100 sätt att rädda världen...

Rate this book

Great ideas that can be implemented on all different scales from the smallest changes like not buying bottled water to the grander scale of off-setting your carbon footprint when you travel. This has been sitting on my to-read shelf for a while so some of the ideas are dated, but it was inspiring to see some of the things that could be marked off as accomplished if the author was to write an updated version!

I'm aware that I will probably sound very cynical (and possibly hypocritical) in this review, which is a shame, because to tell the truth there's enough of pessimism in the field of environmentalism already. Therefore it is nice to read a book that aspires to lift the public spirit by providing some positive tips on how to live a more green life. I do think that this book has some qualities and that it could be helpful as a sort of how-to guide, for those who feel like they don't know where to start, however having just about finished a year of sustainable development studies I personally don't find it very helpful. This is why:

1) It's all up to you. This book is an excellent example of the "it's a matter of life style"-type of approach to environmental issues. Therefore it claims that it is mainly up to you and me to do something about the current environmental issues. This isn't completely out of order, I do for example, believe that it would be great if everyone tried to consume less. Yet encouraging people to consume less won't ensure that they do so and sadly just because some do go through with it, it still doesn't make an actual impact on the problems caused by consumption in the first place. To change the behaviour of those who won't change in the first place, the sustainable choice has to become the easy choice. Therefore to challenge actual global environmental issues, the problems and solutions have to be addressed on a higher level, so that laws and legislation can be drafted to even make it possible for the individuals to make a change.

2) It doesn't bring anything new to the table. A lot of the information included in this book (I've read the original Swedish version) isn't actually new. It's all been heard before, especially if your interested in the subject, and it's basically just an extra long list that could have been attached to any kind of article about the environment. Even though I previously stated that this could be good if you're interested but haven't read so much on the subject, I do also fear that it won't convince anyone new to act accordingly to the guide.

3) It's too simple. The key to understanding environmental issues is to accept that they are always complex. Usually there are about a hundred ‘ifs' and 'buts’ and there are reasons why those scientific articles are so long in the first place. In this book, everything is extremely simplified which I personally find disturbing, because do believe that you need at least some context and a few nuances to actually understand the problems we are facing. For example, Tell encourages the reader to enjoy the delicacies of the oceans, but to do so wisely (again, this is my translation of the Swedish version) as if overfishing isn't also an actual environmental problem. The way the author has tried to make the book reader friendly, I think too much was cut in editing it, making it inaccurate on occasion.

I don't believe the recommendations in this book are of no help to someone. I do believe every step towards an ecologically sustainable life counts. But because I am concerned about environmental problems we face on a daily basis, I think the subject should be taken seriously. And to be able to do that, one has to understand the amplitude and the complexity behind these issues, not just cross something of a list and be done with it.
