In a sleepy little parish just outside of New Orleans, murder is no rare occurrence. Sergeant Lance Knight has a pile of unsolved homicide cases on his desk. On the surface, none seem to be connected. The victims are all men with money or power. An investment banker, a lawyer, and a local politician. They don’t socially run in the same circles. Lance can’t find a connection. Working closely with coroner Gina Goodwin, Lance and Gina discover a pattern. Three unrelated things the bodies all have in common—a string of lethal connections. Is it just a coincidence, or is it something more? Things heat up when Lance realizes he’s getting close to finding the killer, and everything spirals out of control. Can he piece it together before it’s too late?
Pikasho Deka of Readers’ Favorite says, “The authors perfectly capture the feel and ambiance of rural Louisiana, with its swamps, poisonous reptiles, and the underlying criminal underworld. The hyper-realistic and gritty tone of the narrative is peppered with bouts of humor sprinkled throughout the pages. Can't recommend it highly enough.”
As a visionary storyteller and animal activist, Erik Daniel Shein blends his talent for children’s and young adult writing with a passion for CGI animation and animal health and well-being. He has authored and co-written more than 30 novels and feature films, including the animated fantasy adventure tale, The Legend of The Secret Pass (Lions Gate Entertainment, 2019), which first began as a co-written novel by Erik and fellow author, Melissa Davis. In addition to his writing, Erik is the founder and CEO of Shein Partnership LLC; a revered leader in the entertainment and publishing domains; and a producer, voice actor, and trained herpetologist.
Sergeant Lance Knight is the kind of detective I like. A rugged, tough man, quiet and keeps to himself. While the ladies would all probably like him, I would think the wall he puts up keeps women at a distance if and until he approaches them. That is like the relationship he has with the coroner in the book, Gina, who learns that a toxin in the bodies that begin to pile up, is one of the things that link several suspicious deaths (that look like murder) together. And, it is snake toxin, venom. The only other evidence at the scenes of the dead, found by Knight, poppets and playing cards, left at every one. But, what do they mean? Well, when they find that out, they may have answers that solve the case. An, so will readers.
When a man asks a woman to trust him and she replies,“I do trust you, Lance (any man’s name). It’s the rest of the world that escapes me”; that is the woman that he should be with. But, of course, a brainy, nice woman who works as a coroner is not the kind of woman this man would want. And, when you learn the fate of the current relationship he has, the man only gets dumber and dumber to readers.
That Lance has no idea Lexie, the woman he is dating, is as nefarious as she is, never got onto her lies until the very end, makes the man a poor investigator indeed. That this man is having a hard time solving murders, go figure. He is probably sleeping with the killer or someone who knows a lot more about what is going on then she ever lets on. While there were no hints to readers (about Lexie), that there were very few people in Lance’s life presented in the book make it even worse. In fact, his own life is in danger and is onto nothing, he is none the wiser til the last few pages.
Later in the story, when readers learn that Lexie is not who she seems to be, is the beginning of where the story begins to fall apart for me. When she finally discloses who she really is, she provides Lance with the only real clue he has as to who might be the killer of the three bodies that have been found. Everything that means anything in this mystery, seems to come from Lexie. And, that Lance does not question her motives, especially since she has hidden who she was from him for so long, well, it's strange that a trained investigator would take all she says at face value (which he does), after finding out she had deceived him for so long.
Until Lexie’s “disclosure”, though nothing much goes on in the case, other bodies are found, the little evidence they have is barely talked about and the coroner, Gina, gives a little information about the toxin from a snake, there is very little to the actual case that is talked about. Really, Lethal Connections is a lot about Lance sharing his thoughts about his relationship with Lexie who, it seems, could be a big part of the case. However, this is never a thought from Lance until the bitter end. And, maybe the fact that the authors of Lethal Connections were able to mask a big culprit in the crime so well for readers, (because I really never thought anything deeper was going on with the character than what was presented by Lance) with so little others presented, in the book, character-wise, well, that is a feat in itself, I guess.
While Lethal Connections was a little contrived for me, in the end of the book, when I learn that Lance, the coroner, Gina and their supervisor, Kurt will be part of a unit that combines the State of Louisiana with the FBI, a task force that serves both federal and state, the new Poison ID unit. And, though I felt the mystery was never completely explained, in the end, what Lexie really was doing, what, if any, part the “Drug Lord” Sasha Volaria, Queen of Diamonds, played, as a reader I would have just wanted to know a little more. At the end of the book, I just felt that it was a little unfinished, as to what had happened, what went on with Lexie and that more could have been explained.
Since this is a review, I don’t want to reveal too much about the book, ruining it for other readers. I am sorry if this leaves the review a little cryptic and this was a harder review, for me, because of those reasons. But I also wanted to be able to say enough to give an opinion about the story, especially to the writers. Because, though there were some things I felt that went wrong with the story, I still would like to read the next one and see the Potion ID unit go on. And, I feel that there is enough here that the story can and should.
However I do hope for improvements in the next book. Maybe more explanations, more details about the poisons and toxins (the focus of the series) and a better wrap up, in the end. Maybe that there is a better explanation of why things happened the way they did. Or, if the next book begins explaining why things happened the way they did in the first, what Lexie had going on, what Sasha Volaria had to do with things, if anything.
Lethal Connections is a fair start to the Poison ID Unit series. There is something there that I think I felt between Lance and the coroner, Gina, despite both of their reservations they have about a relationship with one another. I would love to see something happen within that relationship, for the heat to slowly turn up there, as they both seem like good people and a great match. This makes their partnership, for investigations, a good match in the books, too.
Also, I enjoyed Kurt and would like to see him take a little more role in the next book. And, while I can understand, to some extent, the focus on Lexie and Lance’s relationship, it felt like too much of the book focused on him debating on it, rather than the mystery he was supposed to be solving. Not ready to abandon the series because there was likable material here and I found the read fast, engaging and kept going back to it, I am however hoping for the next in the series to provide a little more than what I saw with the first book. Readers might want to take a chance with Lethal Connections as I did, as it seems like the Poison ID unit is moving on and up to better when the series continues.
Happy Reading!

This book had me from reading the blurb and since I'm drawn to police thrillers decided to read it as an arc.
Good start to a possible series. Plausible storyline which keeps you interested (although I did guess who the undercover person was), the ending was an unexpected surprise.
Strong likeable characters with plenty of humourous aspects sprinkled throughout. Would be good to find out how these characters develop with other cases.
It lost a star due to repetition of personal and some work aspects going on with the main character.
Overall definitely worth a read.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The premise is good, some parts flow well, the general idea of the story and investigation had promise; however some parts drag and the repetitive inner monologue of the main character kept taking me out of the story to roll my eyes. I didn’t feel like the police characters were portrayed very accurately. I received a free advanced reader’s copy snd am voluntarily reviewing.
This would be a super book for a long journey as when you start to read it there is no putting it down. Well written and thoroughly plotted. I cannot wait to read more..this is the first book of the Poison ID unit.

Lethal Connections: The Poison ID Unit is a thriller novel by Erik Daniel Shein, Melissa Davis and Karen Fuller, published by World Castle. This short and sweet book packs a big punch in terms of plot and pacing, something I always appreciate in this genre. Set in Louisiana, Lethal Connections centers on Lance Knight, a sergeant in his Parish’s Special Investigations Division. Three curiously similar homicide cases pop up, putting Knight on the hunt for a potential serial killer. What follows is a case filled with intrigue, twists and snakes (you heard me right). As Lance inches closer to the truth can he do what it takes to survive while learning who his real friends are?
Lethal Connections ticks all the right boxes in what I enjoy about a mystery thriller. First, the setting of Louisiana is distinctive and sets the novel apart from other big city settings. With some of the bodies popping up in marshes and a number of wildlife in the mix, the authors do a stellar job of making the location as much of a character as the humans.
Second, the plot kicks off from chapter one and never lets off the brake. Part of the fun of a book like Lethal Connections is getting immersed into the mystery from the get go and following along with the lead characters on the hunt for the killer. Lethal Connections does this well with its relatively short chapters and page count, but shorter doesn’t always mean better. Kudos to the authors for executing a tight story; Lethal Connections is the perfect length for this story and things are setup for the team to possibly show up again in another novel.
Lastly, Lethal Connections introduces a cast of characters that are likable yet fallible. Lance Knight is a workaholic who struggles to hold down a meaningful romantic relationship. His peer, coroner Gina Goodwin, is a morgue nerd with a quirky personality. And the villain, who will remain nameless for spoiler purposes, isn’t your run of the mill bad guy. I wasn’t expecting the reveal of the villain to happen the way it did, I loved the element of surprise in this book. Lethal Connections definitely kept me on my toes I can’t give it higher praise than that.
Lethal Connections makes for a great summer read. With it’s unique setting, engaging plot and diverse cast of characters, it’s a murder mystery thriller that you won’t want to miss. I give Lethal Connections 🧢🧢🧢🧢/5- recommend!
Lance Knight, a homicide detective in New Orleans, has his work cut out for him when bodies begin to stack up. He teams up with Gina, an intelligent coroner who doesn't give up so easily to solve a challenging case. Thomas Wilcox, a man who was dumped in the swamp with a distinct mark on his body, is just one of many that end up dead. Are these deaths connected? Is there a serial killer on the loose? As the investigation deepens, Lance soon becomes a target. Unsure of whom to believe, he knows one thing, he must find the killer before they find him.
The story immediately opens with drama and suspense, and I was instantly hooked. The authors provide readers with a captivating narrative that will keep them on the edge of their seats. Lance is passionate about his work, and that takes precedence over anything in his life. Gina is the coroner who is methodical, intelligent, and also passionate about her work. I enjoyed that the authors kept the storyline moving while providing short backstories on the characters introduced in the stories. This helped the story to move along while also giving the reader a sense of each character's motivations. Authors Erik Daniel Shein, Melissa Davis, and Karen Fuller have combined their writing skills and creativity to create a thrilling story with likable characters. The details of the dead bodies may be a turn-off to some, but I found it intriguing. The twist at the end threw me for a loop and was the icing on the cake for this book.
I highly recommend this gripping read to fans of thrillers and crime fiction. It is the perfect read for suspense lovers with strong and intelligent characters. Lethal Connections is an engaging and page-turning novel that will not disappoint.
I received a free copy of this book from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. There is a serial killer on the loose in rural New Orleans, employing exotic methods to despatch their victims. Sergeant Lance Knight must identify the perpetrator while managing his other cases and attempting to balance work and life. Along the way, he is provided with invaluable assistance from the brilliant yet peculiar coroner, Gina Goodwin and his captain, Kurt Donovan. The closer they get to the truth, though, the higher the stakes for potential victims, and themselves.
This kept me guessing to the end, and that end was unexpected. Genuine detective work and realistic technological knowhow enhanced the plot and guided you to the finale. This was an entertaining story.
The characters are relatable and likeable. Their emotions, behaviour and quirks help you empathise with them, eliciting concern about their well-being throughout the story.
The authors sometimes explain too much, not giving readers a chance to finish their thoughts. This I feel sometimes takes away from the experience of expanding your imagination, because you are being told ‘what to think’ or ‘what happened next’. It would have been better if they gave us less.
I would recommend this to lovers of ‘boots on the ground’ detective thrillers and mystery buffs. For anyone that appreciates the Harry Bosch novels by Michael Connelly, this is a good starting point before delving into those.
I have to admit to being disappointed by the end of this book. It started really well. It was a great police procedural with hints of voodoo and possibly black magic, set in St Bernard Parish in Louisana. Sgt Lance Knight of the St Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office, along with Parish Coroner Gina Goodwin are investigating the deaths of three prominent men in the area. Elements of the crimes have the detectives wondering if practitioners of the occult are involved. The details of the police investigation are handled well, in my opinion. It felt realistic and accurate. The possible voodoo and occult elements felt authentic and well-researched. The characters were multi-dimensional and relatable with natural feeling dialogue. But then I came to the last quarter of the book and it just fell apart. It was so contrived and out of left field, I was ready to throw my Kindle across the room. When I finished the book I realized that it was written by three different authors. Maybe that's why the last quarter felt so weird and different from the rest. I had hoped that there would be a series when I first started, but now, even if there is, I won't be checking out any more of them. Sorry.
I received a review copy from the authors via BookSiren and this is my honest opinion.
Really enjoyable read. Love New Orleans and reading this brought back memories of the climate, vegetation and landscape. Good, fast moving story with just enough plot twists to satisfy the reader. Great characters in what appears to be the first book of promising series. Follows the story of unexplained deaths in a Parrish of New Orleans and the investigation by the local homicide squad aided by a feisty, savvy coroner. Are they looking at isolated murders or is a serial killer at work? Interesting introduction of possible snake venom adds an interesting touch. The information about snakes is pretty accurate but as it hits one of my specialty areas of work the effects of the snake venom is a 'little stretched'. But why let a technicality get in the way of a good story. You like a nice police hunt for a murderer/murders, a bit of teasing romance, a perplexing set of clues and some humor thrown in for good measure all against the background of superstitions that abound in New Orleans, then here is the book for you.
This exciting suspense thriller will pull you in and keep you on the edge of your seats. The characters are captivating.Lance is a Sgt of a special investigation unit.He works homicide. He is supposed to meet Lexus for a hookup but has to cancel because of a homicide. When he arrives on the scene where coroner Gina is he asks her if she knows the cause of death to which she says there are no bullet holes or knife wounds so she can't say until she gets him on her table. Is this a one time thing or is it a serial just getting started.?There are so many twists and turns to this story you will be riveted until the very last page an leave you begging for more.I love the way this amazing author brings the story to life before your eyes you can feel the characters emotions an their pain.I can hardly wait to see what's next by this multi talented author.I voluntarily decided to review this advanced reader copy because its a really good suspense thriller an I wanted other avid readers to know its so worth reading.
3.5 stars A dead body is discovered at the Wetlands Observatory in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. Sergeant Lance Knight is sent to investigate the goings-on, with an assist from coroner Gina Goodwin. There is a need to watch out for effigies and the "haunted marshes cursed by voodoo priestesses". Snakebite & black on the victim's ankle - but was that what really killed him? Then, a second body and effigy are found, also in the water and superstitions abound. A decent enough start to a new series - detecting with added poisoning - and a nice line in snakes. This short novel suffers somewhat from an abundance of repetition, which is unfortunate, and an excess of snake names (Shein is, apparently, a herpetologist and clearly got carried away). Lance Knight and Gina Goodwin seem interesting enough characters, their boss is a bit of a cipher at the moment but maybe will come into his own in future entries in this series. All in all, promising.

If you love true crime and detective novels, this one will keep you on the edge of your seat! A really fast and fun novel about the inner-linked cases of several men who have been killed through the means of a rare snake's venom. At first, the victims didn't seem to have anything in common until their puncture wounds were discovered. After Sergeant Lance Knight and coroner Gina Goodwin worked the case, a new picture formed...one that had these men connected in the worst of ways.
Although I figured something was amiss with one of the side-characters from the start, it was still a bit of a shock to find out that they were the culprit behind the murders. It was a fast-paced and enthralling novel that I was able to finish in a couple of hours. Felt more like a screenplay, with was wonderful, because I could picture every bit of dialogue and scenery as though it were a movie. Great fun for a lazy weekend or a trip to the beach! Definitely recommend this book!
"Lethal Connections" by Erik Daniel Shein is a gripping murder mystery and thriller that takes readers on a suspenseful journey through the dark underbelly of St. Bernard Parish in Louisiana. Thank you to BookSirens, the publisher and the authors for the ARC.
**** This was an easy and interesting enough read. Police officer in small town is charged with investigating a series of unusual murders.
I did find that the authors kept repeating the same things about the characters; Gina is a tough woman, Lance is not superstitious, Lexie is needy.
I also think the more interesting parts should have come a little bit earlier than they did. I wasn't really surprised by who the perp turned out to be but I would have preferred that she had a more interesting reason for committing the murders. I would have also loved to see a bit of a background story for her as well instead of the brief mention of her parents at the end.
A good read overall. Totally recommend if you’re looking for easy, interesting crime fiction.
This book is action packed from the start and will have readers gripped from the first page to the last. The story in intriguing and fast paced. The pace and suspense is maintained throughout the book. There are twists and turns as tension builds in the thriller. There are some fascinating characters Lance is witty, dedicated and determined with a hint of impulsivity that adds a touch of the unexpected to all that he does. I love Gina as a character. I like how strong and intelligent she is. I hope she appears in more books as she’s a character that is really enjoyable to follow through the book. I also like her interactions with the other characters, as they add a human touch to situations. I’m looking forward to reading more books by these authors in the future.

This was a great mystery/thriller book that will keep you entertained the whole way through. I loved the setting of New Orleans and actually haven’t read a book with that backdrop in forever! It’s a little over 200 pages which I found to be the perfect length for the story. It’s short enough that you can read in one sitting.I enjoyed the journey and felt satisfied with the end but I do wish I could be back with these characters. I think there's more for the reader to learn but I won’t spoil anything! I will say, I did figure out who was at fault but that didn’t take anything away from the story. If anything, that means the author left great clues for the reader. Overall, this book was really enjoyable and I would highly recommend it. It’s one of those books that has a little bit of everything. It was well written, the pacing was on point, and the characters were likable.
**SPOILER ALERT** When I saw the title, "Lethal Connections, Poison ID Unit", I knew this was something that I needed to read! I enjoy a good, serious dose of "lethal" detective work which the title and book cover implies. It was just a bit disappointing that there wasn't a Poison ID Unit (until the end of the book) and the book read more like a Lifetime movie than a detective story. This in itself is not a bad thing, as the storyline was strong enough to keep my interest. With further character development, there is definitely potential for a sequel. I would suggest this book for someone who wants an easy read for the beach or while on a vacation. Give it a read!.

Lethal Connections is an exciting crime novel that keeps the reader in anticipation of a resolution of the tension. If you love crime novels, the try-to-find-the-bad-guy type of novel with a lot of pieces to try to put together, then this novel is for you.
With a suspense-packed progression of events and exciting plot twist, Lethal Connections meets all the cravings of a crime novel lover.
The author uses a simple chronological narration that makes it easy to follow the development of the climax. With a lot of misdirection here and there, lots of uneven pieces, and a lot to ponder, Lethal Connections is an excellent novel and I highly recommend it.
Sergeant Lance Knight has a sexy yet sometimes needy girlfriend, and a very demanding job on a unit dealing with homicide in a rural Louisiana parish.
He is lucky enough to work with his clever Captain Duncan, and perhaps more fortunate to have Dr. Gina and her many areas of interest and degreed specialties. Always good to have an herpetologist on your team when you work in swampland
mysterious murders appear to be tangled with exotic smuggling, sex trade, connections among the wealthy and the privileged
surprises lurk as details emerge - and some of them are really lethal
intrigue, murder, sexy action thriller and whodunnit
I really enjoyed this book. It gave me ‘Bones’ feels a bit with the relationship between Lance and Gina and I’m hoping to read more about their connection in future books - surely this can’t be the only book?? It was a good mystery with a twist that involved the character I was a bit suspicious of, but not how I thought it would happen. AND then there was another twist at the end that I most definitely did not see coming! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is a gripping story from the first few pages and the more you read you cannot put it down. The story features Sergeant Lance Knight who has a series of murders which don't appear to be connected and he asks the coroner Gina Goodwin to help to connect the murders. I really got caught up in the story as they try to find the serial killer and could not work out the killer and this is a tense thriller that keeps you gripped until the end, Would highly recommend to anyone who likes thrillers. Lethal Connections: The Poison ID Unit written by Erik Daniel Shein, Melissa Davis & Karen Fuller is an enjoyable mystery to read.
I enjoyed meeting the three main characters Lance Knight, Kurt Donovan and Gina Goodwin. Lexi was a mystery or as one author described a conundrum. Their working relationships and interactions as well as their individual expertise and personalities were well developed.
The murders and their investigation dialogs were eye opening, intriguing and thought provoking.
Lance and Gina have an interesting relationship, no sparks but well an understanding and interest in each others work and thought process. The love interest of Lance and the development of that I totally didn't expect, I had Mark as the deceptive and suspicious one. I loved the ending to give us follow up books to this series.

Holy moly this was good. But I'm with Lance on this....noooooo no no no to the snakes. If you have a fear of them,be careful with this book. *Shudder* the book was so good though. I had a feeling who the bad guy was but man did the whole reason behind it all....wow. it's really really good. I hope there's more of this coming with these guys. I'm anxious to see what's next.

The Lethal Connection is a murder mystery located in a small Parish in Louisiana. Rich, powerful men are being murdered, but there does not seem to be anything to connect them together. The story line, as well as some of the characters could use some more development. Unfortunately, there is too much “talking in their heads” which really distracts me from the story overall. Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC of this book.
Sergeant Lance Knight is a cop in a small parish just outside New Orleans but is no stranger to murder. Lance has a huge pile of unsolved cases on his desk but none seem to be connected. They just appear to be a random set of unsolved cases. Lance relies on Coroner Gina Goodwin and together they finally find a pattern...they all have lethal connections to one another. Can Lance find the killer before thinks escalate even further?
I highly recommend this gripping read to fans of thrillers and crime fiction. It is the perfect read for suspense lovers with strong and intelligent characters.Engaging and page-turning novel that will not disappoint. Captures the feel and ambiance of rural Louisiana perfectly. A quick read for me with shades of Kay Scarpetta in the coroner, Gina Goodwin.

I had a great time reading this, it does what I was hoping for from a crime thriller. It was a great concept in the Poison ID Unit series, and the plot worked well. The characters were unique and I'm so glad I was able to read this. I can't wait to read more from this series.

Could have used a couple maar stars to give:-) The story is well crafted with a HUGE twist, and the characters have the kind of depth that makes you feel like they've been in your life forever and you're right beside them thru the whole book. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.
