One of the earlier works by young Francophone comics phemon Christophe Blain, this is a moody story about a group of sailors who get lost in the bowels of a massive warship. Alternately historically realistic and wildly surrealistic, THE SPEED ABATER (original title LE REDACTEUR DE VITESSE) is a dreamlike visual treat full of memorable images that doesn't fully come together as a satisfying narrative achievement.

5/5 Schiff-Zeichnungen, 1/5 Kalmar-Zeichnung.

Great stuff - wasn't sure how interesting this story about guys in the French Navy would be, but it was actually pretty awesome. Weird, with some very surreal scenes in the machinery of a giant ship, but funny at times as well. And great art - Blain's someone to watch.

This book was drawn with Blain's signature vivacity, saturation of color and tone of story telling but I found it a little less focused and harder to follow who is who and what is happening than in his other works (such as Isaac the Pirate). The story follows a young new Naval recruit, a helmsman who is immediately SO sea sick his new buddy takes him down to the machinery area, where the boat moves less. When they go down in machinery a second time an accident occurs leaving the men the options to hide or come clean about what they did. The story is exciting, don't get me wrong, but I, personally had a hard time distinguishing which character was which, even of the main characters, and felt it lacked in SOME kind of editing or clear focus. It even took me a while to decipher the fate of each of the men who were fleeing in the belly of the ship at the end. Perhaps this is due to my own lack of focus, or it being nine o'clock in the morning but....I also think it could have been drawn to make these characters more distinct and, honestly, some pages could be added to wrap the story up. I am, as always, a fan of Blain and his drawing.

This is like a textbook for comics as a storytelling medium. It's easy to imagine this as a 300-page novel, but instead it's an 80-page comic. Very cool.

Christophe Blain powerfully conveys the alienation and annihilation of the sailors to the size of the warship.
In the appendix he explains that he himself did military service in the French navy in 1991, he experienced many things firsthand. Which is great because he managed to bring this wealth of impressions and sensations into the narrative.
I highly recommend it.

Excellent character writing and impressive creation of an unusual milieu. My one complaint is that the story ends very abruptly. Still, this short graphic novel is very much worth reading.
