Thomas Cain puts it all on the line again in this exhilarating alternative American History time travel adventure novel! Thomas has managed to rescue Aden, but his futuristic gear is still missing while the Pirate King, Jean Lafitte, is breathing down his neck.
In his efforts to track his items down, will Thomas keep his agreement to bring the pirates to Jackson's aid and achieve America's first victory as a new country? Or will pride bring them all to defeat?
Aden is safe for the most part, and now Thomas must retrieve his missing weapons and gear. In doing so, he's made an enemy of the Pirate King, Jean Lafitte, and his associates, and now he must trudge through the marshes of the Mississippi to follow them, find his missing Webley and vest, and make it back in time to meet up with Jackson.
Just when Thomas thinks that he's managed to find his missing gear, he learns that not only has Lafitte's wastrel brother Pierre absconded with the gear, but he's left Jean Lafitte ready to hang.
In a last ditch effort to find Pierre, Thomas must make a deal with the devil himself and bring the villainous, once-reputable now-Pirate Queen Lady Theodosia with him to locate Pierre and his weapons, and make sure the pirates don't hang for their offenses. Will the enemy of his enemy become his friend?
Another impossible task, or so it seems. But can the Pale Rider rise to the occasion once more, save the lives of hundreds, and keep his own neck out of a noose?

This is a well written book with a cast of strong characters and an interesting storyline. The author takes you on an alternative time travel adventure in American Military history. It's an intriguing story with well described characters and steam, moves fluidly and is an intriguing story with well described scenes and is a great read for their adventurous and military genre. I loved the mystery and would recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
Very good book. To see what might happen if someone turned right instead of left keep me reading. Can not wait for the next book. When will the sixth book come out?
One of the best alternate History series I've come across. Each book is very well done and action packed. I cannot speak highly enough about it. Truly a fun read.
Lafitte's Chance (Pale Rider Alternative History Book 5)
Fast paced, page turning and extremely detailed sword fighting. Book five was as interesting as the first four. I will note that the editing was not as good.
Lafitte’s Chance is the fifth book in an alternate history series by Michael Roberts. Normally with alternate history, the idea is to take a point in history and extrapolate how a different outcome would have changed history. In this case, it’s the reverse. Thomas Cain has come from a future very different from the one we know. In that timeline, the British quelled the Revolution and kept the Colonies under their rule, which also allowed them to dominate the world for at least the next two centuries. One of Cain’s friends, Aden, came into possession of an alien spaceship which they determined was able to travel in time. Tired of living under British rule, Thomas traveled back to help the Americans win against the British.
While Thomas succeeded from his standpoint and found a life following the war, James, the pilot of the alien ship returned to the future only to find that the British had managed to reclaim the colonies during the War of 1812. Aden and James attempted to go back to 1812 themselves and solve the problem, only to have a modern revolver and bulletproof vest fall into the hands of pirates. Afraid to return back to his future, James sought out Thomas in the past. Together they set out to free Aden from kidnappers in New Orleans and retrieve the weapon and vest.
Lafitte’s Chance picks up where Aden’s Chance left off. Although Thomas and James have successfully rescued Aden, they still have to find the weapons. Thomas also needs to make sure that General Andrew Jackson will be victorious against the British in New Orleans. In both respects, Thomas must deal with the local pirates. Jean Lafitte is the local pirate king who runs just about everything in New Orleans, except for the Mayor and Governor. Thomas must walk the line of recovering the items in Lafitte’s possession while at the same time convincing him to side with the Americans against the British.
I love these books! The present day culture compared to the past culture is well written. Not everyone can create such interesting and strong characters. The books are short in pages (around or less than 300 pages). The colonial day historical figures we meet come alive we renewed respect from this reader. Also these books give a renewed respect for our founding fathers and their hope of self government. Eating, drinking, and fireworks once a year in July just doesn't cut it. The first and second books were five star plus books. The story of War of 1812 New Orleans battle isn't finished yet, so I can't give an overall rating. However, Lafitte's Chance...book five is an English grammar nightmare! I was able to somewhat ignore this, but it slowed me down. I find specifically the mix up of subjective and objective cases is a grammar pandemic in our culture. I do wonder if the grammar and editing mess in this book is due to dead lines for publication and an author who is a full time police man...Thank you for your service Michael Roberts and thank you for sharing this continuing story with us. Series so far, Four stars. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves fast paced entertainment, but doesn't mind the up close and personal blood and guts fighting of th
this is still going strong in the Pale Rider Alternative History series, it was a great concept from a time travel novel. The characters were what I was hoping for and I enjoyed going on this journey with them. It left me wanting to read more in this series and from Michael Roberts.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
smelly dirty pirates and they are on the American side. this is so believable that it could actually have happened this way. the real hero is sometimes not the expected one. now when will Pale Rider ride again?
Excellent continuation of a great series. The way Michael Robert’s combines his fictional character with historical people and situations is great. I can’t wait to read the next installment.
