Zbeletryzowana biografia królowej Anglii - Elżbiety I.

I lost count of how many times I read this book in my childhood. Recently I was reminded of it and was yearning for it so much as one can only yearn for their childhood favourite. My loving Mum promptly sent me a copy, and so I've read it again and discovered that the charm is still working.

George Bidwell wrote his books in English, but those originals were never published. His Polish wife translated them, and only those translations got published, so the books have never been available to the English-speaking audience. It's probably not such a big loss - from the point of view of a historian, Bidwell's books are nothing to recommend. He'd done his research well, there's no denying that, but he was also extremely biased. However, the main charm of his books was not based on his craft as a historian, but on his skill as a writer. There is very little conjecture in his writing as his books are not novels - they're belletristic biographies. A great resource to get children hooked on history, of which I am a living example.
