aka Sharon Harlow

Bestselling author Sharon Gillenwater writes stories about love—between a man and a woman, of family and home, and the everlasting love of God and Jesus.

She grew up on a ranch in the Rolling Plains of West Texas, near the small town of Colorado City. Marriage took her across the country, but Texas is still dear to her heart. All of her Christian contemporary romances and most of her Christian historical romances are set in small West Texas towns filled with rugged, yet tenderhearted cowboys and strong, yet compassionate women.

While on a trip to England and Scotland years ago, the history and people captured her imagination. After returning home, she discovered Regency romances and another favorite time period and setting. She currently has two Christian Regency historical romances available, along with three sweet historical Regency romances.

She and her husband live in a quiet, rural area of Washington state with a wonderful view of the mountains. A friend once commented, “It’s like a writer’s retreat.” Sharon agrees and is busy dreaming up stories about Texas cowboys or English and Scottish heroes and the women who win their hearts.

I love the characters in this series! They are so real and so on fire for God. I would love to know these people in real life! Emily and Chance just warm my heart. I love how Chance pursued Emily. Sometimes, while reading a book it will annoy me because the hero won’t pursue the heroine for some reason or another, but that wasn’t the case in this book at all! I love men like Chance. Willing to stick up for their girl, protective, compassionate, hardworking… However, he is still human and has his flaws, but he was willing to listen as God was teaching him and molding him. He would also humble himself and apologize when he was wrong. Emily! I was able to connect with Emily. Some of the issues she was going through are things that I am struggling with, too. Such as relationships, restoration, and other things too.

I just really enjoyed this book and if I went on about its good qualities, it would be way too long. I’ll just say that one thing that I didn’t LOVE was how a chapter would end in the middle of a date or something, but the next scene wouldn’t pick it back up. It would go on to another day (or whatever) and then mention how the last scene ended. That only happened a few times, and it bothered me because I felt like it was a sudden cut off and the author may have missed some opportunities. But, it wasn’t a big enough deal that I didn’t like the book or anything. I just felt that it could have been even better if some scenes weren’t done that way.

The second book in a truly delightful series, The Callahans of Texas. I read and reviewed the first book, Jenna's Cowboy at the beginning of the month and loved it so much I couldn't wait to read the second story. The series follows the Callahan siblings on their quest for true love. Each book reads well as a standalone and this time it's Chance's turn -- and I totally love the clever title. The heroine's name is Emily -- Emily's Chance...get it?

This is pure Texan romance and I say that because the setting has a personality all of its own. The author shares her passion for her home state in wonderful ways from her descriptions of ranch life to the quaint phrases that kept me grinning. Like the way Chance's mom describes her son: "That boy can charm the gold out of your fillings if he wants to." (p 118) Oh, yes, he can!!!!!!! Big time!!!!

Chance is a man on a mission. Don't believe in love at first sight? You will after you've read this novel! Because "sometimes a man had to charge out of the chute to win the prize." (p. 9) Emily is the prize and Chance is one determined cowboy. Be still my heart. He's tender and gentle and funny and irresistibly persistent.

Emily isn't exactly immune, but she tries to be. Her time in Callahan Crossing is supposed to be a stepping stone onto bigger and better things. But, seriously, resistance is futile though Emily puts up a good fight. :-)

The kind of inspiring romance that puts a blissful smile on your face and keeps it there long after you've closed the book. I highly recommend the whole series.

Okay, I'm sure this has a good premise and I could almost get into it when she started talking about old furniture and stuff, but the romance part of it KILLS ME!! I hate love at first sight crap AND I just wanted to poke my eyes out with how perfect this guy is. He loves God, he knows how to do dishes, he just needs to be a little more real. I mean, my husband loves God and knows how to do dishes, but I don't know....I just couldn't even finish it. Sorry. I don't adore the bad boys of books but this guy reminded me of Mr. Collins from Pride and Prejudice and I don't think that was what the author was going for. I'll never know because I'm never going to finish it.

This is the first book by Sharon Gillenwater that I've read and I look forward to reading the next in the series. Her characters were well developed and I loved the humor between Emily and Chance. Emily was in Callahan Crossing to set up a Historical Museum. It was a step to finally getting a job in a larger reputable museum. But that was before she started to fall for Chance. She wanted to have a successful career and told herself that nothing would stop her. She is forced to choose between her career and the man she comes to love.

The storyline kept me turning the pages. I laughed, cried, and my heart warmed as Emily and Chance danced around their relationship. Emily's Chance is a wonderful inspirational sweet romance that also had moments of heartbreak and disappointment.

Soooo good!
It was a quick and smooth read, because of how good it was. And this was my second read through (1st impression was probably the same, many years ago).
The characters are likable, seem realistic, and the plot keeps you intrigued. There was some depth to the storyline, as well with the characters. Part of that might be because of how all three books connect, the author was able to continue on, sharing from a new perspective. And I love how she connected the books, carrying on from one to the next, sharing the story of each sibling, seamlessly.
This is one of those books where you stop reading, only to pray to God asking Him to send you a Godly man (&maybe even a cowboy) like Chance ;)
It was smooth as butter.

I think this was a good book for Christian readers. Emily is not the average rich girl that we all see around us. She's a bit more determined to prove her worth based on her abilities rather than her parent's bank account. Chance is a man who also comes from a rich family, so he's able to appreciate the value of hard work.

The book places more emphasis on faith over finances and family over fortune. God and family always come first. Help others in need. Do good. A lot of Christian values pop up in this story. It's well-written and Sharon Gillenwater did a fine job bringing some life into the story.

Emily’s Chance

This was a really good story about a young lady named Emily. She was a curator for museums, although she was just getting started in doing what she had trained for. She was working in a small town, working up their museum items. She met Chance Callahan, was love at first cite for him. More to come, enjoy their story.

Enjoyed this book very much. It is an exciting story of Emily as she starts working on the museum in town after a fire that took out some of the things that were in the old museum.
Over time she meets many people in town. She meets and falls in love with Chance. A delightful book to read💕😊

Emily's Chance by Sharon Gillenwater was a gift given to me by the Easter Bunny this year (thanks mom!). I think I was overdue for a cowboy romance novel. This was a good one.

Much of the town has been ravaged by fire and Emily's trying to figure out what the point in staying is. Since her purpose of vising Callahan Crossing was to help get its small museum off the ground. Chance is hoping to give her a reason to stay, perhaps permanently. He fell in love with her the moment he saw her and it would just break his heart if she left so quickly.

Chance donates a building to the historical society to use for their museum and Emily and Chance's family/friends get on the ball finding donations for the museum since much was lost in the fire. Emily finds that the more time she spends with Chance and the people he loves the more she doesn't want to leave them. Sure, her DREAM job is head curator in a large museum, but what if her dream job comes at the expense of the man she doesn't want to admit she's falling for?

Chance. ::sigh:: Christian. Gallant and chivalrous and kind and gentle and.... I could probably go on and on about him. He's a loving son and a doting uncle. He works hard and does everything he possibly can to help everyone in need. He cares fiercely for his family and is bound and determined to sweep Emily off of her feet and have her join the family.

Emily is lovely and kind and stubborn as an ox. I guess the same could be said about Chance as well... they make a great pair. She's a new-ish Christian with a somewhat questionable past and definitely questionable people as parents. She thinks her life is leading her on one specific path and refuses to believe that maybe her path can change. At first. But she grows to love Callahan Crossing and the people in it. She starts to see them as family, not just a town she's working for. This little country town is a breath of fresh air compared to the big city life she's known before, and she comes to find out that maybe she doesn't really want to go back. The fact that one of the most eligible bachelors is in love with her doesn't hurt her decision making process. But she takes her sweet time realizing she loves him back.

This was a great story. I loved the history of the town and Chance's family. I loved their strong Christian roots and the way everyone was family to them, even out of town yuppies like Emily. I loved that they were all so amazing to each other in spite of struggles that they faced and that the whole community was so close-knit. It was great to see that everyone banded together to rebuild the town after a completely devastating fire that big wigs in the city thought they'd never recover from.

Books like this make me long for small town life like that. Where everyone knows everyone and even if you're different, and sometimes nosey, you're friends. Or at least cordial and able to get along. It makes me long for the country and the fresh air and the kind of community where you have spaghetti dinners and everyone shows up. Or if you need a place to stay no one is uncomfortable offering a couch or a room for as long as you need it. It's the kind of place where you make friends when you're little and they're still friends 30-40 years down the line.

I loved this book. I'd recommend it to anyone. The Easter Bunny definitely did a good job picking this one out for me.

Emily's Chance written by Sharon Gillenwater is a great christian romance novel set in Texas. It is the second book in The Callahans of Texas series but can easily be read as a stand alone work, in fact I didn't have the opportunity to read the first book, Jenna's Cowboy ,but had no problems jumping right into this novel.

The story opens up with the small town of Callahan's Crossing recovering from a devastating wildfire. Emily Rose Denny was in Callahan Crossing hired by the historical society to set up Callahan Crossing Museum but with the damage from the fire she isn't sure that there will even be a museum. Technically she could do the job for free, she didn't need the money she had a trust fund that her grandfather had set up for her that let her live quite comfortably, but she needed the job to add to her resume.

Chance had first met Emily during the fire, and for him it was love at first sight, or second site, since first site it was hard to see her thru the smoke and fire! He was 29 years old and looking to settle down, but the thing with most women in his area they were really only interested in his money. What he wanted was what his parents and sister had, a true love that could withstand lifes ups and downs. He is sure that Emily is the one he is going to marry, now he just has to convince her of that. So when he donates a building he has just restored to use as the museum, he hopes that she will stay and continue the work she started.

I loved this story, I felt the characters were very well developed, the background that we got with Emily was truly sad, even though she came from a wealthy family her life wasn't easy, she really hasn't had anyone in her life that truly cared for her, so when she starts to have feelings for Chance, she doesn't easily let go of her five year plan of becoming a curator of a large museum, feeling this is the only way that she can gain her parents approval and respect. Chance is a true gentleman, and will do anything for those he loves. Will Emily put her fears aside and take a chance on love with Chance?

I must say that I really enjoyed the secondary stories in this book as well, particularly the history we got from Margaret Bradley's journal, about the relationship she had with Chance's grandfather.

I loved my visit to Callahan Crossing and found Emily and Chance's story a wonderful read, I can't wait to read the next book in this series Megan's Hero due to be released June 2011.

Too much of a good thing is too much of a good thing, so having said that on occasion I go off the reservation and try to diversify my reading material. Emily’s Chance is one of those breaks. This is not a tale of international intrigue or Emily saving the world from terrorists. She’s a different character for me, and I enjoyed it. A nice shifting of the gears , a breath of fresh air if you will. Okay I think you got the point, here is a synopsis of the novel; I got this from the back cover of the novel:
“Emily Rose may be in the tiny West Texas town of Callahan Crossing for the moment, but it’s just a rung on her ladder to success. Her work at the Callahan Crossing Historical Museum will look good on her ever-growing resume as she attempts to break into the prestigious world of a big city museum curator. Little does she know that cowboy and contractor Chance Callahan has decided that he can convince her to stay- both with the town and with him. As he helps Emily restore the town’s history after a devastating fire, can he help her uncover the value of love?”
Emily’s Chance is a refreshing and fulfilling novel to read. I am not a big fan of the state of Texas right now as I am a Yankees fan, but the novel put me in a good frame of mind. I like the positions the novel takes, the viewpoints, and also the messages of love, healing and redemption. The dialogue is good, the character development is right on and I got the feel I was there in Callahan Crossing. Reading about a contractor that isn’t putting the screws to a homeowner is nice, at least in fiction there is an honest contractor. I am always up for having love as a central theme, and I did fall in love with this novel. Why don’t you take the journey to Callahan Crossing and fall in love with Emily, there is a “Chance” you may really enjoy it as much as I did.

Chance Callahan knew from the minute he saw Emily Rose Denny, that she was the one for him. Even if it was in the middle of a wild fire that nearly destroyed his entire hometown. He knew she was the girl he would fall in love with and marry. Now he has to convince her of the same thing, that he is the one for her.

Emily Rose Denny has a five year plan. She has always had to succeed at everything she does. And her career is at the top of the list of areas of her life she must succeed in. She has to become a curator at a top museum, it is the only way she is convince that her parents will ever think she is a success.

Falling in love is not part of the five year plan, but maybe God has a different plan. Emily is working hard with the local Historical group to get the museum, that was ruined during the fire, back up and running. Working thru what they were able to salvage and the new donations, keeps her busy. But not so busy that she doesn't notice that Chance is pursuing her.

Will Emily give love a chance? Will she allow her five year plan to be disrupted?

This book was a wonderful continuation of the story of the Callahan family, in the first book we meet Jenna, Chance's sister, now we are meeting Chance and hearing his story. Faith is a very important matter to Chance and it is very evident in this book. I truly enjoyed this story, it is a story that reinforces that real mean do love Jesus! Great job from Sharon Gillenwater! US $14.99 338 pages 4 stars.

After first meeting the Callahans of Texas in Jenna's Cowboy, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Emily's Chance. Now, I'm impatiently waiting to see what takes place in Megan's Hero (due out 6/1/2011) -- it sounds like another touching story.

We very briefly met Emily Rose at the end of Jenna and Nate's story, when Chance helped her haul boxes out of the Callahan Crossing Historical Museum during the wildfire that destroyed so many homes and businesses. Emily's Chance picks up shortly after. The people of Callahan Crossing are still trying to clean up their town, and rebuild their lives after such devastating losses.

Chance realizes right off the bat that he's fallen head-over-heels for Emily Rose, and feels that she is God's choice for his wife -- now he just needs to be sure Emily feels the same way. He discovers that it won't be as easy as he thought, once he begins to realize she has quite a few issues from her childhood that seriously cloud her vision of her worthiness to any man.

I'm not a huge history fan, so there were a few slower parts (for me personally), but the overall story is heartwarming. I especially like how Chance is so patient with Emily, as she tries to come to terms with her insecurities, and his willingness to sacrifice things in his own life just to help her achieve her personal dreams.

It was such a pleasure to catch-up with the Callahan family again. I really enjoyed getting a peek at how Jenna and Nate's marriage is progressing, as well as, seeing Zach again. He's just the sweetest little boy ever! I also loved watching Dalton and Lindsey's tentative relationship start to grow -- they're gonna make such a cute couple. :)

Be sure to check out Sharon's website to find out more about her books -- you'll be so glad you did!

Title: EMILY’S CHANCE
Author: Sharon Gillenwater
Publisher: Revell
October 2010
ISBN: 978-0-8007-3354-4
Genre: Inspirational/contempory

Chance Callahan virtually fell in love with Emily Rose from the moment he met her. Emily was hired to organize the tiny museum the Callahan Crossing’s historical society was hoping to put together, but she’d barely started sorting through the old photos and paperwork when the town suffered a massive setback and the building they were using as the museum burned.

Chance rescued Emily from the fire, but she is certain she’s out of a job…at least until Chance offers the historical society a building he owns, free and clear, to use as a museum. Emily is thrilled—because she will have more time to get to know chance, and because this job will look good on her resume, and hopefully help her on the road to becoming a big city museum curator.

But as Emily works to restore the town’s history, will Chance be able to help her uncover the value of love?

EMILY’S CHANCE is the second book in The Callahan’s of Texas series by Ms. Gillenwater, but it easily stands alone. I did have the privilege of reading the first book, but even if I hadn’t I would have been able to follow along without problems. The title is a great play on words too. I applaud the one who thought of it!

Emily is a sweet, kind heroine, struggling to prove herself, both in a field that has few opportunities for career advancement, but also to her parents. Chance is considerate hero, willing to bend over backwards to accommodate those he cares for. I couldn’t help but cheer for these two as they try to get to know each other. If you are looking for a sweet romance set in the big state of Texas, then you won’t want to miss EMILY’S CHANCE. $14.99. 338 pages.

EMILY’S CHANCE by Sharon Gillenwater is the second installment in the Callahans of Texas series. While JENNA’S COWBOY centered on Jenna Callahan, EMILY’S CHANCE brings Chance Callahan – one of Jenna’s brother to the forefront.

As the small town of Callahan Crossing recovers from a devastating fire, Chance Callahan sets his sights and his heart on Emily Rose, the newly acquired historian hired to get the Callahan Crossing Museum up and running. After two brief encounters, Chance is convinced Emily is his future wife. Now all he has to do is prove to her that he is her man.

There is only reason Emily Rose has come to Callahan Crossing. It serves as a stepping stone to add to her list of credentials. With her goal set on becoming a curator of a prestigious museum, Callahan Crossing is merely a blip on her roadmap to success. When she meets Chance Callahan, she convinces herself he is nothing more than a friend, someone to spend time with while in Callahan Crossing. But soon, her feelings for him change and reek havoc on her heart. Knowing that being placed at a prominent museum is the only way she will gain her parents approval, she pushes her feelings for Chance aside and concentrates on her future. But, what kind of future will she have if she leaves the man of her dreams behind?

EMILY’S CHANCE was just as enjoyable as JENNA’S COWBOY. The entire Callahan family serves as a rich backdrop in both books. Just like JENNA’S COWBOY, the plot doesn’t stretch your imagination, but the warm writing of Sharon Gillenwater keeps you coming back for more. Knowing the Callahan’s have one more son – Will Callahan, I will be keeping my eyes and ears peeled for the next installment

Sharon Gillenwater has done it again. She makes the fictional town of Callahan Crossing, Texas, come alive with complex characters, rich history and of course romance. It really helped that the historian in me could very much relate to Emily Rose and her desire to help establish a museum with the Callahan Crossing Historical Society. And Chance Callahan? well if you loved Nate from Jenna's Cowboy all I can say is you will be very happy to meet up with Chance again. I'll say this, bowling never looked sooo good. While Jenna's Cowboy was a more serious romance delving into issues like PTSD Emily's Chance seemed less so. It was more about rebuilding a fire damaged town and repairing damages that ran soul deep.

I enjoy Ms. Gillenwater's writing style and the little tidbits and side romances so to speak that she puts in each book. Not only do we get to see romance unfold between Chance and Emily but Lindsey and Dalton as well! The story from the journal of Margaret Bradley featuring one of Callahan Crossing's founding fathers was also a juicy part of this story. It was a perfect example that Christian's aren't perfect and yet they can overcome the worst of indiscretions if they rely on their faith and avoid further temptations. I actually would love to read a series that featured the Callahan family when they first settled in Texas and maybe dug deeper into the story of Aidan Callahan. Until that time *wink* I'm really looking forward to reading Book 3, Megan's Hero!

In January I was introduced to the writing of author Sharon Gillenwater and had mixed feelings. Her research is incredible and I love the story, but I felt like the book Jenna's Cowboy ended in a lurch and that messed it up for me. In starting Emily's Chance I discovered that it picks up immediately from where we left off, and in the case that I would have had this book ready to read right away might have made a difference on my feelings then as I am happy to find out more about the lives of these characters that I have come to care about and be worried for in their circumstances with the aftermath of the town fire.

In this book we continue with incredible characters that are real to life and easy to love, but again we have abrupt changes and endings that kinda startle me in my reading. I think that this author and series have so much potential, but the changes from one "scene" to another were just rapid. With that said, the good elements of the story definitely outweigh the bad and I look forward to reading Megan's Hero is 2011.

Emily’s Chance is book two in The Callahans of Texas series by Sharon Gillenwater. In this story, handsome contractor Chance Callahan, has his eye on Emily Rose Denny and at 29 years of age he is ready to settle down. Chance believes that Emily is “the one”……….but he hasn’t managed to tell her yet. After a fire destroys much of the town, Emily’s job with the Callahan Crossing Museum looks like it may be over.

While Emily fears she may be forced to pack up and head back to San Antonio, Chance works with the Historical Society members to try and save the museum. Of course Chance has a vested interest in this project because if Emily leaves town, she won’t have the opportunity to fall in love with him. As Chance works at helping find a new home for the Callahan Crossing Historical Museum, his plans include convincing Emily to start over as well and begin a new life with him.

Will he be able to win Emily’s heart? You’ll have to pick up a copy of Emily's Chance and find out!

This is the second book in the Callahan's of Texas series.

It centers around Chance Callahan and the lovely lady he falls in love with at first sight. In the first book of the series we are there when Chance helps Emily save the artifacts from the historical society. When he comes back to the church after fighting the fire he sees Emily again and falls in love instantly.

This books starts about 1 week after Jenna and Nate's wedding. While Chance has fallen in love with Emily at first site he does not tell her. He does tell his mother and Will rather reluctantly but he wanted to make sure Will did not make an attempt to date Emily.

Emily has no intention of staying in Callahan Crossing - she has her eyes on being a curator of a big museum and Callahan Crossing is a stepping stone.

With two different ideas of where their life is heading can they find love and what obstacles are in their way.

After reading all three books - Chance is my favorite Callahan - okay Zach is not a choice : )
