Another quiet day in the Fifth Sector library... That is, until a group appears out of nowhere, talking about their Sectors being attacked. Great! So there's an imminent attack heading my way. And now I'm trapped with a group of whiny supes. But I guess it's not all bad... Especially when that group includes an arrogant Fae who knows he's attractive, a possessive Shifter with a playful side, a Demon-hybrid with a soft spot... and a Fallen Angel that embodies the word sin. ** Shadows and Runes is the first book in a paranormal why choose trilogy. It contains adult themes and bad-language which some readers may find upsetting.**
Isla Davon is an Irish author who loves reading. Especially Paranormal Romance and Why Choose books. She enjoys creating stories with magic, strong female characters, and as many love interests as her mind can handle.
When she is not writing, she is spending time with her family and three Jack Russells. Or snuggling down to a good movie or Netflix binge with as much chocolate as she can eat.

2.5 stars Started out fantastic and slowly dulled. It isn't ever discussed how she will protect the library, nor do they try coming up with the plan to defend it. Most of the time is spent running around from one bickering fight to another. The whole "traitor" scene made me roll my eyes so much because everyone was acting foolish. No one was productive. The sex scenes are alright, but ill-placed.
That being said, I did like the characters and thought they had real promise. I'm really not sure where this story will go next though because we were given pretty much zero information about how Libraries work or why the Records are important. A decent first novel and because of how much potential and promise it showed, I'll probably try reading another book by this author in the future.
I’m not sure what I was expecting with this book after seeing it on Tik Tok, but this wasn’t it. I feel like it was a really big game of Clue. Who did what in which room with the candlestick.
This whole story takes place over a period of about 24 hours. After getting stuck in a library with a bunch of other library patrons and staff, Rhys happens to meet her mate amid all of these different creatures. Yet, what was with all of these other males drooling over her then? And she acted like she wanted all of them even after meeting her mate?
It seemed like Isla Davon decided to throw a whole bunch of different things at the wall just to see what would stick. Not a lot of story building or character development.
The author has created an interesting world. Rhys is the Librarian of one of the major supernatural libraries, and is supernaturally tied to the library, when the libraries are attacked a group of survivors portal to her library for safety. While trying to protect her library and them, they also need to search for a traitor, who may or may not be among them… Cole, Jace, Lucian, and Iliryic are each unique and interesting - although some of them have her jerk-ish moments. The ending had some twists that I half-suspected, but I’m hoping there were reasons…I’m definitely hooked and excited to see what happens in book 2!
I saw TikToks and loved the premise for the story, but the book fell through for me.
I would love to see the author do multiple-POV in the following books so readers can get a feel for what the MMCs are feeling and motive behind their actions. And the story needs more dialogue; all dialogue was short and limited, and didn’t convey any sense of emotion.
Also, the timing of the smut felt ill-placed.
I really want this author to succeed, but this wasn’t it for me.
3 ⭐️ 1 🌶️ quick fast paced read. Lots of action and the story was spun quickly. Not a lot of world building or background information. Characters were like able and badass, however needed more development and information with magical systems and breeds? Overall I enjoyed it, just fell short in a few aspects.
Quite a short book. Interesting concept. I would have liked more descriptions of the characters - as its a RH book, so I get a clearer idea of what each MMC looks like. I didn't like the popular culture references as it was hard to work out how these fit into the world building. I also wasn't keen on the instant mate attraction/acceptance.

Wow what an amazing fast paced, action packed book. I loved it!! The Idea that libraries are actual sanctuaries, that they have their own worlds that come with guardians and LIBRARIANS. It's a great premise. I really enjoyed the banter also.
All the love interests are drool worthy. MC is badass really liked her personality and the way her abilities were revealed. Definitely downloading the authors next books. Don’t hesitate it’s a great start to the series you won’t want to put it down.
I found myself thoroughly absorbed in this story. It's a wonderful premise, with characters I want to know better. I look forward to the rest of the story.
Loved this book and I can’t wait for the next book but where can I buy it bro 😭😭😭 I read it on release with KU but now it’s been removed and I want a physical copy. Someone help
