I went to a bookstore on Monday and saw this on the clearance aisle. I read through it while I was in the store and bought it only so that it wouldn’t end up in the hands of someone who may not recognize how harmful this ideology is.

I’m not Catholic, but I grew up in Christian purity culture and have spent majority of the last year deconstructing how harmful this teaching has been in my own life. Reading through some of these quotes hurt me because that was genuinely how I was taught to view life as a teenager. I grew up believing that purity was the only way to lead a fulfilling life, and this mindset is unhealthy at best and destructive at worst.

This “book” contains daily quotes (or “reflections,” as the author puts it) on purity. The quotes are attributed to saints, Popes, and verses from the Bible—and, for a relatable touch, quotes from the generic “high school female” and “single male.”

A lot of the content revolved around modesty, and this just takes me back to high school dress codes and the culture of shaming women for what they wear. Although there are some quotes in this book about the purity of men, a large majority is related to women and their own chastity. The first quote I saw when I opened the book was on July 16th: “Chaste women plus unchaste clothing equals instant hypocrite.”

Other modesty-related tidbits in this book included the following:

“Modesty is an unspoken invitation for the guys to be men enough to win our hearts.”
“Dress with as much respect as you wish to receive.”
“If you see a girl dressed modestly, tell her you appreciate her modesty.”
“Women who dress immodestly often complain that men are all ‘animals.’ That's because the wild ones come running while the decent men stay away.”
“Modesty, on the other hand, instead of treating men like dogs, invites them to consider an idea.”

There was one quote on November 3rd that stood out to me: “It's ironic that one minute we're saying that no guy would want a pure girl, and the next minute we're saying that no guy would want us because we're not pure.” It’s almost as if… that’s why this movement is so absurd? It is teaching women that their entire purpose is to cater to the desires of men and that their worth is solely defined by how they are viewed in this light. Purity culture as I know it has been used to control women and make us feel ashamed of who we are and what we feel, and the more I think about it the angrier I become.

Is this book something that my high school self probably would have genuinely liked? Yes, because that’s how I was conditioned to view myself and my body.

Is this book something that my adult self would ever consider sharing with anyone in my life? Never.

There are better ways to have conversations about sexual ethic with teenagers and young adults. Indoctrinating them with purity culture is not one of these ways.

This book is a great daily devotional for me to remember purity in my daily life. I went to one of Jason Evert's "Romance without Regret" talks and was really moved by it, but I soon found that the effects wore off and I started to forget why purity was important to me. These daily quotes help me to remember purity and its importance to God, myself, and my future husband. The only thing I wish it had was maybe a story or an explanation that related to each quote, so that I could get more out of it.

I bought this book because I thought it was going to be a daily devotional, but, as it turns out, it is a Catholic prayer book (and I'm not Catholic).
