My name is Rowan. I once had it all... A great family and comfortable middle-class existence. I knew who I was. I knew my place in the world. Then tragedy struck, erasing everyone and everything in an instant. My world died; my circumstances forever changed. I was broken. And then I was thrust into their world.
The King's.
Jaden and Jaxon King.
They were identical twins who were as different as night and day. One was light and laughter, the other dark and brooding. But in my brokenness, I was drawn to the darkness. And he was drawn to me.
Together we were torture and redemption.
Pain and pleasure.
Until one day I learned... They were as broken as me.
Now the question is... Will we destroy one another?
I’m a little old horror writer who puts her nightmares down on paper. I was born on Halloween and live with my husband in a haunted house far off the beaten track. When I’m not writing, I frequent used bookstores and prowl the woods.
‘There was always this weird chemistry between us’ - Discovering love
Oklahoma physician and author Michelle Scott, whose Breathe Trilogy of romances captured a strong audience, now opens another romance that explores the psychology of attraction well. She opens her novel with a telling Prologue: ‘The scent of cherries filled our darkened hallway before I ever saw her. The sweet smell followed her around and stayed after she left. She appeared out of nowhere. She was so beautiful… beautifully broken. Her name is Rowan. A dark cloud of loss followed her, though she worked to hide it. I didn’t trust her. I don’t trust anyone except Jax, my twin brother, and Wes, our best friend. But even in my distrust, I was drawn to her. She was a temptress with dark red hair and green eyes. A queen entering the King’s domain. I’m the King… Jaden King. From the moment I saw her I decided we’d have her bowing before long. That is… if she doesn’t bring us to our knees first. Because one thing about this girl that no one knows… she’s stronger than she looks.’
Using her strong gift for characterization, Dr. Scott opens with an introduction to Rowan, the strong female figure of the story, at a funeral for her parents: ‘There are a million strangers in my house. Well, maybe only forty or so, but it feels like a million. It’s stifling with all these bodies crammed into this modest space. It’s floors I walked across for seventeen years…This place has been my only home from the time I was born. My refuge.’ And having established a significant character, the coming move to San Diego to live in a wealthy man’s mansion opens the stage for an insightful examination of the growth of an interesting romance. Dr. Scott understands relationship building and expresses insights resulting in a completely satisfying - and refreshing - novel. Recommended
