Very different in tone from Study in Lilac - much more unhappy - and more difficult material, too, dealing with sex work, human trafficking, and sexual abuse. And while I truly never saw the twist ending coming, it felt kind of like cheating. Still, I enjoyed it well enough, and would pick up the third book if there were an English translation. 3.5 stars, rounding to 4.
