The shadows of war between humans and demons have begun to stretch over Aona. Demons march toward a weakened Crossus. With time against them, Spirit and his team must travel north to the country of Aloweth in search of an ancient artifact, powerful enough to aid in the inevitable battles ahead.
However, demons are not the only danger. An elusive organization threatens to tear apart Aloweth from the inside. Still struggling from a heavy loss, Spirit is thrown into conflict with a familiar enemy as he realizes what it means to be Vanguard, and humanity's greatest hope.
SUNCHASER doubled down on the elements that I most enjoyed about Demonslayer, and the result was a slower, more character driven book. While there was less action, the author stuck more closely to our group of heroes rather than digressing with many secondary character chapters. Did I miss having a glimpse into the demon side of the conflict? Sometimes. But I think the author made the right call! The events of the first book left a lot for the characters to unpack, especially Spirit. Despite the support system around him, he was really struggling with everything that happened and his purpose, and I really appreciated how delicately the author introduced the mental help topic and how positively Spirit’s experience with professional help was presented.
My favorite part of the story, however, was watching the whole group growing closer and really solidify that found family dynamic that was working so well already in the first book. I especially enjoyed the girls getting closer, and getting to know more about those characters that were introduced later on in the first book. This group of misfit heroes is impossible not to love!
I really recommend giving this series a try if you want a YA-friendly take on epic fantasy with a very strong found family component, very little romance content and a whole lot of epic! I’m still gasping after the cliffhanger of this one. I did not see that twist coming!
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed Sunchaser! Though it wasn’t quite as action packed as Demonslayer, I found that I really enjoyed that change of pace. It allowed me to build a deeper connection to the cast of characters, which I didn’t feel I had enough time to do in book one. Although I typically prefer some romance in my books, I felt like the rich found family aspect of this story made up for anything I might have missed normally. Things I loved: that ending! Though it was an insane cliffhanger, it was really well done and has me so excited for book three.
Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed Sunchaser—the sequel to Demonslayer by Ian P. Eviston, even that cliffhanger that rendered me speechless! Highly recommend this series for fans who like their YA high fantasy books character-driven with an emphasis on the found family trope and an epic storyline.
Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions expressed above are entirely my own.
Eviston did another fantastic job developing the world he has created by bringing the reader into the heart of the action. I loved the challenges the characters face and watching them grow together to overcome their obstacles. The final battle was exactly the ending I was hoping to see at the end of the second book of the series. I cannot wait to see Spirit and his team in the next chapter.
