Homecoming tempts the reader with a promise of a serious science fiction work, which unfortunately, quickly leads to disappointment. The story concepts are patently simplistic and the characters don’t behave naturally, their emotions forced and exaggerated. The work may have appeal for young teen readers, but there is little in this book for mature lovers of SF seeking for depth and believable plotting.
Malcolm Petteway produces flashes of good writing that is entertaining and engaging, and his imagination captures the reader. By employing his writing skills to a serious, well-plotted work, he should find success as an author.
