First published in 2001. This is part of the Foreign Policies of Great Power series, this is Volume I of British Foreign Policy from 1878 to 1902 and focuses on the reluctant imperialists. The work was published in two parts with the dividing line being 1902.
This is a great diplomatic history of the Victorian era in Britain. The basic thesis is that Britain was overextended and did not want to be a world-straddling imperial power, but because the defense of India, which was the jewel of empire, was so precarious, Britain was forced into unwanted African and Near Eastern commitments.
