I won this anthology in an online blog-sponsored contest. I would not have purchased it, because I was not a reader of romance novels. Was - as in past tense!

I read the Mammoth Book of Scottish Romance on a long train ride through Italy and really enjoyed it. The stories ranged from sweet to smoking hot.

There were three I particularly enjoyed:

After the Gloaming by Leah Marie Brown is the story of a super sexy American and a doomed-to-loom Scottish banshee. It sounds like a far-fetched sotry but this one really got to me. It is tender and hot. My favorite read of the anthology.

Curse Me Wicked by Elle Jasper is the story about a team of paranormal troubleshooters. One of its members gets intimately involved in a curse she's supposed to help break. I guess I am a sucker for stories about cursed souls.

Forever Night by Jackie Ivie is a story about a young man who breaks into a dungeon to rescue his captive brother but who ends up taking the captor's daughter as his hostage. It is a fun story with enough heat to warm up those cold scottish nights.

I was never a romance junkie until I read this anthology. After finishing it, I ordered Silence in the Mist by Leah Marie Brown (a gritty, heart-breaking, thrilling read), The Dark Ink Chronicles by Elle Jasper (dark and lusty), and two of Jackie Ivie's novels (starting the first one tonight. Can't wait!) Looks like I am a convert!

I actually really love these gigantic anthologies, and I am a sucker for medieval Highlanders, so there was plenty of reading here to keep me out of mischief for a good long time. Since I read out of order, I was surprised to find that the authors I was familiar with - and read first - were not my favorites of the collection. Oh and since I tend to read on the more contemporary side of romance, it was odd to read about so many 'first times' for the heroines.

My Favorite:
---------------
Highland Heart by Heather McCollum ~*~ this was also the first one in the anthology but I read it about half way through ~*~ this story was everything you'd want from a medieval highlander romance.

The ones I liked:
--------------------
Wolfish in Sheeps Clothing by Marta Acosta ~*~ Jenna's ready to curse her friends 'Sight' - when it looks like a long lonely trip to Scotland is not going to bring her the kilted love of her life but a broken heart instead.-

Magick in the Mist by Debbie Mazzuca Alessandro ~*~ When the woman in her family hold a heart shaped stone, their true love will be the first man they see in the moonlight ~*~ the woman is way too patient, but I liked this one anyway – the idea was sweet

Forever Night by Jackie Ivie ~*~ Breaking into a dungeon to rescue his captive brother, a laird instead ends up taking the captor's daughter for his own hostage ~*~ I thought this one was fun, especially how the Laird's plan go so wrong.

Kissinggate Magic by Annette Blair ~*~ Returning to the town she left in shame, a woman must confront her former lover in order to help raise her dead daughter's child ~*~ I liked the way that three broken hearts end up mended by the story's end

The Reiver by Jackie Barbosa ~*~ The laird hesitates to punish a thief who turns out to be a young woman ~*~ The thief was a wily adversary, so this was fun

The Laird's French Bride by Connie Brockway ~*~ The Laird of a modest estate seeks to improve his station by taking a bride favored by the King ~*~ I liked the clever bride to be and how the groom makes her squirm when she tries a deception but gets caught in her own trap.

The Laird's Vow by Anne Grace ~*~ In order to take his place as laird before his trustee uncle bankrupts the clan buying fripperies, Cameron vows to marry the first woman he meets – and he always keeps his vows ~*~ this one was just really cute

These were ok:
-------------------
At Last by Jaquie D'Alessandro ~*~ A woman flees her summer affair, and gets a real surprise when her 'poor, untitled lover' turns up for the Season ~*~ I just am not a fan of 'big misunderstandings' as a plot device.

Beloved Beast Lois Greiman ~*~ A thief and a man who has vowed to leave a life of violence behind make an unlikely pair

Forever Mine by Donna Grant ~*~ A disposed laird finally has the enemy responsible for his families death trapped in an ambush but gives up his sure victory when the villain takes a hostage

Next Time by Donna Kaufmann ~*~ A dying woman takes a trip to Scotland and sees a 'ghost' in ruined tower. He's not suppose to interact with others but since her time is limited, he'll take the chance ~*~ this was one of the few not set in the past, but the ending was a bit too 'Bill and Ted' for me.

Curse Me Wicked by Elle Jasper ~*~ A newbie on a team of paranormal troubleshooters gets intimately involved in a curse she's supposed to help break ~*~ This was a contemporary and the only first person point of view story in the book. It really belonged in the Mammoth Book of Werewolf Romance (a girl can hope:) and it was just too short to do the author's idea justice.

The Rebel by Julianne Maclean ~*~ After winning a battle against English forces, a Scottish laird is forced to wound a young enemy soldier who just won't quit,an surprised to find that the wounded lad is actually a woman

Kidnapping the Laird by Terri Brisbin ~*~ Can a laird and his wife overcome a bad beginning to an arraigned marriage ~*~ It is pretty hard to forgive the husband in this one.

I thought these were pretty good
-----------------------------------------
I pretty much had the same comment for all of these, I liked elements in all of these stories, but the short format short changed the stories in either setup, transition or resolution :

The Pagan Bride By Patricia Grasso ~*~ Wed when she was a mere child, a woman's husband finally calls her to join him to navigate the shark infested waters of the Scottish Court ~*~ This was less interesting for the romance, but I enjoyed the woman's quick wit and sassy tongue.

Her MacKinnon by Sandy Blair ~*~ An accident has left a woman's husband a new man, and a spirit from the past gives her hope for the future ~*~ There is the heart of a good story here, and I liked the ending

The Curse of Wolf Crag by Susan Sizemore ~*~ Fate brings back to a woman the man who tried to escape their destiny ~*~ This is one of the few paranormal stories

His Magic Touch by Kimberly Killion ~*~ A murderous husband is thwarted by a bit of magic, but not for long ~*~ this one was just too short to deliver on the romance, even though I like the idea of the now grown man who loved her as a boy finally getting his chance for a HEA.

After the Gloaming by Leah Marie Brown ~*~ Not only is she betrayed by the man she loves, but she ends up cursed to become the Banshee who walks unseen over the years, only heard when she becries the deaths of those of his line, until a young man comes to visit his dying father. ~*~

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!! Mmm, a few good stories, but anyone familar with me will know that if there is one thing I cannot stand, it's cheating. Unfortunately, this anthology had an alarming number of stories where the man cheats, or at least sleeps with other women. The one I hated the most? The Wolf Crag one. Nice. He goes to the mainland, she follows, he sleeps around the country, she finds him in bed with not one, but TWO women, he LAUGHS AT HER, she leaves, they meet again, she takes him back. No gorram way! I wanted to smack some sense into her so badly my hand ached! And then there's one where they get married, she's a cold fish, he goes to another woman (that right there made me hate him, I don't care what time period you live in, you do not cheat on your spouse) she gets jealous and "kidnaps" him to try to get him to come back to her. Lame. And there were stories that kinda creeped me out, like the one where she lies about who the father of her baby was to protect him, so he goes off and marries her sister, who I guess pretended to be pregnant and the mother of the girl stole her baby and gave it to the sister who married the father of the baby. Wow, and if that made any sense at all to you then kudos. This is why I am not an author. Oooh, and the Pagan Bride one. That made no sense to me whatsoever for reasons that gave me pause in most of the other stories as well. Their "lurve" just didn't feel real at all. It was just lust that was masquerading as love. I will admit to being in lust a few times and confusing it with love, but then I'm not even 20. These are fully grown women who should know better. And there were a disappointing number of editing errors, typos, misspellings, using "reigns" instead of "reins." Thoroughly irritating. If they had hired me to edit that book there wouldn't have been any problems. Their loss.

Okay so I have decided I really do not like these kinds of books. They get you involved in characters and before they can give you a good story, it ends. I know that is the point of short stories but it seems I am just not a short story kind of person. It took me like 4 months to get through this. That being said, there were quite a few good stories in this book. Most of them towards the end. The good thing is now I know a few more authors to look into.

Bought this mainly because Anne Gracie has a story in it. I'll add ratings for the stories as I read them, in descending order of enjoyment.

Sandy Blair's "Her MacKinnon" - the soul of a laird murdered 500 years ago re-enters his drunken slob descendant's body in a car accident. Perfection. 5 stars.

Connie Brockway's "The Laird's French Bride" - a young girl arrives from France, where she has grown up, to check out her fiance, who she hasn't yet met in person, in Scotland. Excellent story, well-realized characters. And there's a dog in the story! 4.5 stars.

Jackie Barbosa's "The Reiver" - a reiver (thief) is captured while raiding laird Maxwell's cattle and turns out to be a girl. Lovely story. 4 stars.

Anne Gracie's "The Laird's Vow" - a laird has to marry real fast to keep his uncle from squandering his inheritance, so he vows to marry the first single woman he sees, who happens to be a bedraggled shepherd he literally drags out of a bog. The wedding section was very similar to the wedding section in "The Perfect Stranger" (i.e. a recycled version of that section but I guess that's OK since Gracie wrote the original one). Nice. 3.5 stars.

Marta Acosta's "Wolfish in Sheep's Clothing" - contemporary - an "American" woman (who uses anglicisms like "lotto" and "jumper"?) is traveling in Scotland and meets a perfect-10 Scotsman who just happens to be unattached. As if. But a fun read nevertheless. 3.5 stars.

Julianne Maclean's "The Rebel" - a girl disguises herself as an English soldier in a battle with Scottish highlanders and is captured by one. Quite nice - 3 stars.

Terri Brisbin's "Kidnapping the Laird" - a woman kidnaps her husband to convince him to change his philandering ways. Silly but kind of cute. 3 stars.

Jacquie D'Alessandro's "At Last" - a grieving widow has a summer fling in Scotland with a much younger man, neither of them revealing their true identity. Great setup, but too much drama for the short format. 2.5 stars.

Susan Sizemore's "The Curse of Wolf Crag" - a woman returns fom Glasgow to her native island to marry a werewolf. Cute, but the Greek and Celtic and Nordic mythological elements are something of a hodge-podge. 2.5 stars.

Kimberley Killion's "His Magick Touch" - a woman is shoved over the edge of a cliff by her husband and is rescued by a man who has loved her since childhood. Intense, interesting atmosphere, but violent and weird (lots of paranormal stuff, which I'm not into). 2 stars.

Leah Marie Brown's "After the Gloaming" - a woman spurned and accidentally killed by her lover is cursed to be a banshee for almost 500 years until she finds someone who loves her. Weird mix of contemporary love story and Scottish ghost story that doesn't work that well, even though it has a lovely deerhound. 2 stars.

Heather McCollum's "Highland Heart" - ai, ai, ai - just a long list of "Scottish romance" cliches strung together. Totally over the top - 1 star.

Jackie Ivie's "Forever Knight" - could not finish because it was impossible to understand - 1 star.

Annette Blair's "Kissingate Magic" - completely incoherent - 1 star.

After really enjoying the Mammoth Book of Regency Romance and finding several new authors in that sampling, I decided to try this Mammoth Book. While there were glimmers of good stuff in this one, I did not enjoy it quite as much.

I found Melindeeloo's review to be the most helpful in selecting what I wanted to read. I elected to read 7 of the historical stories and one time travel story in this installment. My reviews are below.

HIGHLAND HEART Heather McCollum I read three pages and DNF. There was weird phrasing, dialogue that sounded decidedly modern, and the misuse of the word askance. It pulled me out of the story and I didn't want to continue.

AT LAST Jacquie D’Alessandro I read this some time ago and found it average so I did not read it again. Here is my review

MAGICK IN THE MIST Debbie Mazzuca This story had a hint of paranormal, with a mysterious stone that united lovers. I liked the fairytale like idea and the crazy side romance with two grandparents, but the central romance was disjointed and I didn't understand how the heroine became enmeshed in the hero's life or how he fell for her. This probably would have been better as a longer story.

THE LAIRD’S VOW Anne Gracie This story about a laird who weds the first woman he sees in order to save his lands from a spendthrift uncle was wildly unrealistic, but the storytelling was charming. I enjoyed the wedding and the unconventional Cinderella undertone. In such a short format, there wasn't much depth (nor did it deal with any difficulties bound to emerge after the wedding), but it was sweet while it lasted.

THE LAIRD’S FRENCH BRIDE Connie Brockway This was one of my favorites of the bunch. The story opens with a man making plans to woo the heiress that will save him. I like the twist where she tries to turn the tables and he plays along. It was short but playful and fun.

HER MACKINNON Sandy Blair This was my other favorite from this collection. This was the only non-historical that I read. It is a time travel romance where the soul of an ancient laird enters the body of a deadbeat descendant after a car accident and falls in love. It's a lovely second chance romance.

KIDNAPPING THE LAIRD Terri Brisbin I really didn't like the husband in this story. After a disastrous wedding night, the husband has other lovers until his wife kidnaps him for them to reconnect. Not my thing. Just...PROBLEMS.

FOREVER MINE Donna Grant This short story had quite an epic scale for its short format. I loved the charisma of the hero, but this story had a bad case of insta-love and an all powerful "bad guy" whose rise to influence I never understood. Despite this, I went along with it and found it an easy read that was enjoyable.

Oh my gosh. I loved this collection! It had everything in it that I kind of love in the world – romance, Scotsmen and passion. I normally read short story collections because they are easy to put down… that wasn’t the case with this one. It was almost impossible to walk away from it and I now want to find other Scottish-inspired romances that give this same intensity of beautiful feelings.

Whilst the majority of the stories in this collection can be classified as historical romance, there are a sprinkling of contemporary romances scattered throughout. I did buy this collection with the intent of reading historical romances, but it’s kind of nice to have a hint of something a little more modern. It provides a great ability to change the pace of the stories and gives a little more variety.

I’ve read a few Mammoth Books now, and I love the variety of stories they provide under the same umbrella. These collections also run the gambit for story length – the tales in this collection are slightly longer than some other collections and I kind of loved that fact. It meant that I connected to the characters on a deeper level because I got to spend more time with them. And it made my heart skip a beat all the more quickly.

20 stories of Scottish romance are included in this book. The book had stories from all different times from past to present. Some of the stories I would reread others were good, but I would say they ranged from 3 stars to 5 stars. Were any horrible, no. A very minor few wish were longer but most had enough for the story to feel complete. Will keep this book on my keeper shelf as would read again.

I honestly don't know what made me buy this book; perhaps it was the incredible price I paid for it (bought it at Dollar Tree and picked up a copy for my best friend) for if it had been any more expensive I'm definitely sure that I wouldn't have bothered. But I was curious so I picked it up.

I'm not into historical/fantasy/Scottish romance books at all, and although it only took me about a month to finish this, it seemed like it took forever. Yes, the stories are short and sometimes painfully so, but therein lies the problem. The ones that I really liked (and there aren't many) were sorely lacking in enough details to make me care about the characters. For example; Boy meets girl, either on purpose or on accident, they fall in love by page 10 and at the end of the story-five pages later they're engaged? That's not a spoiler for any one of these stories in particular; that's a general representation of them. However, I have posted reviews of some of the stories under the stories themselves on Goodreads, so I will share them with you here.

HIGHLAND HEART-Since this was my first time reading this genre, it took a while for me to get into it. I wasn't buying the fact that Rachel has magic powers and it seemed kind of out of place in the story. But after a while Rachel and Alec started to remind me of Belle and Adam in Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" and I mean that in a good way! As I said it took a while, but this turned out to be a very romantic story and I found myself swooning a few times. The "battle" scenes are a bit graphic but once you get past that, “it’s a quick and enjoyable read!

THE PAGAN BRIDE- This had the potential of being a swoon-worthy romance and while it was very romantic and very sexy in some parts, there were several places that felt like plot holes ; things that happened without explanation. I did enjoy the humor and the relationship between Avril and Magnus but I wish there had been more explanation about how their marriage came to be. However the biggest reward in reading this was in the final moments. If only the whole story lived up to the conclusion.

WOLFISH IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING- This started out promising but it quickly turned confusing and it seemed out of place with it being a modern day Scottish tale. It was almost like a fairy tale the way the characters fell in love so quickly but it also had a bit of mystery to it; a mystery that still confuses me. However, I wasn't invested enough in the characters to really care.

FOREVER KNIGHT-Not really impressed by this one. Hard to follow and it was too quick to become a steamy story with little plot. A little steam is nice, but it's also nice when the relationship that goes with it is believable, which this one was not.

AT LAST- I really liked this story of a couple reunited after a rocky breakup. Unlike a lot of historical stories that I have read lately, this one was much easier to follow and understand. The outcome is pretty predictable but it held my attention nonetheless.

THE REBEL-This is a really short but sweet story with a surprising twist. It's not often I read about a fierce battle between a man and a very brave woman so it was a nice change. The romantic aspects were nice but felt a bit rushed.

BELOVED BEAST-Not impressed at all with this weird and confusing story.

HIS MAGIK TOUCH-This was an okay story but nothing that really stood out as memorable for me.

THE LAIRD'S VOW-It was okay. Cute story but sorely lacking of details.

KIDNAPPING THE LAIRD-Yet another story that held great promise but quickly fell flat. The premise was intriguing and I found myself absorbed in the story of a man determined to marry the first woman he sees. The main problem with this story is that it's too short. There was no gradual lead up to their relationship and it doesn't make for a satisfying story at all.

THE REIVER- The premise was great but it lacked soooo many details that would have made this a good story. I was hoping to find out more about "Reva" and about her past, but the fact that this was so short made that impossible. I don't normally like books like this but if Ms. Barbosa ever decided to expand on this story I would definitely read it.

FOREVER MINE-The thing I didn't like about this story was all the gory violence that it included. I felt that some of the details were really unnecessary (which was ironic given how short it was and that most stories of this length are sorely lacking in detail), and the heroine wasn't really appealing to me at all. She seemed harsh and abrupt which I suppose suited this story but it just wasn't for me.

THE LAIRD'S FRENCH BRIDE-Really boring and completely predictable; not exciting or interesting at all. And I hate that stories like these are so short because we only get a brief glimpse into the characters and when they fall in love so quickly it's completely far-fetched.

So all in all I didn't really like this book at all but I'm glad I at least tried it. The stories within these pages aren't bad. They're just very short so if you're looking for something with a lot of details, you're likely to be disappointed. I don't know if these are shortened versions of the original stories but some of them I'd be curious to see how they would read had more details been added.

Didn't read every single story, just the first two and the ones by authors I'm familiar with. Enjoyed those stories although the first one seemed to take awhile to build up even though these are short stories.

Entertaining, light-hearted collection of romantic stories. Picked it up to fill in time between the finale of Outlander season 4 and the return of season 5. Did the trick.

After being extremely disappointed in the Mammoth Book of Time Travel Romance I started reading this expecting the worst!

Surprisngly i actually really enjoyed it.

They were a few stories that had me shaking my head but maybe its my Scottish blood, you cant beat a medieval highlander in a kilt lol BUT also had more modern day stories as well, which were enjoyable, except for the fact i wanted to knock some sense into the women.. a man cheats once he will cheat again.. and the excuse he was trying to find himself.. huh...look in the mirror boy!

I loved The French Bride, the humour had me smiling.

Ideal book for picking up and down, and not having to concentrate too much on

Im going to give the mammoth book of irish romances a go now by faith has been restored lol

Ive marked book as a 4, due to the fact were a couple of stories i skimmed through, but was def a enjoyable read.

I was happy enough with the book. I enjoyed most of the stories from past, present, and future Scottish tales. It was a great fix for a Scottish Romance buff like me. I really enjoyed At Last by Jacquie D'Alessandro, The Laird's Vow by Anne Gracie, Kidnapping the Laird by Terri Brisbin, Kissingate Magic by Annette Blair, Her MacKinnon by Sandy Blair and The Laird's French Bride by Connie Brockway.

What I liked the most about this book was that it wasn't a repetative series of stories all taking place in bygone eras. Instead it is a mix of the past, present and future with supernatural, time travel and magic. If you are like Scottish Romance then this book is a great find for you to have a few little treasures to pass the time.

I can't say what it is about Scotland that captivates me. Perhaps it's the mystery, or romance, or the myth, lore, and legends. Or perhaps it's visions of handsome, rugged Highlanders dancing in my head :) Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the stories. To be honest, there was not one bad story, which was a nice suprise as you never know what you're going to get with a book like this one. I can't say that one particular story "jumped out" for me, but I am looking forward to reading more books by the authors included in this book. I would def recommend this book to other readers.

The 'Anthology' curse strikes again! Maintaining coherence and quality through a sheer 21 stories is no joke, and unfortunately they were disappointing

I went through almost all of the short stories; but the book is much a mismatch of Highland cliches, unpalatable plots, strange twists- this one is a big pass..

There is however, one sole silver lining- Connie Brockway's The Laird's French Bride. The author takes the chance to tell the much realistic and believable story of a 22 year old young laird and his 17 year old foreign bride- that would not have found a market as a standalone. Brava Ms Brockway!

This was a really good book. I liked all the stories and the brilliance of the highland warrior. There were maybe one or two stories that weren't great but overall I enjoyed reading all of them. This is another book I would like to have on the shelf. Action, adventure, brogues, kilts, mysteries, emotions, courage, brave and bonny heroes/heroines, and enough steamy scenes to melt frost. This was varied and interesting. Stories from way back when to nowadays and one into the future. I enjoyed them all and am probably going to visit them again. Enjoy!

If you enjoy a good Scottish or Highland romance, these short stories are worth the read. I enjoyed about 1/2 of them immensely and the only reason I didn't enjoy the other 1/2 as much as I could have was due to feeling like the author got to the max page count and said, "OMG, I have to stop now." Many of the stories could have transitioned into wonderful full novels.

Totally loved Donna Grant's Forever Mine, Connie Brockway's The Laird's French Bride, Sandy Blair's Her MacKinnon, Heather McCollum's Highland Heart, Patricia'Grasso's The Pagan Bride...

I liked this book better than the Irish Romance and Regency Romance Mammoth Books. There were several of the stories I really liked as well as some I didn't like at all. Some of the authors featured in this anthology are authors I follow and I enjoyed their stories as well as finding a few new authorsto enjoy.

I would give this book a 3.5 if I could. Though I did not enjoy all of the stories, it is a well rounded book that will have stories for any reader who likes romances centered around Scottish characters. The collection featured stories from different time periods, some included magic or supernatural elements, and some were quite humorous.

Usually when there is a bunch of stories put together in one book, it not usually a good thing. You would end up with stories ranging from really bad to really good. But, I was pleasantly surprised in this book, The Mammoth Book of Scottish Romance. In my opinion, the stories ranged from good to really good. And, it doesn't hurt that most of the heroes were sexy Highlanders. Mmmmm!

This was a fun & fast read. I love anthologies. It's always fun to read short stories & meet new authors.
This was my first "Mammoth" book and I enjoyed most of the stories, some were definitely better than others. I think the editing could use a thorough re-check. At 600 pages & 20 different authors a few mistakes didn't bother me much.

March 18, 2014: Still a great book. As I said before, there are stories that i liked and ones that I didn't. Reading it the second time helped me to appreciate some of the details that I missed the first time

June 26, 2013: Overall, the stories were amazing. A couple of them were a little rushed or felt incomplete but even so they were very enjoyable.

Seriously, this is one of the most exhausting reads I've ever done. Some stories are a little on the "mehh" side, some palatable, and some are just downright awesome. One thing I would've liked though was for some of the stories to be longer and more detailed. A few were poorly made(one was so anticlimactic when it you expect something grand to happen!)

I'm not sure why I keep buying/requesting these anthologies. Most of the time there is only 1 or 2 stories that actually hold my interest, and this one is no different. My review of this one: boring.

I enjoyed this collection of stories for the most part. One or two of them seemed a bit simplistic, but others were very good indeed. A definite must read if you have a love of strong men from Scotland.
