The Bad Guys #8

Trick of the Night

Rate this book

It was okay, which is always a Goodreads 2 stars. (Hover your mouse above the rating stars to see.)

Trick of the Night was almost a complete repeat of book 7 but slightly longer. It's nothing but getting from point a to b, with pointless bits about sketchy travel companions and Fiend's Night, which could have been entirely skipped.

It's almost a repeat of book 5, except that had the wonderful dash across the great erg at the end plus the wedding sequence to make up for the travel bits. This was like that, except no fun bits. Felt like an underdeveloped grab for money, as did book 7. And the last 3 Good Guy Montana books.

What worked was the developing relationship between Hellion and Clyde (whose name is for some reason back to having two t's without explanation). There was almost no interaction with the new goddess and very little with gargoyles. Rose and the other non-sailing sidekicks were almost entirely forgotten and Nox was even more of a caricature than even last volume. I think 4 new characters ended up being added but outside the singing elephant man, can't remember them at all. Even elephant guy failed to make any deep impression and I don't recall there being any conversations with him to explore who he was and why he was there.

There was a one-joke entitled princess who showed up with her coterie for a bit. And...I can't really remember anything else even though I just finished reading this yesterday.

At least after two volumes, they finally make it to the next sidequest. Of course, returning home to the dangling plot would be nicer. Natalie got something like one thought and two sentences. The teacher with the mustaches and agoraphobia (whose name I can no longer remember) got none. Lots of interactions Carchedonian slavers but none with the mighty prince and the slavers at this point have become drooling idiots, just mindlessly capturing whoever they can. Faceless villains.

I'm not done with this series. I look forward to the next volume. But after 5 volumes of progression-free filler, I am no longer buying the books. I'm just borrowing them on Kindle Unlimited.

Listened on Audible.
5 Stars for Neil Hellegers' narrating.
1.5 Stars for the story.

Ugh. So Good Guys / Bad Guys have been my favorite LITRPG series since Good Guys Book 1. But the last few entries in the Bad Guys series have been meandering, go-nowhere, side adventures that really don't advance anything. There was zero character development on the main party this entire book. I'm really beginning to think Eric Ugland just doesn't know what he wants to do with this story. And it's a shame because I truly do love his work. So Eric... baby, bubbe, bubulah... maybe take a little time off and refocus if that's what you need to do. Or put more time into Good Guys until you sort this one out. I want to give Eric 5 stars on everything because I know the talent is there, but can't in good consciousness. The BEST thing this series (and Good Guys) have going for it is Neil Hellegers. I would be tapping out now without him. But instead, I'll wait for the next entry hoping we can get something that resembles what I love about these series.

Trick of the Night
The Bad Guys Series: Book 8
By Eric Ugland

Overview:
The last couple of books were meandering money-grabs and as the story continues to be distracted, unmotivated, and uninteresting in this volume, I think this is where I’m going to bow out of the series altogether. Kind of disappointing considering books 1-5 were really well done, especially 4 & 5. Nothing of any significance happened in book 8. The new characters were unmemorable. You could literally start at the opening paragraph and then skip to the closing paragraph and you’d be none the wiser (or dumber). 2/5 stars.

Summary:
Well yet again the author chooses to distract Clyde from the main quests (plural) at hand, that of the City of Darkness and maybe one day returning to Glatton where Princess Nadya and his entire neighborhood of vassals and tenants await his return. Apparently any town Clyde enters from here on out he’s going on the moral high ground and takes it upon himself to correct things via dastardly means like slavery and impoverished people.

One of the problems with the last few books is that certain characters are being killed off and then new ones are brought on. Learning who the new ones are takes time and patience. I’d much rather have the old ones back so that I don’t need to start fresh. What’s worse is that the new ones don’t seem that interesting and the old ones are getting more detestable, at least as much as the last couple books portray them. Rose was hardcore and enigmatic at first, now she’s vanishing into obscurity with no new information about her revealed, much like how Natalie Glatton became in the GG series after book 3. Nox has taken a nosedive as well. A complete coward and incompetent travel companion is his role now. The most we can hope for is a pithy conversation between him and Clyde. Lux has morphed from the hot, seductive chick to a nattering motherly figure. Harpy is the sea expert but that’s all he is. Everyone is typecast and booooorrrriiinnnggg.

I really don’t like the new trajectory of Clyde’s class either. Instead of an intriguing Rogue-Thief with necromantic support spells, he’s now a sneaky Mage that can cast all of his old spells if he so chooses (but is held back by a stupid plot implement seemingly at random “I don’t want to attract the attention of the gods unless I absolutely have to”) but needs to relearn his Rogue type skills apparently. I feel like the series just started itself over (which in a lot of ways it did in the last book). But I don’t want to start over, I want to continue as if it’s book 8 and not book 2. I want a bad guy who can sneak, back stab, pick locks, cut purses, raise the dead, and forcibly pull bones out of his hapless victims but who ISN’T A MAGE. Granted, he hasn’t actually chosen to be a Mage class officially, I just don’t like the idea of a Jack-of-All, Master of none sort of class.

And c’mon already. Clyde is level 4 and knowing how the author writes these books, he’ll be level 4 for the next 10 books. Yet his spells land on opponents 50 levels above him regardless of his character level or his skill level. Eric writes lame LitRPG’s.

The Good:
* The fight scenes, loot, and humor continue to be one of the series’ redeeming qualities.
* It seems we’re not done with necromancy after all. The part in which Clyde stitched himself back together was particularly interesting in a gruesome sort of way. And hoorah to excessive use of Viscous Wrench!
* Although I still miss Bone Sight, moments in Mage Sight continue to be interesting.
* Despite other friends being killed off in the series like Mornax and Clara, I’m thankful and hopeful for the ones still around, specifically the unexpected burgeoning friendship between Clyde and Hellion as they explore telepathic communication.
* Gaza attempting to take off in flight each time he needs to spy something out continues to be hilarious.
* I’m glad Raynor got his comeuppance. He was really starting to grate on my nerves.

The Meh:
* The imprisoned slave who is actually a queen who began barking orders at Clyde once set free was trite and uninspired.
* Of course a major plot element unfolds based on the cell that Clyde is thrown in.
* The whole “it’s not a boat, it’s a ship” BS has gone on long enough, Eric. Seriously, it was constant in the last book and continues in this one.
* Why the author insists to put so many roadblocks and obstacles in front of the quest to reach the City of Darkness (besides page count and series continuation) is beyond me. Would LOVE for Clyde to just say “F it, we’re going back to Glaton”. He actually did say that once too after I wrote this.

KU Review

“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis. I hate trying to define my enjoyment and describe facets of it that would appeal to someone else. It is simply not my style. But for the sake of those fishing for clues:

Character development: good
Game elements: minimal
Harem elements: none
Summary: I love these two series. And if you are this far in, so do you.

I will happily discuss the book with you on Goodreads if you are so inclined. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.

Cheers

We almost made it!

This story was a lot of fun, and as Clyde is wont to do, we meandered a bit, got into trouble, saved some good folk, and ended some baddies (after we sorta kinda accidentally set them loose and started some sorta spider apocalypse thingy... *shudder)

There is a lot of world building, and we get to know hellion a bit, turns out he's a cool dude! Can't wait to see what trouble the city of darkness brings, though I still have no idea why we want to go there, just that Lux really wants to. We'll see I guess!

Mistakes: I did find one sentence that didn't make any sense. Posted it on Goodreads.

Plot: The adventures leading up to the city of Darkness

Characters: Still really enjoy following Clyde

Clyde makes friends crazy fast so it's no surprise some of these friendships don't pan out. The author shows Clyde's character arc and development in these situations and that's cool.
PS. We love Hellion the Mimic 💜

A return to form for the most part. I found the pointless snark and back-and-forth somewhat less than in (some) earlier books and the rating reflects that I won't penalize that until it really impacts the story. I'd still like to see less. I admit that this book really rates a 4 for me, but a bump in the star rating is to encourage the author, who has been struggling.

There was less page-filling side quest pointlessness. The fact that "not wanting to be further distracted" is mentioned by the MC, it seems that message has been actioned by the author. In the after-notes he mentioned that he did some touristy stuff due to popular demand for more Vuldranni, and I didn't find it to be as overtly pointless to the main story.

This series never suffered as much as the "Good Guys" did, so the real test will be when we see Montana again. I'm one more book about him being an ineffective imbecile away from dropping that story entirely.

This is the low point of the series for me. Still enjoyable but seems to continue to avoid the main plot

Have to say that though I really love the world and many characters Ugland has written, somehow the social relationships seem to end up circling around demeaning and verbally abusing the main character and everyone around him acting out with constant temper tantrums. Not only does it make the books tough to get through, it's really hard to like almost any of the main supporting characters, even though most characters start out interesting and likeable. It feels shallow, lacking the nuance of adult social relationships, where the dynamics revolve around more than just anger and sexual attraction. Of course, some people's real life revolves around those things, but that's not a very interesting dynamic to read about. This similar issue is in both the good and bad guys series, and it really ruins them for me. It also feels pretty unlikely to me that characters like clyde and montana wouldn't stand up to the people, especially Clyde. I don't see how this kind of social interaction is necessary for the story, and it's really unpleasant and tiresome to read. I truly hope the social relationships start to get more diverse in the spectrum of feelings and dynamics, instead of narrowing into some harem of petulent women constantly nagging and behaving in a selfish and immature way, since I truly do love the series in spite of this.

This is another fast-paced, action packed, book in The Bad Guys series (not that they are actually bad). Clyde is still on his way home. In fact, he's been on his way home for long enough now that I have basically lost track of where he really is. It's not necessary information. All you have to know is that there is still a price on his head for saving a woman from a loveless marriage by sneaking her away before the wedding ceremony could be completed. And that Clyde is going to keep helping people no matter how much he really shouldn't. Oh, and there's a traitor in the group.

There is a lot of action and at least one jarring change of scenes when Clyde wakes up in prison. But mostly what we get is a low level character with some high level abilities and a functioning brain sneaking, fighting, and thinking his way out of a very large number of problems. Along the way, he makes the world a little bit better and learns that some people just refuse to be helped.

It looks like next book we will finally get to explore the mythical City of Darkness. I must admit I can't remember why everyone wants to go there, but they've finally arrived.

The adventure continues for now…

The carchedonians still want to catch Clyde and they get closer and closer until they succeed and Clyde is left beaten half to death, and in magic blocking manacles.
Before that though they learn to sail and survive in the high seas, waiting to meet some of the worst of the deeps and hoping to survive. As they try and get to the City of Darkness that Lux says she has the key too. The crew and ships change but the mission continues, first to this city and then on to his new home of Glaton and those he left behind. He just has to survive the trip, and he’s back to under level 5 again. Should be interesting

Another excellent super fun book

Okay, if you've been reading this series, you know how good it is and you don't need to read any more. If you haven't read this series then you are one lucky SOB. Go and grab all the books in the good guys and the bad guys series and enjoy. My biggest complaint is Mr ugland's slow writing pace. I can truly sympathize with writers burnout. It's not a fun time, but you know, it's time to man up and motor through it. Stop talking to your fans and just get to work. Really. :)

Outstanding

The latest book in a truly outstanding series (even a series of series) by a truly outstanding author. The books are sheer entertainment and joy, folks. I love every word in each series, especially enjoying how Clyde deals with everyone and everything as it happens (or he doesn’t, depending on the situation and available exits). Remarkable work, and very excellent editing. The characters are fascinating, the world is incredible, and I really want it all to be an anime. Heartily recommended (16+); buy them all. At least twice.

felt like a side quest

This felt like more of a filler to pass time for them to get to to the city of darkness. Some stuff happened but nothing really important not even fiends night was important apparently. Mainly banter from Clyde and a cat and mouse chase that had nothing to do with the story. No new abilities, significant changing titles, no class no new spells. His deity didn’t even visit. Just nothing. Really rather disappointing as this series is so good. Looking forward to getting back on track.

For me, the Bad Guys series has eclipsed the Good Guys series. I sympathize more with Clyde than Montana.

This book has an interesting bad guy and his fate is quite satisfying. Aside from that, I like the direction that Clyde's magic is taking... he's diving more into the intrinsic principles of magic than insta-learning from spell books.

I'd like to see more of Rose's emotional awakening, now that she's in the big bad world.

And... did we witness a fantasy Karen feed herself to cannibals? Nice.

The travels and adventures of Clyde Hatchet(t) continues unabated in this volume of The Bad Guys. As with the others, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride, twists, and pivots this story puts us through. I do miss a few of the characters that we’ve lost along the way, but Clyde does seem to collect new interesting party members quite often and they help to keep the story fresh. As usual, the narrator, Neal Hellegers, is top notch and he’s quickly become one of my favorite narrators to listen to. Up next, we finally arrive at the…City of Darkness. It only took like four books!

Worth the wait

Clyde being Clyde as only Eric can write. Elements of this story seem both immensely personal and in tide with the difficult times of the last year or so, as well as imminently fiction in a ridiculous romp. Bad guys is quickly maintaining its new status as running guy and boy is it fun. As much as montana in the good guys seems to walk head first into rafter after rafter, Clyde seems to hop from Cookpan to fire and back.

ADHD?

In the past Clyde has had poor impulse control, in this book he has no impulse control.
There's a trap that will get him and his crew, and there is no benefit to springing it, he just has to spring it.
He can't make decisions. ' How can I possibly make this decision, that I made in the last book?'
Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of fun in this book, but Clyde seems to have taken a few too many blows to the head. Tom out

I realized after reading book 9 that is slipped this one. Pretty telling that I didn't even notice. Tried to go back and read this, but I found I just don't care about the characters. That's disappointing because I do like the characters in the Good Guys.

After having similar struggles with book 10, I'm dumping the Bad Guys series entirely.

If you're on the fence or not quite enjoying this book, it's not you, and you shouldn't feel bad about giving up on this series either.

I gave the last book in this series 4 stars and while not a super strong 5 stars here this one seems to have gotten back on track so to speak and already has me looking forward to the next one. A few mild less positive observations. I find it strange that for all the MC does in this book he only progressed from level 4 to 5 but still story flow improved drastically and did not get bogged down anywhere. It was very easy to stick with this one and get it knocked out in just a few days.

Amazing book

Great book it is amazing that authors have so much skill and ability to keep writing books that are so very entertaining! Glad to hear you survived your move to the east coast hope the nor easters are not to hard on you! At least the bears here on the east side are tiny compared to those west coast grizzly monsters!

Enjoyed it

Something to say when an 8th book in a companion series is as engaging to me as this series is… it’s a fun ride. And that’s what matters.

I enjoyed the ocean adventures, the island fun, and the constant sense of adventure as they travel… Clyde’s story goes fast and strong this story.

Another fun ride from Eric

Eric is such an entertaining writer. Another great book in the series though a tease nonetheless. Better than the previous novel in the series. I gave the book 5 stars but it was more like 4.25-4.5. If you're a fan of Eric's you will respect what he's doing here.

I love this series

I really enjoy both of these series. My one and only criticism is, at least compared to the earlier entries to the book, the last few have seemed to be too short. Like that the main conflict isn't big enough and it leaves the ending feeling unfinished. I still give it 5 stars and i will continue to read every book though.

Clyde Hatchett is still not making the best discussions but is trying to. Which leads him to becoming a level-four nothing.
Still trying to get back to Glaton and now the entire nation of Carchedonia (sp?) is in-between him and home. Oh and don't forget the invisible magical city he wanted to find.
A very good read in the Bad guys series. I cant wait until the next book.
