I picked this up in a charity shop and it was a delightful find. I always like to carry something to read and in these distracting times I find poetry best as it is always god to return too. It was a lovely perusal through some very familiar pieces, many not read since school or university. Now a published poet, it was interesting to re read from the perspective of a creator and be aware of influences. A good little source book to have in the library and useful index of suggesting poems by theme or occasion.
A lot of poems where nice. The long ones bored me so I had to skip.
Favorites: *Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare *Sonnet 116 by William Shakespeare *When you are old by W.B. Yeats *He wishes for the cloths of heaven by W.B Yeats *How do I love thee? by Elizabeth Barrett Browning *The Walrus and the Carpenter by Lewis Carroll *A psalm of life by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow *Auguries of innocence by William Blake *If by Rudyard Kipling
I liked a lot of the poems. Some poems I didn’t understand completely because of the old spelling and some were just too long for my taste so I skipped those.
But I feel like this is one of those poetry books/collections I will read again and try to understand all of the poems better.
I like to call this book a waste of my time. Though there were some good poems most were dreadfully boring and i had to skip some due to them all having the same themes of seas and boats and it just got boring. Some weren’t even good. I don’t know i just didn’t enjoy it I wouldn’t recommend this to my friends, there are better collected poetry series better.
This is a very well compiled anthology of poetry that explores sorrow, regret, laughter, loss, love, joy, community, nature, art, the transcendent, and human connection. I like the diverse range of poets such as W. B. Yeats, Oscar Wilde, Christina Rossetti, Emily Dickinson, G.K.Chesterton, Robert Burns, T.S.Eliot, Shakespeare, and others.
I love poetry and did enjoy these but don't really have a fondness particularly for the long ones. There are 3 of my favourites included, "Albert and the Lion", "The Owl and the Pussycat" and "The Jumblies."
