Maximize profits by getting the most out of every tax deduction. No matter what kind of small business you have, what size it is, or how quickly it's growing, you need to reap all the benefits of legitimate personal and business deductions come tax time. Evelyn Jacks, Canada's best-selling and most trusted tax author, cuts through the jargon with the third edition. Make Sure It's Deductible presents important tax facts in a clear, friendly style that's easy to read, understand, and apply to your business. After assisting more than 14,000 entrepreneurs, this fully revised and updated edition of the tax-saving classic includes new ways maximize new tax brackets, rates, and tax-free zones for each family member; understand the new rules for deducting fines, tools, and other assets; take advantage of new perks for small business owners; minimize taxes and maximize social benefits; and utilize the new lower corporate tax rates and higher small business deductions.
Good overview of some of the basic considerations in small business tax planning. A lot of tax rules are the result of confusing political and legal compromises, and these complications amplify each other, so it's nice to get a sense of what the government cares about most in each case. I don't earn much money from self-employment but this makes each deduction more useful to me and worth thinking about.
This book gives a fair amount of information on deductions, but too much time is spent on RRSPs and tax splitting with family members rather than focusing on strictly small business matters. Considering that the author is one of Canada's best-known tax experts, this was rather disappointing. It should be noted that the Toronto Public Library is still loaning out this 2007 edition in 2012 even though the contents are becoming dated. Overall, a 3 out of 5.
