Ramazan'ın aşkından çok daha fazlası.
Gel gelelim, kitabı okurken çok yoruldum. Devrik cümlelerle yapılan anlatılar beni her zaman yoruyor. Bir de romantizmden ve süslü hayallerden uzak, son derece gerçek bir hikayeyi devrik cümlelerle okuyunca zannediyorum normalden fazla yoruldum. Kitaptaki olaylar gayet akıcı, okudukça bir sonraki sayfaya geçmek istiyor ve neler olduğunu merak ediyorsunuz. Bu sebeple sıkıldım diyemem, yorulduğumu itiraf etmeliyim.

Que bueno que la literatura ya progreso y existen cosas como RWRB o Heartstopper porque antes they didn´t let the gays be happy.
Esto empieza como una historia de amistad que progresa a romance entre dos amigos que viven en un orfanato en Estambul. Me pareció un inicio precioso con un estilo narrativo lirico y bello pero progresó a un capitulo de la rosa de Guadalupe o una versión de A little life con menos páginas, en donde solo se centraron en pain porn o en hacer sufrir a los personajes solo porque si. El libro toma un tono muy sórdido y de desesperación y aunque claro que hay vidas que sufren en este nivel, la autora incluía los eventos traumáticos que le pasaban a los personajes, mas por shock value que por otra cosa. Creo que si la autora hubiera explicado más el porque de las decisiones de los personajes y como su niñez tormentosa determino su vida adulta, hubiera sido una mejor ejecución. Aunque me gusto mucho la relación entre los personajes y se nota su química, si siento que pudieron haber tenido arcos de desarrollo más interesantes. Anyways, es otra historia de personas queer con final triste y creo que ya superamos esa época oscura.

dün uyuyamayınca gecenin bir yarısı başlamıştım, bugün öğlen saatlerinde bitti.
yazarın aynı adlı eserinden uyarlanan 'biz kimden kaçıyorduk anne?' dizisini izlemiştim ilk çıktığı vakit. çok enteresan ve farklı gelmişti. aynı kitabı okuyacağıma farklı bir eserini okuyayım diye düşünüp uzun süre önce kütüphaneme eklemiştim.
perihan mağden bir gazete haberinden esinlenerek yazmış bu kurguyu. gerçekçi yönleri asla yadsınamazdı. caddelerde yürürken önümüzden geçen kaç ali ve ramazan vardı da göremedik? okurken ali'ye ne kadar üzüldüysem ramazan'la bir türlü içselleştiremedim kendimi. hele ki öğretmen olayında! spoiler olmaması için çok değinmeyeceğim.
dili sokak ağzıyla yazılmıştı, benim edebi anlayışıma uyan bir biçem şekli değildi ne yazık ki. olay örgüsüyle bağdaşma açısından mantıklı bir seçim ama beni bir tık rahatsız etti. değil yerine 'diil' tarzı kelimeleri gördükçe kafamda düzeltme ihtiyacı hissettim. işleniş biçimi güzeldi, gözüme çarpan herhangi bir hata olmadı.

As a Nusayri I was happy to see a representation of our culture in the book. But other than that it was a heartbreaking experience to read this book. I struggled to finish it, because I relate to it more than I thought. I couldnt find Turkish version of it so I read its english translation. So I cannot comment on authors writing style, but I think in a way, that was not solely a novel, i4 is a document that faces us with the tragic fate of orphans, the Black hole of İstanbul and homophobia as well as racism in Turkey "thanks to ramazan's swearings". Next, Im gonna read "Who were we running from?" by the same author. There is also a netflix show of it.
