Author and illustrator Michael Garland was born in Manhattan in 1952. He studied art at Pratt Institute and soon after graduating, he sold his first illustration to True Confessions magazine. He has written or illustrated over 40 books.
Tommy receives a number of notes from his Aunt. Each not contains clues to a place that provides a puzzle that Tommy must solve before the next step. Fun story for children.
Not only an Easter Egg book, this story is full of puzzles to solve, a kind of hide-and-seek game.
Another way to describe this book is Authentically Interactive. Your kids will likely love to solve these puzzles, find the hidden words, find a message in letters.
Moreover, these are illustrations by Michael Garland, not only words. I've never seen a picture book artist like him.
Lesson to be learned: Interactive book where the reader is participating in a scavenger hunt and looking for things throughout the book. Will need a pencil and paper to keep track. Answers are on the last page.
Colors & themes used: Easter, Abstract art & fun unique book, counting, other languages, spelling, “I-spy” format
This is one of several in the “Look Again” book series by the author. This means you get more for your money than just a nicely told tale. The book is both written and illustrated by Michael Garland and he packs a lot into his story.
It begins with a letter to the reader from Aunt Jeanne who is the aunt to the young boy through whose eyes we see the story. The letter is a sweet rhyme that tells what will be found in the following pages and suggests the reader pay close attention. Aunt Jeanne leaves Tommy a note to follow a bunny. Like the rabbit in Alice in Wonderland he leads Tommy down a hole to a magical place filled with beautiful sights. No scary stuff here like in “Alice” just lots of lush artwork.
Throughout the story Tommy runs across additional notes in rhyme from Aunt Jeanne. She also can be found hiding in the pages of the book as well, no doubt looking after Tommy. The book features a cavalcade of white rabbits scurrying here and there and directing Tommy. The author even pays homage to the song “Easter Parade” with a two page spread of stylish Easter bonnets and then shows an assortment of fold parading down 5th Avenue.
But don’t close the book when you see the final Happy Easter. The last page gives you an variety of ideas for doing a search and find in the book including the many ways of saying Happy Easter in languages from around the world.
The Great Easter Egg Hunt is an adventure story, a mystery, a poem, a maze puzzle, a word search and seek-and-find book, all wrapped up in Michael Garland's delectable artwork.
Everyone should have an Aunt Jeanne. My son kind of has two. So when we read these Aunt Jeanne seek-and-find books, we change Tommy's name to "Thomas", and Jeanne's named to "Dianne" or "Luna". It works. On so many levels.
35 months - this book didn't do much for us. The story was not overly interesting and although my daughter loves eye-spy type books she had no interest in finding or counting the items in this book. I found a soft cover version at the thrift store for 50 cents, like new, and didn't feel compelled to buy it so that says a lot... I usually come out with 15-20 books a visit!
The Great Easter Egg Hunt is full of colorful pictures. Each page has mixed media artwork which may or may not appeal to you. The little poems on the notes that Tommy finds are cute with great rhyming. The story itself is a little dull. I wished the last page noting the “secret” pictures would have been at the beginning so we could have looked for them as we read the book.
This book was so much fun to read. The riddles were fun and the illustrations are filled with so much color! I love how at the end they asked if you notice certain things throughout the book. This is a book that is filled with so much color, and fun, and the riddles are great just as well. It makes you excited to flip through each page. Great book for kids!
This book is about a boy learning about Easter. He follows a bunny and has to complete a bunch of puzzles to continue. This would be a fun interactive book with kids. They will enjoy being able to do something besides just listen.
To me this is an ultimate children's book the illustrations are colorful as well as a bit artsy and then there are all those hidden things for older children to find. A book that can find new meanings as a child grows so one that is perfect for the avid child scholar.
The Great Easter Egg Hunt is imaginative, clever, colorful, and just plain fun. I have been looking for an Easter book for 2 of our grands. This is it. The Great Easter Egg Hunt will be enjoyed for a long time to come.
There is an actual hunt in the pages of this book. There's a lot of detail to pay attention to, but it has a fun story line to go with the awesome illustrations.
