Children love Bible stories, especially when they are written in age-appropriate, easy-to-understand language.
Bible Stories for Bedtime, written specifically for ages three to eight years, has more than 300 pages worth of the best-loved Bible stories your children will delight in. All the excitement, adventure, history, and spiritual truths of the Bible are skillfully presented. At the end of each story, you'll even find questions to help stimulate discussion and to help precious young minds understand God's word.
I read this book to my son at bedtime every night. I both liked and did not like it. I liked the fact that they made the stories short and easily understood for my son's sake. Each story is no more than a page to a page and a half long -- the perfect length for reading two or three stories right before bedtime. However, I didn't like that they omitted some details from the stories. I realize that they did this for the purpose of sheltering the child from harsh truths, but in some cases, the details they left out were truly essential to the nature of the story. For instance, in the story of Adam and Eve being hiding from God, the author leaves out the fact that Adam and Eve hid from God because they were ashamed of being naked in front of God. So, the way it is worded in this story, it seems as though Adam and Eve were simply afraid of God. My son actually asked, "Why were they afraid of God? God is a good guy." Ha.
So, as I said before, I both liked and did not like it. Also, the illustrations are nothing special.
I absolutely LOVED this entire novel, it was very well written. I have seen some reviews stating that the context were for an older age range, and I would have to agree to an extent. My son is five years-old and for the most part he understand what each story was trying to tell him, the only trouble we really ran into were the questions that seemed to difficult to him. I made up questions for him that I thought were more appropriate as we went along.
I would like to state though that I, as an adult and a parent, learned so much while reading this to my son. Yes, the material is made for small children to understand, but there is just something about reading it through the eyes of a child (and hearing their questions) that helps us all to understand God a little better than before. I highly recommend this Bible Story Book, and I will read this again to my one year-old when she is old enough.
