Honestly, the introduction of Thorkell the Tall was enough to make this such a fun volume. What a crazy lunatic he seemed! And there's clearly more to him than what he was able to share.
The artwork, especially when the action kicks in, is awesome! So is the gore. ;)
All I can say is wow. The artwork, story and characters are all amazing. I've got to say, Thorkell the Tall has to be one of the more memorable characters I've had the the pleasure reading, in recent memory. All in all, just an awesome read from start to finish.
The battle scenes in this volume were a little hard to take. If you can't take gore in your manga, stay away from this series! It's the goriest one I have read.
We're introduced to a new baddie: Thorkell. He's a massive man who loves to fight and gets mad whenever his enemies run away from him. He's such a zany character! I love all the interactions between Thorkell and Thorfinn.
I almost always love the bonus story at the end even more than the main one! No exception here. Bring out more Ylva!
A bit theatrical but does not sugar coats it's characters.
World: The art is fantastic, the level of detail in the art direction and background is a testament to the quality of the art. The world building is also really strong with a lot of research and world building done through the art. There is little to no info dumping but the depth is still there. We get some more history this time around and it's a welcome.
Story: The story moves fast and with great writing. The pacing is spot on and the emotions and interactions are as long as they need to be to mean something. Tying the history and the fiction together is good and having Thorfinn as the point of view is good. I love how the book does not sugar coat him at all or sanitize the world of the time. Raping and reaving are the norm and the book does not go out of it's way to make it seem nice and cool. The pieces that move the story are interesting with the war in England and the figures that push the story.
Characters: Thorfinn is well realized. He's a but dense in terms of the honor which is very Japanese manga but the way he reacts to thieving and the violence and raping is very accurate for its time and I commend the book for sticking to this accuracy. The rest of the cast are also interesting and while some are a hit over the top the emotions and the depth is there.
This is probably going to be a very unpopular opinion but I feel like it still needs to be expressed. I have had the same issue with this book as with the first two, which is the blend of different genre not working well together. But now, you really have to add casual sexism to it all.
This book still seeks to set the story in a context/environment which is historically accurate, it shares cultural information and facts in an attempt to be educational, and yet at the same time, we've got fantasy (Thorkell displaying superhuman strength and getting rid of Thorfinn as if he were throwing a shot put… Really?) and humour, and those three elements undermine each other.
Regarding the mix of fantasy and historical accuracy, I would say it "only" disserves the educational/accuracy purpose and by extension - for me - the interest you have for the story. The real problem, however, lies with the use of humour. A lot of the protagonists so far have regularly appeared silly and goofy, along with secondary characters/extras drawn in the background to set the mood. Which could definitely work if you wanted a comic manga with "Viking vibes", which is not the case here. It could even probably work – being both goofy and educational and dark and whatever else you want (Ricky Gervais, anyone?) – if executed masterfully. But I guess this is where the problem really lies.
So, for a manga which still seeks to be historically accurate and dark and rich, we are left with a very superficial work of fiction. Superficial and problematic.
And there we arrive at the scene that made me decide to write this review. On exactly pages 138-139 (French edition), you stumble upon a rape scene. I say “stumble” and should almost add "breeze by" because it literally lasts a "forgettable" double page, leaving you with the feeling that nothing worthy of attention actually happened.
Before anyone thinks that I stormed here to leave an offended/angry comment, this truly made me pause and reflect, and I did some research as to how people felt about the scene and why. Turns out, all the comments I could find praised the scene and style (I would love to have statistics about Vinland Saga’s readers: gender, age, etc. It feels like they were all young men/boys, hence how relevant this all is). Their arguments? Vikings did commit rape back in the good ol' days so this type of scene only adds to the realistic dimension of the manga. Also, they committed it very regularly whereas here, the book does not linger on it, it is done very casually so honestly, what could anyone have to complain about? Right. Well, exactly that, actually. Of course, the Vikings did display extreme violence and they were familiar with bloodshed, stealing, rape and other atrocities. So of course, you should expect it in historical fiction whether in books or on screen. And I am of the opinion that it should be depicted. What you see and read that impacts you always fosters conversation, which is welcome, and choosing not to show it would be lying and reductive. Which, in the end, Vinland Saga really is.: reductive. I have found multiple reviews praising/mentioning Vinland Saga as being strongly feminist. I am only 3 books down so far, but we all know that the first books of a saga set the tone, and so far, it could not be any less feminist than it is.
The only female characters we have encountered so far are either desexualized because they are presented as children or mother figures who only show empathy and physical weakness, or hyper-sexualized and products of the male gaze (appearing naked, with big breasts, ideally virgins…). The only exception is Ylva, and what a very feminist figure she is, indeed! She is so cliché it is laughable: she is your typical tomboy – although she is obviously very beautiful by our patriarchal society’s standards – does not fit any feminine norms, physically (she is super strong, obviously!) or otherwise because she enjoys fishing whales and curses and wishes she could own slaves to get help with everyday chores. Wow.
But that was not enough, no. Because then, you stumble upon this rape scene. If you blink, you miss it. If you read too quickly or “casually, you miss it. A random young woman, gets gang banged in a barn where our protagonist is sleeping. It wakes him up (Oops, poor him!) and he just “casually” leaves after witnessing the scene, without any word. Apparently, it shows his lack of empathy because of what he was a victim of in his childhood. Right… Well, there were plenty of other ways to show that. It was even ok to use this scene to show it. Just. Not. Like. This. Because what is the effect here?
Casual sexism.
First, the argument that Vikings committed rape is not enough. Sure, they did. But reducing them to violence and rape (mixed with them having supernatural physical abilities and goofing around) is uneducated, (disrespectful) and harmful. Secondly, the way you showcase anything on screen or on paper says a lot about your way of thinking and about what your objectives are. You can – and should – address rape in the media. Once again, Ricky Gervais addressed this topic masterfully – along with the notion of humour and whether we can truly laugh about anything – in his show "Humanity". It all comes down to how it is treated. Here, it lasts a second. It is not dealt with in any way. It does not appeal to any emotion or reflection (on the contrary, don’t think, it’s completely normal!). The characters are depicted and speak in a very juvenile way, along with the ones in the next scene when the audience’s view extends to the “party” outside the barn. You feel like you are witnessing male teenagers, laughing dumbly, and while the rape is happening in the background, they are speaking “casually” with their mate(s). This is the problem. This is contributing to the normalization and trivialization of rape. This is not much, I agree (quite literally when you consider the quantity of paper and ink involved!), but that is the point, actually. This is what contributes, on a daily basis, to rape culture. Because it is pervasive. Slowly but surely, along with all of the other instances that we encounter in everyday life and the media, it contributes to desensitize us. So, arguments are used, like “But that’s how it was in the past”. No, it wasn’t. “But that is the character(s) speaking”. Yes, but the way the characters are depicted and made to interact with others and the way themes are explored in the work of fiction are a product of the writer/director. Ultimately, my problem with Vinland Saga is with what it is attempting – and failing – to be because of its tone and the way it deals with…everything in its story.
A lot of characters were potentially interesting but reduced to a mix of clichés and comic relief characteristics. The storyline is so slow you lose interest. And the time period, which is so culturally rich, is reduced to what the author has chosen to show us, which is even far less than what the Wikipedia page about “Vikings” offers us.
Not only is it failing on all these basic aspects, but it is contributing to casual sexism, and it does so while almost priding itself to do the opposite. Let’s be clear, there has been NOTHING feminist so far in Vinland Saga and saying otherwise is either hypocritical or naïve, and deeply harmful.
Thornkell basically is itching to kill and I’m seriously worried about thornfinn. All i hope that that lady (who stole a ring and all her family plus village got slaughtered) is fine since i still worry about her. So the prince is either a girl.. cuz he cooks better than me and his hair all pulled back in a ponytail is soooo cuuuuute!!!!! Askelland actually wanted to kill ganar (the prince right-hand man) since he was defending the prince all along and he knew that this will make the prince ‘man-up’.
Askelland is known for his quick strategic thinking and in this volume i learned that he keeps his valuable cards close, he actually knows his next move before he makes it.. that is what i admire about him.
Let me just shed light on that page where thornkell tries to battle this man (one of askelland men) and he gives him a sword but then the guy just blacks out.
All in all, another exciting volume. I am in love with this manga.

In this book , you might be fascinating continuance of the story because there is big stories turning point. After Askeladd assault the small village, Askeladd thought his group killed all of the people but unfortunately one girl was still survived. She reported Thorkell where Askeladd group latent so Thorkell's group also ran after them. Member whose in Askeladd group start to doubt Askeladd decision. One more big event is fighting Thorkell and Thorfinn. Thorfinn revenge Thorkell that fighting ending is a very good. No one know this ending. The author is very good story maker. He used many background and situation. He also good that explain many character's emotion. This is such a good action story. This book is little bit grotesque, it is good point, very realistically when somebody died. I want to read No'4 too. Because story is finished really nice scene. I prefer to read this book people who like to read nice action and story line Japanese manga. I like to read Japanese action manga, animation. I never seen these nice story manga. To sum up, I want to know each character's future because author did make nice story line and very clearly writing battle scene.
