There have been thousands of books written about prayer and millions of sermons preached about it, yet people continue to Why doesn’t God answer me when I cry out to him? In light of all the problems we face in life, we want to know why God is often so “silent” when we pray to him. Anthony DeStefano, author of the bestselling A Travel Guide to Heaven, knew there had to be an answer to this mystery, so he set out on a quest to find prayers that God says yes to all the time . The result is an extraordinary new book that has the ability to dramatically change the lives of readers of all faiths. Each short, powerful prayer in Ten Prayers God Always Says Yes To addresses a particular problem people commonly face in life—from accepting the existence of God to trying to make ends meet; from getting through terrible suffering to coping with everyday stress; from overcoming fear to finding your God-given destiny. Presented with a certainty and vigor that are sure to pique the interest of even those who are not spiritually inclined, these prayers will help readers find solutions to life’s most difficult situations and provide meaningful and inspiring answers to the vexing questions we have about the purpose of our time on earth. In a world awash with superficial self-help books and deceptive gimmicks, Ten Prayers God Always Says Yes To is the real thing. Using hundreds of scriptural references to support his claims, DeStefano writes in a simple, straightforward, and uplifting manner that makes the most profound theological matters understandable to all. In the words of the author, “This is a spiritual treasure chest that is available to everyone….This book is about prayers that work—really, truly work.”
Anthony DeStefano is the bestselling author of 20 Christian books for children and adults, including: A Travel Guide to Heaven, Ten Prayers God Always Says Yes To, Angels All Around Us, Little Star, and The Donkey that No One Could Ride. He has received many prestigious awards from religious organizations worldwide for his efforts to advance Christian beliefs in modern culture.
Several years ago when a good friend’s 16 year old son committed suicide and she was finally talking about and looking for something to read on grief, I thought about this book. I remembered Marian Hammaren’s powerful testimony about how DeStefano’s book helped her recover from the terrible tragedy of losing her only daughter during the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting. After that I bought the book meaning to read it ... but never got around to the book.
Mary's pain and wanting to help her was my incentive to finally read Ten Prayers God Always Says Yes To: Divine Answers to Life's Most Difficult Problems. It's a quick easy read but no less powerful for its accessibility. The questions—and associated prayers—are what give the book structure:
1.) I WISH I COULD BELIEVE: God, Show Me That You Exist. 2.) WHY SHOULD I GET INVOLVED? God, Make Me an Instrument. 3.) WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME? God, Outdo Me In Generosity. 4.) I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE! God, Get Me Through This Suffering. 5.) AM I TERRIBLE PERSON? God, Forgive Me. 6.) THIS STRESS IS KILLING ME! God, Give Me Peace. 7.) OKAY, I ADMIT IT, I’M AFRAID: God, Give Me Courage. 8.) SOMETIMES BEING SMART JUST ISN’T ENOUGH: God, Give Me Wisdom. 9.) WILL I EVER BE HAPPY AGAIN? God, Bring Good Out of this Bad Situation. 10.) WHY AM I HERE ANYWAY? God, Lead Me to My Destiny.
DeStefano writes in plain yet very uplifting language. I found my argumentative mind trying to find fault with reasoning but he was always one step ahead of me but without sounding like a lawyer building a case. Also the structure of the book would allow for someone to read one or two chapters, four or five or the entire book, depending on the need. I skipped around a bit, hitting the chapters dealing with grief first and only later going back and reading the rest of the book. This didn’t present any problem for me. In Hammaren’s review, she mentions other grief stricken parents keeping the book by their bedside and reading chapters on an as-needed basis.
===============================
Thanks Morning Star for that letter you sent from Marian Hammaren endorsing this book! I am definitely going to get this book and read it.
Mr. DeStefano has written a short, but encouraging book on prayer. As the title promises, he lists and discusses ten prayers he affirms that God will always answer: * God, show me that You exist * God, make me an instrument * God, outdo me in generosity * God, get me through this suffering * God, forgive me * God, give me peace * God, give me courage * God, give me wisdom * God, bring good out of this bad situation * God, lead me to my destiny
God desperately wants to communicate with us. "In fact, the history of the world is really the history of God trying to communicate with mankind...The fact is that we have a God who loves to communicate. And the reason is that communication is the starting point for any relationship."
Of course, there are a few "catches." First of all, what we pray for must be in accordance with God's will. God, Mr. DeStefano explains, "is concerned about only one thing: our ultimate good, which boils down to whether or not we make it to heaven. Every request we make of God is 'evaluated' by him in light of that long-term goal." We also have to pray in sincerity, having faith - trust - in God, to whatever extent we are capable at that time. "The goal here is to suspend your disbelief--if only temporarily--to give God a chance to enter your life." And we have to recognize that our actions and attitude may affect our ability to receive answers. Mr. DeStefano explains this through an analogy: "Let's say you took two glasses of water, one clean and clear, the other dark and cloudy, and dropped a shiny gold coin into each of them. Through which glass would it be easier to see the coin fall? Obviously, the glass with the clean water. Well, it's the same with people. If God decides to reach down into your life and touch you in a special way in response to a prayer you've said, it's going to be a little more difficult to see his hand if the life you're leading is dark and cloudy, morally speaking...If you are living an immoral sort of existence now, it might take you a little longer to discern the hand of God in your life--but you will discern it."
Mr. DeStefano gives a beautiful treatise on faith while discussing the first prayer - God, show me that You exist - that in many ways parallels Alma 32. "When you say this prayer, your faith will begin to grow--slowly at first, and then geometrically...The more steps you take toward God, the closer He will come to you...Your faith is going to get deeper and deeper the more time you are exposed to the light of God. It may take some time, but believe me, you are going to get to the point where you no longer have any doubts about his existence."
I particularly loved his explanation of the second prayer - God, make me an instrument. This prayer, he says, "ties into the very essence of God's being, which is love. If we pray for God to use us as an instrument to help someone else, we are really praying to be God-like." He adds, "Saying this prayer is actually going to make you a much happier person than you are right now. Happiness is the thing God is going to give you in return for your selflessness." And then I love this thought: "If God is going to use you as an instrument, he is going to begin fashioning and shaping you so that you can be the best possible instrument...The result is that your life is going to change for the better-you are going to change for the better. Whether you like it or not, you are going to start improving in all sorts of areas. In order to be a channel of God's grace, you are going to necessarily have to grow in grace yourself."
Mr. DeStefano writes from a Catholic perspective, but notes that he made the effort to make it as widely applicable to all Christian faiths as he could. Reading it from an LDS perspective, I was impressed at how applicable and familiar many of his points were.
Other thoughts that stuck with me: * "No matter how great the cause, it's essential that you never neglect your other duties in life...Fulfilling your God-given obligation to your family always comes first." * "Forgiveness has one meaning: wishing a person the greatest possible good--which basically means wishing them salvation and heaven." * "A good Christian is not someone who doesn't ever sin, but someone who repents every time he does." * "No matter how smart you are, no matter how rich you are, there's just no way to prevent 'external' events from interfering with your plans. That's why you can't ever allow your peace of mind to depend on external events." * "C.S. Lewis said that 'courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at its testing point, which means at the point of highest reality.'" * "The goal of authentic spirituality is to be in union with God...When you're in union with God, you have direct and immediate access to all of the things that God is, and that includes peace, courage, love, wisdom, and truth. God wants you to have these things; he wants to shine his light on humanity, to speak his word unceasingly." * "Perhaps the greatest good that can come of suffering is that it has the potential to make a person more Christ-like." * "God is a God of perfect timing." * "Getting right with God is the great shortcut, cure-all, and equalizer in life. It won't necessarily prevent you from suffering, but it will guarantee that you'll see God's plan for your life so much more clearly. And it will guarantee that you accomplish your role in that plan in the most effective, efficient way possible."
I was surprised by how small this book is when I checked it out of the library. But it's a real gem. It's going on my Amazon wishlist, because I'm sure I'll want to refer back to it again and again. It's quite inspirational. The ten prayers are very simple, but the insight in the chapters is amazing. I skipped over chapter 9 (Will I Ever Be Happy Again? God, Bring Good Out of This Bad Situation), because I don't think it's relevant to me right now.
SPOILER WARNING
The ten prayers are: 1. God, show me that you exist (and this chapter made me want to pray this even though I'm a believer!) 2. God, make me an instrument 3. God, outdo me in generosity 4. God, get me through this suffering 5. God, forgive me 6. God, give me peace 7. God, give me courage 8. God, give me wisdom 9. God, bring the good out of this bad situation 10. God, lead me to my destiny
And at the end of the book, the author presents these prayers in a poem format. Read the entire book before reading the poem - it makes it better, more poignant.
I'm not really a very sentimental or emotional person, so I can't give an accurate review on how it would feel to read. If I was to guess, I would guess that most people would really love this. I think it has a lot of emotional appeal.
But more importantly (to my prejudice mind) it also happens to be a great book for theology.
In a world where so many prayers go unanswered, a book about 10 that will always be answered is very welcome, and very thought provoking. And because it's theology is solid (to the best of my knowledge) you learn a lot about the Nature of God and God's relationship to Man with it.
I would highly recommend it to anyone.
There may be one or two points which might make a few people scoff or irritate others, but definitely not enough to make this less than a great read.
It's amazing to note that in our lives we may offer up many prayers to God and the majority will go unanswered (due to our intentions and many other divine factors that we are not aware of). It's great to know that there are 10 prayers that God will always say Yes to because they are always in line with his will and these are it. This is a great read, not only does the author show you the 10 prayers but he gives a in depth analysis on why they work from both a theological and every day thinking perspective. I recommend this book to believers and non-believers alike, great read.
This is a powerful, concise book of ten prayers that if you pray them, they will ALWAYS come true. I read it for my Sunday School class, a chapter a week, and it was just very comforting. Not overly scriptural or preachy, and the author tries to appeal to people who are spiritual, not only Christians. A great introductory book to someone exploring their faith or wondering whether prayer is really effective (or even if God exists at all and can answer your prayers). Very readable.
This book offers a new way to look at prayer. Perhaps it's not that our prayers are not getting answered, but that we're saying the wrong prayers. By the way, ask me how the first prayer got answered...
Among the many treatises on prayer, the content of Anthony DeStefano's book distinguishes itself by being refreshingly accessible, eminently practical, and easily applied. Even as we struggle for the right words or perfect prayer formulas to use when we approach the Almighty, we know what we long for. We want to experience the power of God in our intense moments of need.
Early in the book, the author makes the point that "communication is really the key to understanding the whole mystery of faith." Prayer is a conversation between people and their Creator. DeStefano establishes at the beginning that the issues of life, such as suffering, have no meaning if we don't believe God exists. If with an open mind and heart we ask God to show his existence, He will respond.
Peruse the Table of Contents, and you'll see that each topic of prayer refers to a human need for something that is essential to our individual and collective well being--like courage, wisdom, peace, and servant-heartedness. DeStefano makes the case that these are all qualities God wants us to have. He will supply them to the praying heart according to His good purpose.
I listed these sentence prayers in my commonplace book where I jot down things I want to remember. I'll refer to it often. Ten Prayers God Always Says Yes To is an affirming, inspirational read.
Anthony DeStefano's Ten Prayers That God Always Says Yes To is an accessible and heartfelt exploration of prayer, designed to help readers address common struggles in life through faith. The book's straightforward style make it approachable for both seasoned believers and those new to prayer. The prayers cover relatable themes, such as seeking God’s existence, overcoming suffering, and finding purpose, which many readers found inspiring and practical.
However, the book’s premise—that God always says “yes” to these specific prayers—felt overly optimistic and simplistic to some readers. The universality of these claims left room for skepticism, as life’s complexities often defy such guarantees. Additionally, while the examples and anecdotes were engaging, they sometimes lacked the depth and originality needed to make the book stand out among other works on prayer.
For those seeking a simple, faith-affirming guide, this book may be a helpful resource. However, readers looking for a more nuanced or theologically rigorous discussion of prayer might find it wanting.
DeStefano's books should be read by every American Catholic. I was blessed to have read this within a book club and the conversation, Catholic conversation, that stemmed from this book was awesome and authentic.
My prayer life shifted in a positive direction while reading this book. I admit though that I need to print out the 10 prayers and have them posted as a reminder to continue to pray these authentic prayers of love.
I started this as part of a devotional reading and put it down for a long, long time. This Lent I decided to make it part of my spiritual reading and it was and is a tremendous blessing. Now I want to read it again! The author’s insights on prayer have helped me draw closer to God. The title is somewhat “clickbait-like” but the book itself is a wonderful journey in learning to pray according to the will of God.
This book is an absolute must read for anyone on a spiritual journey. The first 8 chapters were good and quite interesting, but the last two chapters were so beautiful, eye opening and captivating that this has to be a 5 star book. The last two chapters alone make this my top 5 Christian spiritual books I have ever read.
The writer gives enough details, Scripture and stories that are worth spending time and reflecting. Originally, I thought it would be a quick read but it took a little more time than originally planned. It’s definitely worth reading.
This is an outstanding book that one can have close at hand to read time and time again. It deals with what makes some people successful and others not. A Message to Garcia is one of the greatest best-selling inspirational essays written in 1899 by Elbert Hubbard. It has been made into two motion pictures.
There are some people who come hell or high water will get it done. Then they 19re others who have excuses of why it cannot be done. You have to have courage, tenacity and the will to win. The Marine Corps has always had that and that is why 1CA Message to Garcia 1D has been told to every Marine Corps class for over 100 years.
"A Message to Garcia" stresses the importance of those who can be trusted to get the job done when time is short and the stakes are high. It teaches that extraordinary opportunities come to those who develop the right attitudes, habits, and instincts to accomplish missions quickly and efficiently, with minimum oversight.
Therefore it is a booklet that you should have close to you to read before going to sleep after saying your prayers. It is also a great bit of information to start the day when you have been struggling with a problem that has you in a quagmire of in action. In all problems the problem lies in getting started. Many people never do so they fail before they even get started.
So when the question or order come to get "A Message to Garcia" you will not hesitate or cloud the issues with idiotic questions or excuses because you will be well on your way to deliver the message. The question now is can you do it? Yes, the future lies in your hands!
I wanted to do more with this book than I did. I wanted to read the Scriptures that he referenced. But, I read this book during a long, long wait in the doc's office, and I was struck with DeStefano's examples. They weren't examples I could really relate to, in thought or knowing of these examples.
I tried to think of life situations in which the 10 different prayers would apply, and I think the overall theme are on target. And I do agree the prayer God answers immediately is "God, make me an instrument...".
Wonderful book on prayer. Good for a wide spectrum of people from those that are searching or don't know to those who want to learn how to strengthen their current prayer life. There were two spots in the book that I had questions / concerns about the authors writings although they aren't big enough to cause major concern.
Great book with a simple approach to prayers that God will always answer in the affirmative.
This was good. It is different from the spiritual books I usually read. I tend to read the mystics whose message you need to ponder deeply. This book is simple and not laden down with over-your-head theological concepts. Each chapter relates to a different life circumstance and the author lays out a prayer that relates. What makes this book unique is that the prayers come from a perspective that the general and/or overwhelmed mind tends to overlook.
I was an ex-Christian, but missed God and longed for life with Him again when this book came across my path. I couldn't put it down. Before I finished it, I said the prayer to be of service to someone. The very next day, a friend I hadn't heard from in years contacted me to ask me for help with something. I've believed in God ever since. And since then, I've had many miraculous experiences when praying to be of service.
This book is very special to me. And I know Jesus lives.
Not bad; I read it in fits and starts, and actually enjoyed it best that way. Some bits I definitely thought... unsubstantiated, but I also found it profound in places. Enough to even blog about at one point! It's the sort of book I will probably pick up and read bits again from time to time.
The best kind of book: simple but profound; tells you something old and makes it new again.
God... 1. Show me that you exist 2. Make me an instrument 3. Outdo me in generosity 4. Get me through this suffering 5. Forgive me 6. Give me peace 7. Give me courage 8. Give me wisdom 9. Bring good out of this bad situation (Rom 8:28) 10. Lead me to my destiny
I'm not sure why I picked up this audio book, at the library, but it was so helpful to me. (I listen to audio books during my daily commute.) Sometimes you hear exactly what you need to hear during certain times of your life and this book spoke to me. Divine intervention? I think so. Mr. DeStefano is a wise and insightful man.
