With his life in ruins, Richard, Duke of Cleybourne, returned to his country estate to deal with the tragic loss he had suffered four years earlier. His plans, however, were interrupted by the arrival of Miss Jessica Maitland. The feisty, flame-haired governess had come to present her charge, Gabriella, as his new ward.
As if their unwelcome presence weren't bad enough, Jessica also revealed that Gabriella was in danger. Someone was after the girl's fortune— perhaps someone the duke knew only too well.
Now fate and a raging snowstorm have brought together an odd assortment of guests at Cleybourne Castle. And when murder strikes, Richard and Jessica must catch a killer and unravel a dark mystery, even as they are plunged into the most passionate mystery of all—the secrets of the hidden heart.

I loved it! It finished so sweet. Sign. Okay, back to the beginning. After reading book one last week I was very intrigued by the hero of this book as well as the next one and I couldn't stop thinking about it, so I decided to continue the series much earlier than I usually do.
The hero here is so deep in his grief that he's contemplating suicide. Our heroine is a very strong character and is able to help him through his darkness in a very imaginative way. (Not really, but also not the standard way hehe)
This book is full of mystery, suspense, and non stop puzzles. The end was great and I am so glad that the hero didn't allow the heroine to do what she wanted.
Here we have some of the characters from book one but I would say you do not need to read book one to understand this one. However, you would appreciate your hatred towards some characters more openly.
After the first book, I was hooked to this family and their star crossed love lives. But the second book was a bit of a disappointment as much as I liked both the mcs and their chemistry. The H deserved happiness and the h was just the person to bring love and life back to him.
But the problem was the veering off to the additional subplots - almost as if the author needed fillers to give volume to the book. So we are served a suspense and an investigative endeavour worthy of Miss Marple!
And I feel the author did a disservice to Lady Vesey, the evil ow from the previous book, by dragging her in here and diluting her allure and effectiveness as the wicked wanton who lures and ruins many a lives. (Having started the third book, let me tell you she makes an appearance there as well!)
Richard is on his way to kill himself, he can't live with the death of his wife and child four years ago anymore. That is until Jessica mainland and his ward dhow up at his doorstep out of the blue. Even though I liked Richard in the beginning, him telling his story revealed so much more of his good personality that I liked him that much more. Richard and Jessica are adorable together. Oh, my the Duke of Cleybourne must catch a killer and romance shouldn't get in the way. I found it hard to put down.
Enjoyable read, nicely written plot with a hint of mystery, with very likeable main characters and some unlikeable villains (as it should be!). Its obvious for me that Candace Camp is an author that I like very much to read! I sure love a good murder mystery and the kindling governess to duke romance was lovely as well. Sweet Story. This is book two in the series and pretty much what you'd expect. Fun characters with a fast paced plot. A little intrigue a little romance. Nothing terribly specific about this one. The villain was not who I expected. I simply liked the characters and the way they interacted. The story didn't feel 100% recycled the way many of them do, even though it touched on many of the same issues. Another excellent Candace Camp novel. An absolutely charming romance couched in the environment of a Miss Marple type mystery. Well written, some mystery, liked the romance.
Meh. Mediocre. Some weird attempt at a house party whodunnit agatha style without the christie skill. No development of the main relationship, which felt skimmed over amidst all the other drama. At best they had the hots for each other (language that would fit right in with some of the other anachronisms peppering the book).
I ended up liking the side characters like Rachel and the General and the ward Gabriella way more than the rather bland leads. I found even the butler and housekeeper to be more interesting.
Sex scenes revved from 0-100 after they had known each other barely five minutes in the most ridiculously unlikely way. She showed no concern for how her decisions would affect her future ability to stay with her pupil/almost daughter and he none for his ward. Legit the thoughts never even crossed their minds.
Also their reaction to that dude trying the door of the kid was weirdly mild. He was warned, how did that attempt at rape just get glossed over? What did they think he'd have done if her door was unlocked. The author covered that incident like the reader was supposed to be amused at the antics of a pedo who 'just cant help himself'.
Sigh. So apparently this very readable and addictive series is all about the TOTALLY USELESS AND OFF-PUTTING TWISTS. I was a bit bored by the whodunnit plot, but I did like the leads enough to keep reading -- THEN we find out that the beloved first wife was a shallow hussy. This added absolutely nothing to the plot and actually undermined what was lovable about the H. Also, it made his actions completely nonsensical. You can't tell me a person would only blame themselves in the situation where their spouse steals their child and internally still idolizes said wife and stays faithful to her and feels guilt about lusting for someone else. Just totally unnecessary. Blech.

This book was the absolute best!! I really don't even know what to say. It was just phenomenal! The story was full of surprises and kept my attention from beginning to end. What an exciting read, I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book! So much happened, I laughed, I cried and I enjoyed every minute of it! The characters are AMAZING! I connected with the hero and heroine and felt that I was right there in the story, it came alive. 5 stars, no hesitation! This is my favourite book of hers. I highly recommend it!
Candace Camp excels at weaving suspense, drama and romance together for a heartwarming fast paced story. I know when I pick up a book by her, I will be pulled into history with wonderful characters that will come alive as I turn the pages. My favorite trope, the damaged hero, Richard, Duke of Cleybourne returns to his estate after four years to deal with the terrible loss he had suffered. Feeling at the end of his rope, fate steps in and brings him an unexpected ward, Gabriella and her feisty, beautiful governess, Miss Jessica Maitland. Of course it can always get worse when Richard learns that Gabriella is in danger and someone is after her fortune. What more can happen? A whirlwind of mystery and mayhem trying to catch a killer and deal with the sparks flying between Jessica and Richard. Who will win out? This book can be read as a standalone but trust me, you will want to read the entire series!!
Enjoyable read, nicely written plot with a hint of mystery, with very likeable main characters and some unlikeable villains (as it should be!). Its obvious for me that Candace Camp is an author that I like very much to read!
Richard, Duke of Cleybourne, is very heartsick feeling like his life is in ruins, he returns to his country estate an old castle that has been in his family for generations to try to deal with the tragic loss he suffered four years earlier. All of his plans are interrupted by the arrival of Miss Jessica Maitland a feisty, flame haired governess who has come to present her charge, Gabriella, as his new ward.
Now as if their unwelcome presence isn't enough, Jessica has also revealed that Gabriella is in danger. Someone is after the young girls fortune and it may or maynit be someone the Duke knows very well.
Now fate and ofcourse an unexpected snowstorm have brought an odd assortment of unexpected guests to Claybourne Castle. When a murder happens, Richard and Jessica must catch the killer and unravel a dark mystery, as they are plunged into the most passionate mystery of all. The Secrets of the Hidden Heart.
Candace Camp is absolutely brilliant. This book started off with a bang and ended up in fireworks. I loved it and had a really hard time putting this book down and going back to life. It is the perfect blend of history, romance, and mystery to keep you on your toes. I would recommend this book to other readers.
❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋 It’s reading books as good as this that make me realise why I love Historical Romance so much . This story has everything you could possibly want , A Duke , A governess, a suspicious death , a room hopping house party, revenge , Secrets , snow and much more besides. It’s one of those books that you can’t stop reading ,and it gives you a feel good factor at the end. Candace has not disappointed in this one . I received an advanced copy of this book and chose to submit a review
note: virgin-heroine, Widower-Hero, governess-duke (my favorite combination hahaha), mystery, many characters in the story
We learned about the duke of Cleybourn from book 1. And I'm intrigued as him as I'm with Michael (his brother-in-law). I'm not disappointed with Richard's story actually. And I like the heroine, Jessica, too. She's feisty :-)
This book grabbed my attention and held me captive until the end. I love romance. I love mystery with suspense and maybe a murder or two. Well this book had it all. Richard and Jessica, these two could be Boe Runners right along with Cobb. There are a number of unique characters that I think you will like. Read the book. It was a great read for me.
Candace Camp was the first historical romance author that I read and immediately knew that I loved. That was 15+ years ago, but rereading The Hidden Heart reaffirmed that feeling.
Richard and Jessica are likable and you get to feel their relationship develop. The mystery subplot is genuinely engaging. There's humor that actually made me laugh out loud, and the breadcrumbs we got of Rachel and Michael were enough to get me eager for the next book, even though I already know what happens.
I love Camp, and this book is definitely one of the highlights of her bibliography.
Trilogia dos Aincourt Livro 02. O Castelo das Sombras. Candace Camp H.R.R.
2.5⭐️ After enjoying the first book in the series I was disappointed in The Hidden Heart. It was short on romance and long on mystery, which wasn’t particularly satisfying after all was said and done. Also, while all authors rely on their favorite tics and tells, there were so many callbacks to Camp’s other books I felt like I was experiencing deja vu.
Quibble: A preponderance of awkward adverbs. For example— snow, “…everything glistened whitely.”
The Duke goes home to kill himself. He winds up with a new ward and a governess who drives him absolutely crazy. Add in some unexpected(and unwanted) guests, a massive snowstorm, and a mystery and what do you get? Another fantastic Candace Camp novel.
I loved Jessica from the very beginning. As you were reading, you could almost physically feel how much she adored and cared about Gabriella. You could tell she was willing to do anything to protect the girl from harm. I loved her backbone. The way this character took charge in the face of adversity made me enjoy reading from her POV. The fact that she didn't seem to be intimidated by anyone, whether it be a duke or unsavory relatives, made her one of my most favorite female characters.
I loved the banter between Jessica and Richard. I thought it was hilarious everytime Jessica managed to get under the duke's skin. I looked forward to their interactions with each other. I don't think Richard knew what hit him when Jessica went through the halls screaming his name. I loved that Jessica was able to brink Richard back from the brink of destruction. You could see Richard coming back alive throughout the novel. They always had a short fuse around each other, and for some reason it made me love their love story even more.
The murder mystery intrigued me. I was extremely disappointed that the 2 people I wanted to die didn't. But other than that, the mystery was well written, and the main villain was not who I expected it to be. I would recommend this to anyone who loves a historical mystery with a touch of fiery passion. One of my favorite books to read in a while!
After the success of the the first book, I was looking forward to this one.
Richard, The Duke of Cleybourne, still mourns the death of his wife and daughter, even four years later, when he cannot handle the pain anymore, he travels to his ancestral castle to hopefully succumb to the pain and die on the anniversary of their deaths. Only problem is, he somehow ends up with a fourteen years old ward and a rather attractive razor sharp tongued governess along with her, who he cannot resist no matter what.
Just like the previous book, I loved both the protagonists of the book, their strong personalities usual brought them head-to-head, but they were admirable, their chemistry quite genuine and both managed to heal and change each other in good ways.
The reason I couldn't grant the book 5 stars was because of how long the mystery side story was dragged, it could've been easily solved ahead and more time could've been given for Richard and Jessica to come closer.
Other than that, I liked the other side characters a lot, especially Gabriela and I can't wait to star on Rachel's book next. The other characters, the uninvited guests all snowed in made up for some funny and interesting scenes. There were some downright hilarious scenes, even some with Lord Vesey. Although I feel Leona's dangerous seductively evil personality was rather ruined here, she came off as a silly harpy more like. Oh well, can't complain about that.
I liked the characters here, and particularly the secondaries, Rachel and Gabriela. I also liked Jessica as a heroine; I like that she's self-reliant, knows what she wants, and is willing to do what's necessary to get it. As far as the plot, however, I liked the idea of the mystery subplot much more than the execution — a bunch of red herrings were thrown up, but it felt like just random chaos until the mystery conveniently unraveled itself, rather than a methodical collection of clues leading to a resolution. And as far as interpersonal relationships go, this is basically How Not To Treat A Depressed Person 101; . Luckily that part was brief enough not to ruin the entire story for me, but it definitely left a sour taste in my mouth. And mechanically, the writing felt clunky and downright juvenile at times; the sting lines throughout in particular (e.g. "The housekeeper had been right. The duke was going to kill himself!" p. 84, italics in the original) were patently ridiculous. Overall, not the worst thing I've ever read, but this author has certainly done better since.
Romanzo storico davvero super consigliato! Leggeró sicuramente altri libri dell'autorice💕
I read the first in this series eons ago, and have had the third on my TBR shelf for eons as well. In an effort to empty some of that overburdened piece of furniture, I have been looking out for the missing links in series to read. This was part of the project. It has been so long since I read the first that it was like picking up a standalone, and that worked fairly well, even if I sensed there was backstory I was missing. I'm not sure if I've traded away the first in the meantime - if not I might pick it up again before finally reading the third. There was quite a bit of angst in this, with people meeting untimely ends, etc... but it was a good story and I enjoyed reading this author again after a long time away. I was a bit surprised at the casualness with which the couple gave in to their attraction, given potential consequences etc etc... Also I was a bit disappointed the hero didn't seemed burdened by any restraint other than that of guilt about his past and his lack of deserving anything ressemblng joy, to his mind. Ah well.. he was an aristocrat and they did tend to not think overmuch about what might happen to others.
This was absolutely an AMAZING READ!!! Ever since reading the first in this series I’ve been waiting to read all about Richard, he’s such a virile sexy man he just ouzes sensuality. I read this in one sitting I just couldn’t put it down. What seems to be a man mourning the love of his life is not as everyone thought there’s a scandal behind that. But the loss of his little girl has left a huge hole in his heart. Jessica is awesome doesn’t take any crap by no one especially a snobbish Duke you will not meet his ward. Both characters had amazing chemistry their witty banter so full of sexual tension just heated up the pages. Lots of intense moments a mystery and so many secondary characters that just keep you on your toes with intrigue. This was just superbly done and I can’t wait to read the next one! Candace Camp has the gift of a true story teller!
I recieved a complimentary copy, this is my honest unbiased opinion.
