Ryohgo Narita (成田 良悟, Narita Ryōgo) is a Japanese light novelist. He won the Gold Prize in the 9th Dengeki Novel Prize for Baccano!, which was made into a TV anime in 2007.[1] His series Durarara!! was also made into a TV anime, which began airing January 2010

There are two traits found in most of Narita's works:
* Narita writes extremely fast, one volume a month if he wishes - with tons of spelling errors and missing words as a tradeoff. The editors like to leave them sometimes just for fun, though.
* His work titles often have an exclamation mark at the end (i.e. Baccano!, Vamp!, Durarara!!, etc.).

Kanji names: 成田 良悟 & 成田良悟.

"Trivial things that you did in the past can turn the lives of others insane. It happens all the time."

I was hoping I would be really into this arc, after the stories of the high school kids and the day off story I thought we would get something meaty. In a way, we did. This story will span two volumes and focuses on the Blue Squares, Toramaru, The Dollars and Russian gangsters. I’m just…not into it. The story is action packed and high stakes but it fails to feel charming.

I couldn’t care less about Vorona and Slon, the two Russian killers for hire who feature a lot in this volume. Vorona has an interesting way of speaking but I’m not invested in her story. Slon is sort of bland compared to Narita’s other characters.

I also don’t care for Mikado’s POV or storylines that centre on him so that was another loss for this volume. There’s a lot of focus on how Mikado feels about The Dollars and his relationship with Aoba. I don’t really have any stakes in how Mikado feels and as a character he doesn’t really have any personality traits that I could tell you. Mikado can move whatever way the plot takes him because it doesn’t feel like he has many motivations.

The art was phenomenal, as always, but it felt like this volume had less than usual. There were some stand out pages – but not even one for every major character to appear in. There could have definitely been a few more considering how short the page count of this book was.

The thing that saved this volume from being a total disappointment was Shinra’s chapters. I loved how they were written in just a stream of his speech. His relationship with Celty and quirky personality are so much the heart of Durarara!! so it was nice to see him get some focus. I definitely hope future volumes put more focus on Izaya/Shizuo/Shinra. I loved the tiny snippets about their high school life and I think their dynamic is the most interesting of any of the characters.

I also wish there was less reintroduction to the story as well. I understand that when published it would have been a while since readers read the last volume…but it’s excessive. Most readers can remember who a main character was. Or their primary characteristics. A lot of the book is spent just reminding you who the main cast is and what’s happened so far and for a book with under 200 pages that becomes an issue.

I still love this series, it holds a special place in my heart. I know there are storylines I’ll be more invested in coming up…but this volume just didn’t quite do it for me.

Okay, I give up trying to keep all the plot threads straight. Narita manages to pack a plot as complex as a Wheel of Time novel into a mere 200 pages. I mean, here we have Simon and his boss giving shelter to an assassin who's hunting a Russian arms dealer who's trying to take out Celty who are protecting a yakuza princess who is trying to kill Shizuo, who ... and that's not even half the plot. The biker gang from the previous volume is back, the yakuza is starting to take a hand, Anri becomes a target, Mikado's having one of his periodic crises about what to do with the Dollars, and Izaya is is plotting, plotting, plotting.

The biggest drawback to this volume is it only tells half the story, and the ending is a huge cliffhanger for volume 6 (which thankfully does have an English version floating around the web).

Awesome as always. The twisted story is getting more and more exciting. Kind of lost for words, so I don't think I can spill out any spoilers or comments or sort. But just for y'all know, the game has just begun! Coming up next shall be a devil, remorless Izaya, and he'll ravage the whole city, for sure.
Ikebukuro is sinking deep in the darkness of carnage, vandalism and revenge, and yet the city is emanating its sparks of excitement. But c'mon, that freakishness is characteristic of Ikebukuro, so it's fine, right? I'll be gladly watching it throbbing with all vivacity.
No other fun is equal to that when I read this LN. Big claps of commend for Narita-sensei.

This book is the first of a two-part story arc that concludes in book #6, so be warned that you will want book #6 ready before you start this one. The interactions between different groups of people is getting even more complex, which is what makes this author's stories so interesting to me. I didn't care as much for the two new Russian characters, and they had a huge amount of page time in this book and in book #6, but I really do like how Mikado is evolving--manipulated by Izaya--and also how Anri is changing in subtle ways.

1st part of a 2 volume book. We only get about 6 new characters this time, and the whole thing is still as complex as ever. The 4 new Russian characters are super funny and it's cool to get a bit more Mikado focus as he hasn't really been fundamental to the story since the 1st book. Eager to pick up volume 6 ASAP :D

Also I really don't like Voronas character I love those new Russian characters, and the story just is getting more and more complex... hopefully poor Anri will make it out without damage, I think she is quite cute ...
But I am also cheering for Izaya to be successful, nothing goes over that sociopathic info-troll

"En résumé, un tome qui m'a déçue. Des personnages assez fades par rapport à avant. Une intrigue qui part dans tous les sens et qui tourne en rond. Ma joie de chaque tome est retombée comme un soufflé. Malheureusement, je ne poursuivrai pas ma lecture de cette saga..."

Good continuation of the story. New characters are introduced that add to the story well.

A good continuation with a good blend of old and new characters, and old and new situations.

New and old characters collide in this latest arc of Durarara!!

The New:
- A younger classman with sketchy intentions and is shaping up to be an Izaya 2.0 (just don't say that to his face)
- A ladies' man with surprising martial prowess out to settle the score against the gang who caused trouble on his home turf
- A Russian assassin, as highly skilled as she is naive, searching desperately for the limits of human while taking jobs in Ikebukuro that inadvertently stir the pot and make the city writhe in chaos
- A little girl who is dead set on murdering the strongest man in Ikebukuro

The Old:
- A timid boy who is the leader of a colorless gang that grows more unruly by the day
- A parasite who is forcibly dragged from her peaceful life into the extraordinary by a visit in the night
- A headless courier who searches for a VIP of the local Yakuza syndicate while avoiding arrest charges and murder attempts
- A fighting puppet finding himself inexplicably in the center of it all

Each character collides within this volume, battling on a mental and physical front as they try to impose their ideals, lead their teams, protect those they love, maintain their peace, or just try to survive. All while interspersed with charming little asides by our very own morally bankrupt black market doctor.

Also in this volume are: the mangling of the Japanese language, vague warnings from a familiar username, highly modified stun guns, voraciously devoured novels, kidnapping a girl (on accident), facial restructuring via metal cabinets, anti-material rifles fired on city streets, People Honor's Award performances, and doorbells coated in blood.

3 stars instead of the usual 4 or 5 because the fifth volume is only part one of the mid series story arc and too many pages are wasted reintroducing the characters to the reader.
