Breaking Chance

Rate this book
What a girl wants and what a girl needs are sometimes two different things…

For Melissa “Lucky” Chance, another stretch in Ganymede’s ice prison is nothing new. The flash-freeze that’s supposed to destroy her will only leaves her with an insatiable desire for the first hot body she lays eyes on. Except this time, she faces a death sentence. Her only hope of escape lies with the man known as The Butcher.

John Ramius understands the logic behind his conviction as a criminally insane mass murderer. No man should have been able to slaughter over fifty men in as many minutes, but no one sees the underlying curse that compels him to sense—and fulfill—someone’s deepest need. Chance’s skill will free him to kill the Sun-King; he will find no rest until he does.

As they run from the forces of the Jovian colonies, Ramius finds himself temporarily sidetracked, not only by Chance’s relentless desire, but by her underlying, unspoken need. Ignoring it—or his own compulsion to do every wicked thing imaginable to her—is not an option.

Only after all their defenses are stripped away do they discover that their meeting wasn’t by chance. Someone is manipulating them both, and the only way out is the path to their destruction…

This book contains explicit sex, thieves, murderers, a sentient ship and a hero who will give you exactly what you need. Not responsible for reader’s sudden compulsion to jump significant other’s bones.

This was a very well written short story. I could clearly see where it could have been a much longer novel. I wish that it had been. We really needed to know more about the weird problem the hero had that made him tap in to what the people around him wanted and then be compelled to give it to them. More explanation would have maybe convinced me that he really loved her not that he was somehow compelled to be with her. More time could have been given to the political situation. The sentient ship was very interesting but very undeveloped. I really wanted to see more of that aspect. Then too the romantic relationship would have benefited from more scenes.

All that is not to say that it was bad because it was far from bad. The world building was very strong for such a short work. The tech was different and interesting and I would have liked to know more about the heroine and how and why she could manipulate the tech. The writing was of a quality that I'm left scratching my head wondering why the author only wrote a short story. This is clearly an author who is capable of more.

When Melissa “Lucky” Chance is again facing another set of charges after being caught for thievery and sexy conduct the authorities deem unsuitable, she assumes she will have to go prison and escape again. But this time she finds herself she may have played with fire once too many times as the ruling and visiting judge has sentenced her to death along with a dangerous murderer John Ramius. The only way to get out of this mess, Chance has to team up with this dark and dangerous man who may not have very good intentions towards her, but to survive she may have to entrust him to escape their looming execution.

This book was part of the recent splurge I had on sci fi romance and I am very thankful that I picked this up because it was a fun, sexy and engaging read! For a novella it packed a lot of action and emotion and there was interesting surprises and twists that I did not expect.

Ramius’ character really reminded me a lot of Vin Diesel’s, Riddick from the Pitch Black movies, there was a real sense of menace and danger at the beginning of the book and I think it really added to the sexual tension with Chance, who is really drawn to him in a lot of ways despite knowing and fearing he might harm her, Chance on the other hand is the opposite of Ramius’ character and is brash and cocky and impulsive. I really liked how she rebelled against her Government and was able to subvert the controlling chip, that all citizens are forced to have. She was a fantastic foil to Ramius and vise versa and it made their romance more believable especially when they force each other to face their past, later in the book.

I really felt that over the course of the story, from the tense beginning to the big ending they both balanced each other well and along with the high octane action. The romantic developments did not falter, but built up to an emotional one with surprising revelations from Ramius which really fleshed out his character even more.

However I do wish there was more about the sentient living ship, Drew, which Chance and Ramius steal to escape the authorities. He showed great possibilities and I especially loved his interactions with Chance and Ramius, but because this was such a short book, the ending does leave things open for more but ends satisfactorily if there are no sequels. But I really liked the setting and the premise that Kim Knox sets out and if you fancy a quick and sexy read with emotional depth I highly recommend this book!

The weakest story I've yet to read by this author. Though the action is relentless and nonstop, and the characters potentially intriguing, the romance was entirely unbelievable, and felt very shoehorned in. It's not a good sign when the character I want most to get a happy ending is the AI spaceship.

Good story, entertaining, lots of action, sex and character insight, well written despite a few missing words. I really wanted another scene with the ship at the end, makes the story feel a little undone.

I was in the mood for some fun sci-fi romance and I'm a big fan of novella length work, so I figured I'd try this out. It was actually way better than I thought it would be. The sci-fi elements run more towards space opera, but unlike other sci-fi romances I've read, this one actually puts time into the world building to the point where it wasn't just an afterthought and more or less made sense. The main couple had a lot of legitimate chemistry, the sex scenes were hot and I was actually rooting for the two to get together, so the romance elements clearly did their job. It's short, but a complete story, and I didn't feel like it was incomplete at that length, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a quick sci-fi romance fix.

Too short but still very good. I wish the author had explained Ramius' curse, why he needed to be what others wanted him to be. And how did he get all of his special powers? He was only human. I though they were a good couple, they helped each other heal some emotional wounds. Would have been fantastic if the story was longer and the characters had more time to develop. The end seemed a bit silly, but the emotional connection is well worth the read.

Excellent characters, hot sex, a unique use of telepathy and a cool ship. What more can you ask for? Personally, I wish it had been longer. More time in the world, with the characters, and a little longer to develop everything because some of the plot/character developments happen almost a bit too quickly.

If Ms. Knox writes a sequel I shall definitely buy it.

This story had potential, but the whole thing felt rushed. Over the course of a novel, with some build-up, some sexual tension and some deeper development of the characters, this would have been great.

Chance is too much of a slut for me to want to continue reading. After 5 mentions of her fucking anything that walks and throwing herself at the same person 3+ times, I'm done.

I LOVED this. Emergence was my fave to date but now it has a rival. Great story, love scifi! Steamy love scenes. Wish it was longer!
