Sewing in SoCal #5

Betsy: Miss Grumps Don’t Fall for Mr. Sunshines

Rate this book
She only has one rule she lives by. Do not, under any circumstances, fall in love with a musician.

There are a few things everyone should know about Betsy Vargas.

1. She is trilingual, fluent in Spanish, English, and sarcasm.
2. She has the voice of an angel but she would rather cut off her right hand than sing in front of other people. the reason has nothing to do with stage fright.
3. She was tricked into coming to a sewing group once upon a time. Even though she doesn't sew, she keeps going for the friendship and the mocktails.

Being a professional sound engineer, Betsy Vargas knows what she's talking about when she says musicians aren't boyfriend material. They only care about themselves and their rise on the radio charts. Even though she worked with them every day, she knows to keep her distance. Something that is harder to accomplish when she's hired to go on tour with the band, True North. Now, no matter which direction she turns, Asher North is there. The lead singer and guitarist seems to be impervious to her glares and sarcasm. Worse, he threatens to make her forget all about her number one rule. No falling for musicians.

Asher North has never heard a voice like Betsy's before. She should be sharing her gift with the world, not hiding her light under a bushel. He finds her quips and barbs adorable and sees them for what they are--her attempt to protect herself. Little does she know, he's a very patient guy, willing to wait for what he wants. And Asher has no doubts that what he wants is Betsy.

What can I say about Betsy that will encompass all this book is and why you should pick it up?
It's engaging from the beginning. A grumpy heroine and a hero determined to look on the bright side make for some genuine lol-moments and swoony declarations. Besides laughing, I highlighted phrases like crazy because they were so perfect and fit Betsy and Asher to a tee. Not to mention seeing characters from books 1-4 and getting those updates on their life we crave.
I'm not sure I can pick a favorite Sewing in SoCal gal but reading Betsy meant my expectations and made me sad there are no more books in the series. However, I have a feeling I'll be rereading these books and revisiting my faves.

well worth the wait!

I loved everything about this book! Literal LOL moments, punch to the feels moments, banter, snark, chemistry, and a hero perfectly attuned to his heroine’s needs… it’s the perfect conclusion to an excellent series. I’m sad to see it finished, but am looking forward to anything and everything Sarah Monzon puts out next!

This quirky, grumpy member of the sewing circle had to take a minute to grow on me, but in truth, I got her. I really felt for her, her fears were well established in reality, and I loved watching her grow in the story, as well as getting to see my other favorite characters. This author takes a fun story, and interweaves truths of harder nature throughout, but not in a "slam you in your face" kind of way, but more, "This is life, we all see this, let's talk." kind of way. I really enjoyed it!

This 'Sewing in SoCal' series has been fabulous, but I'll admit to being a wee bit wary of embracing Betsy's story because of the sarcastic sass and grumpy demeanour that have carried her through the first four books. Sure she's provided some wonderful comedic background but a whole book featuring Betsy's sharp wit, and more importantly, the gigantic chip on her shoulder? I wasn't so sure.

Of course, we're talking SoCal sisters and Sara Monzon here so, of course, I ordered the audible book as soon as it was available and started listening right away. And laughing. And groaning. And my eyeballs got a real workout from all the eye rolling. Snort. I couldn't help myself. Betsy. Betsy. Betsy!

Somehow Monzon makes her prickly persona charming and her rapid fire come backs, not to mention the sarcasm renting space in her brain, made this a laugh-out-loud, can't-stop-listening reading experience for me. D-e-l-i-g-h-t-f-u-l. Betsy's back story brings depth to her character and helped me understand...and be frustrated by...that smart mouth of hers.

And I absolutely love that Asher is intrigued from the first time they meet. But he's also accepting of who Betsy is and, while he doesn't understand why she reacts the way she does, he totally respects where she's at. Does he want her to open up and let her guard down? Yes, he does, but not on his timeline, he's willing to wait it out.

My heart still does a skippedy-jump when I think about Asher's patience and forbearance and the way he appreciates Betsy's special brand of snark and even revels in it. And super important: he doesn't want to change her (well, there is one thing he'd like to change but you'll have to read the book to find out what that is.) He just wants her to let him in. As a friend, and so much more. Be still my heart.

Of course, Betsy being Betsy, makes things much more complicated than they need to be but we have a SoCal Sister Intervention to thank for putting things to right. Phew! Loved catching up with Molly, Jocelyn, Nicole and Amanda (and their heroes!) again and feeding off their collective energy. I'm so sad that this series has come to an end. It's definitely one I will revisit many times in the future.

And there's so much more to this story -- Betsy's close ties to her family, the richness of her Argentinian heritage, Asher's difficult relationship with his mother, the band dynamics and the powerful faith elements that tie it all together.

I really enjoyed Stevi Incremona's performance. She sets the perfect tone for Betsy's cutting wit while exposing her vulnerable side as well. Plus, she even does a bit of singing. Exceptional performance that made me love these characters and their story all the more.

The Sewing in SoCal series is complete! Each woman has had the chance to shine in her own story. First Molly, then Jocelyn, Nicole, and Amanda. Finally, the spicy Argentine Betsy has her turn in the spotlight.

Except the spotlight is exactly what Betsy does not want. Music flows through her veins, but she wants to take a back seat as a producer and sound technician. And her #1 rule in life? Never fall for a muscian.

When Asher North stumbles into Betsy's little recording studio looking for someone to mix their sound board for his upcoming tour, he's floored by the singing he hears before Betsy realizes he's present. How could such talent hide away?

Betsy doesn't want to go with Asher's band, but the paycheck he is offering would help her family. And family is everything. Determined not to give in to the hum of attraction she feels toward Asher, Betsy dials her sarcasm up to 12 and agrees to accompany True North on tour.

I really enjoyed the sweet heat in Asher and Betsy's romance. He is determined to show her his intention with patience, building a foundation of trustworthiness. She is determined to rebuff him—except there's something about him she can't deny. Unlike the musicians she's known before, he isn't in this occupation for personal glory. She can't figure him out.

Asher's faith is beautifully portrayed within these pages. I really, really liked him as a hero. I wish Betsy's had been a little more clearly seen. That was my only small complaint in this story, but overall the faith message was really strong, which I always appreciate.

This has been a wonderful series, and I can't wait to see what's up next from this author, who provided me an early copy of this book. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Betsy lives by one major rule: Never fall for a musician. When Christian band leader, Asher North, walks into her studio looking for a sound mixer for his tour, she can’t refuse the payment that would help her family. She just needs to make sure she doesn’t give into the pull she feels towards this musician. No problem, right? Except Asher North is breaking down all her stereotypes and generalizations with his selflessness and kindness towards all those around him. And she can’t deny that he is breaking down the walls of her cynical heart.

This book was so great! I read through the whole series beforehand, so I was very much looking forward to reading Betsy’s story and it did not disappoint. It was nice to get some of her background and reasoning for her #1 rule and I loved how Asher came to break down her generalizations in such a kind, honest way. There was a lot a good growth for Betsy in this book. And the romance moved along very nicely and was satisfying and sweet. Betsy still had her snarky personality, but Asher was a great balance for her character. The whole story was well done. Good pacing. Great writing and characters. The romance was slow burn with some simmering chemistry that led to some great kisses. The Christian aspect was woven in in a realistic way that made sense for the story and wasn’t too much or too little. This was a wonderful end to the series!

If you’re looking for a sweet romance where the snarky heroine can’t help but fall for the one guy she said she’d never fall for, then pick this book up.

Thank you Sarah Monzon for the chance to read this book. All opinions are my own.

What an absolutely amazing conclusion to the Sewing in SoCal series! I’ve loved each and every book in this series, but this one might be my favorite! I’ve been so looking forward to reading Betsy’s story, I just knew she had quite a backstory behind her snarky self! I loved finally getting to know Betsy, and I ended up loving her character just as I knew I would! Asher is such an amazing and swoon-worthy hero, he is the perfect sunshine to Betsy’s grumpy and I absolutely adored him!
I absolutely loved every minute of this story, but I was sad to say goodbye to the Sewing in SoCal ladies who have come to feel like friends to me! I hope Sarah Monzon gives Betsy’s sister Bella her own story at some point, I’d love to read it!
I most highly recommend this delightful romcom! Loved, loved, LOVED it! Each book in the series stands alone, but I’d suggest starting at the beginning with Molly, because you won’t want to miss a moment of the awesomeness that is this series!
I listened to this one in audiobook and Stevi Incremona’s narration was absolutely phenomenal!

Betsy is sure to keep you on your toes! Her snarky comments and her larger than life personality are sure to keep you coming back for more.
I enjoyed getting to know Betsy and uncover the reason she hides behind a self-made wall of sarcasm. Behind all her bluster is a soft heart of gold.
It was also fun being reunited with the other ladies in the Sewing in SoCall group and getting caught up with their lives as well.
Be sure to grab yourself a copy of this fun story and clear some time on your schedule, because trust me you won’t want to put it down once you get started.

I Love Betsy!!!!! She's my absolute favorite! She's snarky, spunky and quirky; all the things I love in a heroine.

Her determination to not fall for a musician made her antics around Asher so much fun and made me scream "just like him already!"

I giggled and swooned while reading this book! This is a perfect summer read and if you haven't read the other's then grab the set toss them in your beach bag because this is the last book in the series so it's complete and you won't have to wait for the next one.

Months ago, I read the first four Sewing in SoCal books back-to-back and have patiently been waiting for this one ever since.

Betsy is the queen of sarcasm with a streak of family loyalty a mile wide. She seems tough, but she’s actually a soft hearted gal afraid of being hurt. Her story was one of my favourites in the series.

Asher was sweet but almost a touch too perfect. I loved his relationship with his brother Aaron, and his mother infuriated me.

Personally, I found Betsy and Asher’s relationship to develop pretty quickly, and there were a few things I felt could have used more fleshing out/screen time.

All in all, a sweet, fun rom-com series, and I was glad to see all the girls get their HEA!

Content: mild innuendo; physical attraction; kissing; mention of a teen girl having a baby outside of wedlock; pop culture references

Betsy just might be my favorite out of the bunch, even though I’ve basically thought that of all of them!! I think it’s her wit and her grumpiness, and her ridiculous rules about dating a musician. When you find out the why behind that, I totally get it. But let’s face it - it was destiny that she would end up helping out a band with their sound.

And Asher? Well I’ll listen to him sing anytime - I mean I didn’t totally picture in my head or anything. Asher and Betsy were perfect for each other. Totally butting heads - more so Betsy wanting to do the opposite of anything Asher declared. But the chemistry was off the charts. Well the pages anyways.

This series has been such a delight to read and I loved the updates we got in this installment (sorry no spoilers). Do yourself a favor and read all the books in order. You’ll be thanking me later!

Oh my goodness! I think this was easily my favorite book of the series. I just simply devoured this book about grumpy Betsy and sunshiny Asher. Sarah Monzon has such a casual writing style that really pulls you in and makes for easy yet entertaining reading. She is also a champion of opening lines in my opinion.

Betsy has one important rule, no dating musicians. And she has her reasons which she personally feels are perfectly legitimate. She intends to stick to that rule when Asher asks her to join his band on tour as a sound engineer. But what is she supposed to do when Asher ends up not being anything like what she expects from musicians, who she normally places in small, negative filled boxes? Is it all a ploy? Can she break her rule?

I highly, highly recommend this book. I don't often read a book in just one day but I read Betsy in just one day because I couldn't put it down. You can read this as a standalone but the other books give you background for Betsy as well as the love stories of Betsy's friends. They're all also very good books. I had been dying to read Betsy after binge reading the rest of the series. You won't regret doing the same. I love Asher's dedication to winning over Betsy and the growth journey Betsy has to undertake as she questions her cynicism.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I'm leaving an honest and voluntary review.

4.7 ⭐️

When I first learned what type of bad True North was I automatically had doubts about this book, I thought for sure it would be a little preachy. I'm so glad I stuck with it though because it turns out I was way wrong.

I absolutely loved Asher and everything he stood for. He was such a bright light and heart warming character. He was by far my favorite in the book. Betsy was easily loveable as well, with her tough exterior and loyal heart. I really enjoyed how it all came together in the end.

My only concern was the amount of characters introduced at once. It took me a good minute to set her friend group and family straight. I'm not sure about romcom but this was an adorable closed-door romance with a great gender reversed grumpy/sunshine twist. It had just the right amount of sarcasm, slow burn, and jesus to keep you entertained and wanting more.

Sigh

I loved this book. Betsy and Asher were a magic combination. Seriously, I've read all the other books in the series and always thought Betsy was snarky and sarcastic...I never thought I'd love her character this much...but I think she's on of my favorites.

The gist of the book…

Past mistakes have led Betsy to set a strict rule of never dating a musician. Experience has taught her that musicians are self-centered and egotistical. That is until a attractive worship band leader, Asher North, makes a very generous offer in return for Betsy joining the band on tour. Asher appears to be an exception to her stereotypes, but is it all just an act?

What I loved…
🖤The diversity represented in this book and other books in this series.
🖤The different perspectives we get from the 5 girls in this story. There is great beauty in a group of friends who love each other as they are!
🖤There is something real about Sarah Monzon’s books that I can’t put my finger on. They have a different feel than a lot of rom coms, but I really enjoy her writing.
🖤 I loved Betsy’s witty character and swooned over Asher’s cinnamon roll sweetness!
🖤 There were several fun moments that made me smile (I’m a Little Tea Pot and Frogger on the interstate).

Things to note…
🖤This is the final book of a Christian Romance series. I’ve read (and enjoyed) 3/5 of the books. This particular book is heavier on the religious themes than the other books. While I love Jesus, this isn’t always my favorite genre. However, I think Sarah Monzon does a great job incorporating faith in a genuine way. It is a super sweet, clean, closed door romance.
🖤Occasionally, I skipped past some of the minor details to get to the next part of the story. This is partially because I was really into the plot, but also because I have ADD mom brain.

Jacilyn and Amanda’s stories are on my TBR list for sure! I received an advanced copy of this book from the author, but all opinions are my own.

Love this group of friends and their humor. So fun to read Betsy's story! "I have one rule and one rule only: I do not, under any circumstances and with zero exceptions, date musicians." Betsy is a hoot, and Asher is a sweet man. Her sarcasm does not affect him, in fact it has the opposite effect. He rather finds it endearing. "Betsy did intimidate me. Although, maybe not in the way she meant to. The number of times I caught myself thinking of her was a bit frightening. But in a thrilling sort of way. All of her hard edges that she'd sharpened to keep people out made me even more interested in finding the soft center she tried so hard to protect."

I got such a kick out of Betsy when she was bunking with a pregnant singer and couldn't stand her snoring. "I had boundaries, and contemplating homicide on a sweet pregnant lady crossed those."

"The verse in Matthew about hiding one's light under a bushel came to mind. Her voice had the potential to be a lighthouse to someone in a dark storm, yet she refused to shine."

I loved Betsy! It was great to have the other gals from the Sewing in SoCal series make appearances too. I have so enjoyed following the lives of Molly, Jocelyn, Nicole, Amanda, and Betsy! I am not ready to be done with this series. I am hoping Author Sarah Monzon will consider a novella to catch up with all of these friends!

I highly recommend each one of the books in this series. The humor, the friendship, the lessons learned make for such enjoyable reading. I always knew when each book came out, I was in for a treat!

Thank you to the author for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.

The girls are back and in full swing. The “Sewing Sisters” are back! This time it’s Betsy’s turn to shine, she’s the last to get a story, but oh, what a story!
Betsy has always been the one who is snarky and sassy—not wanting to do anything with guys and all the lovey-dovey stuff. Give her music and she’s in heaven. However, she has a rule for her life, and she does not want to break it. Can she stand the tests that are coming at her?
We’ll see!
I think I love the whole group of “sewing” friends! These ladies all have great personalities and quirkiness! They support each other and are there for each other. What a wonderful group of friends to have.
This story has us looking at what the past can do to influence our opinion of others and keep us from really getting to know someone’s true self. In this book, there’s drama, humor, and tender moments of romance. As well as lots of snarky banter and comments. I love Betsy’s thoughts. She doesn’t seem to hold anything in.
Sarah Monzon is a very skilled author. She has given us a wonderfully entertaining book to read. She brings such a fresh spin on writing. Each of her books holds lessons we can all learn. I genuinely enjoy reading anything this author writes.
I highly recommend picking up this book, it’s fun and delightful!

This book was amazing. It's my first from Sarah Monzon & definitely won't be my last.

First of all: Asher 😍 He's a man of God, with pure intentions, unwavering faith and smart. He is thoughtful, kind, and never loses the important focus of life: To give the Glory to God in everything we do & remember God loves us.

I loved that he raised to every challenge Betsy gave him, and always chose love & kindness to be his main response to everything. He was not afraid to show his attraction to her.

Betsy was a complex character. I loved her sarcasm and witt & brilliance. But she was also so stubborn and fierce. I did not like how judgemental she was, but that made me think... how many times haven't we been Betsy? This book just challenged me too, to look deeper.

I loved this couple, their chemistry🔥 the tension, sparks an those kisses were amazing. Also, the friendships and deep bonds between the girls were heartwarming 💞.

I loved how us latins were represented with the traditions and culture! My heart felt spoken to, familiar and just warm. The fun, the banter, but also the struggles faced with exclusion and generalization.

The grand gesture spoke to my heart💛. Words are nothing without actions that go with what you preach.

This book is a 100% recommend.

Thank you so much to the author for sending me this ARC. Betsy releases today!🥳

As a professional sound engineer, Betsy is around musicians every day, so she knows that they aren't boyfriend material. They're only looking out for themselves. Rule #1 Never Fall For A Musician. Rule #2 There are no exceptions to rule #1. Enter Asher North, lead singer of the band True North and her new boss 👀

Betsy was trilingual, fluent in English, Spanish and Sarcasm 😂🙌🏾 I loved her feisty nature and snark. She wasn't opposed to scaring off anyone that could potentially get on her bad side.

Asher was unfazed despite this. He seemed to enjoy her attempts at shielding herself from falling for him. Even when she was a stubborn grump, he was patient with her, wanting her to figure it all out first. The typical reactions you'd expect from a guy were unseen as he trumped all of Betsy's assumptions about him.

Being part of a worship team myself, I loved the inclusion of their band dynamic in the book. The faith aspect was beautifully written. The sisterhood between Betsy and her four friends was great.

This was a grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, slow burn romance. Also my first book by Sarah Monzon, though the fifth and last book in the series but can be read as a standalone. I enjoyed it 🥰

Betsy is the fifth (and final!) book in the Sewing in SoCal series by Sarah Monzon. While each book can be read as a stand-alone novel, I recommend reading them in order as the friends are in each book and the timeline continues to build. Otherwise, you will get minor spoilers from the earlier books.

Betsy has been full of snark since the very first book. She has a ginormous chip on her shoulder so it was fascinating to get her story and finally understand more about where she is coming from.

Betsy has reasons for avoiding a relationship with a musician and has no plans to date one, hang out with one, or do anything else despite her work in the music industry. While she has her reasons, I felt like it was a stretch. One musician acting like a complete jerk does not mean all musicians are that way. Regardless, I am glad that was not the main focal point of the story.

Enter Asher North. He makes Betsy a financial offer she cannot refuse. Next thing you know she's on the tour bus, surrounded by Asher and the other musicians. Asher makes her nervous because he sees her.

If anyone can smooth out Betsy's rough edges, it's Asher. They make a good team. Betsy is snarky without being mean and Asher just finds her cute. They are well-written and I enjoyed the story (and series!).

Throughout the Sewing in SoCal series, Betsy was the member of this group of friends I felt the least connected to, but also knew there was a story behind her sarcasm and standoffish-ness. Well, in the series finale, we get Betsy’s full story.

An event in Betsy’s past that changed the dynamic of her family still haunts her, and because of that, she lives by a strict rule. But you know what they say about good intentions, and when Asher North enters the picture, he challenges everything Betsy believes about musicians.

I appreciated how Asher’s heart was in the right place with his music, how he looked out for the members of his band, and how he didn’t let his mother’s attitude deter him from pursuing his dreams of music.

Betsy allowed me to catch up with the other four friends as well as delve into the hurts the main character carried. It is a delightful end to the series.

"Betsy seemed like a handful that didn't appreciate any attempt at being handled."

Betsy is crabby. In the other books in the "Sewing in SoCal" series, this means that she is an abrasive character and not always very likable. But in this book, the reader finally discovers why she tends to be prickly. By the end, she brought me over to her side. To my surprise, I ended up liking her. I have to give a nod to the author - it was definitely smart planning to feature her story first. That way readers could come to appreciate her.

Snark is definitely present in this book. If you appreciate sarcasm, you will like Betsy. There are definitely many funny moments But she is also highly protective of her family. I really appreciated that angle as well.

This is a book about making music. A band is at the forefront of the plot. How can we use our talents to glorify God? I really liked the main character, Asher. One of the fun parts was when Betsy starts to investigate who he really is as a person. I do think in relationships that people need to stand up under scrutiny. Asher definitely did.

The books in this series are definitely connected. Please read them in order to fully appreciate the characters. Throughout the series, the author did a wonderful job of weaving everything together. Well done!

I always appreciate a well-quipped sarcastic response, so I couldn’t wait to read Betsy’s story. And really, every group of friends needs a Betsy in their circle. It was fun to see her prickly personality at first clash with Asher’s calm and steady vibes, then eventually soften under his patience. What a great conclusion to this fun rom-com series. I’m sorry to see it end. (Thankfully I realized I haven’t read a few of the other girls’ stories, so I’ll be jumping back to enjoy those next.)

Really well written. Maybe the best of the series? It's been a while since I've read the others, but this one was impressive. Maybe because I also had it in audiobook format and I switched between the two, and the narrator did an amazing job. So impressive. She even sang. And harmonized with herself at one point.

Betsy doesn’t date musicians. No exception. But when a charismatic musician offers an opportunity to make enough money to bring her cousin to America, she has no choice but to accept the offer. Will she be able to keep herself from catching feelings?

The beginning was a little slow for me, but I liked the middle and end. The last chapter was perfection. It has Christian themes through out. They aren’t pushy and they flow naturally with the story. Betsy isn’t a character that I related to at first which made the book hard to read at times, but towards the middle of the book I started to understand why she was so guarded. Asher was great always though. He’s kind and patient and genuinely good. I enjoyed the authors use of music knowledge and also exploring topics of immigration. Overall, a good read I would recommend.

the perfect conclusion to an amazing series

I’ve been dying to read Betsy’s story for months now, ever since I started reading the Sewing in SoCal series last year. I binged it the second it came out on kindle, and I’m obsessed. I’ve loved every story in the series, but Betsy has always been my favourite character. Betsy and Asher’s story was absolutely perfect and I wouldn’t change a thing!

Fast-paced, flirty, and fun! This was one of my favourites from the 5-book series. The collection ends on a high “note”. I highly recommend it.
