"You've got to understand that [we] didn't really go to the same school. I mean, for you this place was all laughing and joking and deciding which boys to date. For me, it was four years of keeping my head down, and doing my best not to get the **** kicked out of me." -- Peter Parker, speaking to an attractive former classmate at their 10th high school reunion
I don't claim it to be an original thought, but I believe Spider-Man's durability as a superhero and/or protagonist is rooted in the semi-plausible real-world problems and complications that are routinely thrown in his way . . . and how, sooner or later, he comes out swinging. There are obstacles aplenty in this involving and improved follow-up volume - not the least of which is that his beloved Aunt May is still missing, likely kidnapped by an unidentified foe - including a $5 million bounty on his head (for revealing his secret identity), violently jealous classmates at a reunion (when they realize Peter Parker has married former model Mary Jane Watson), and the reappearance of his adversary Venom, who strikes in the midst of said gathering. Pleasingly, there's still time for compassion in a quiet moment when a night-shift diner waitress offers kindness and a bit of conversation to our title character, and he is able to later respond with an anonymous helping hand. Bring on volume 3!
Just a few words to set the tone here. Frank Cho and Terry Dodson art. Mary Jane. The Black Cat. Hubba. Hubba. Now on to the review...
I'm a little torn about this one. Eddie Brock has decided to turn over a new leaf, and therefore is auctioning the Venom symbiote off to the highest bidder. I didn't really think it was that easy to get rid of, but apparently so. He plans to then donate the money to charity. So this aging gangster buys the symbiote for his under achieving son so he can finally make something of himself. Needless to say, things dont turn out the way they expect...
There's a few other storylines going on. Someone has kidnapped Aunt May, and the same person is offering a ten million reward for Spiderman's identity. Neither of these are resolved in this volume, however.
Oh, and as I mentioned earlier. Frank Cho and Terry Dodson drawing Mary Jane and the Black Cat. That's worth the price of admission alone...
I enjoyed it, but I liked Venom best back in the McFarlane and Larson days. Still worth checking out.
This volume features Mary Jane and Felicia Hardy. I must say those poor girls' backs must be hurtin' somethin' awful given all that weight they're packing up front. Surely the artist didn't have to me 'em THAT big. Other than that, there's maybe too much drama and too little action, but still a reasonable read. Too bad it's uncharacteristically heavy on the text.
Parker's aunt May is still missing. On top of that, Peter finds that MJ and his bank account is drier than he thought. Worse, Jonah Jameson is offering a $5 million reward for Spider-Man's identity, which makes Peter a target for greedy men in the police, as well as supervillains high and low.
A Mark Millar book about Venom with art by Frank Cho just didn't sound like my idea of a good time. Particularly when it's roughly around the time of Extreme Ultimate I'm So Edgy Mark Millar was on his way to becoming unbearably Shitlord. But this story, about Eddie Brock selling the Venom Symbiote because he's dying of cancer, and wants the money to go to charity had a great premise and was, right up until the end, well-plotted and a fun read.
If you take into count that Millar's Shock Epilogue was immediately retconned, as he must have known it would be, you're left with not only a solid Spider-Man/Venom story but one that future creative teams can expand on without just repeating the same tired Venom arc.
This was good enough that, at some point, I'm going to have to sit down and read the full Millar Marvel Knights Spider-Man run. The Peter Parker story that envelopes the Venom arc looked very intriguing.
This second volume of Millar's Spider-Man run made a bit more sense given the setup in the first volume but still takes Spider-Man in a rather weird direction. I suppose you could say it is all very "Millar-esque" in town, which is what you come for with a work like this, but at the same time, it may be too Millar to be truly Spider-Man. All the beats are there in terms of his friends and family being in danger and villains popping out left and right but on the whole, it still felt a little off.
Then there's the whole Venom angle to things, which was the focus of this book. I was always rather curious as to how the transition from Eddie Brock to the next Venom host would go and had not realized it would be covered in this series. This first part was still a little wonky given who ended up getting the suit but perhaps things will become clearer in volume 3.
A very wordy and sluggish second volume. There's some steam picked up in the second half but not enough.
I think the fact Millar writes Peter as extremely hot headed is odd. Peter can be, and he has been, but here he's always shouting or angry. And I get his Aunt is missing but he's had this happen before and figured out a plan. Here he feels lost all the time, and it doesn't build tension, it makes Peter look dumb.
But the venom stuff is interesting enough and there are touching moments like the diner scene. A 3 out of 5.
Aunt May is still missing and in danger, if not dead, and life still hasn't gotten any easier for Peter. There's a reward for figuring out his identity, MJ has been hiding money problems from him, something odd is going on with Doctor Octopus, and to top it all off Eddie Brock is auctioning off Venom to the highest bidder. There's a lot going on and the storyline still has plenty of momentum.
Oh I liked this more than I thought I was going to? There were just some beautiful panels when he was fighting Venom. And now I'm invested. I need to know what happened to Aunt May!
Eddie Brock auctions off the Venom symbiote, allowing for the Spider-Man mythos to evolve into new arenas - and old villains get a much-needed upgrade. While initially seen as a possible throw-away story, Gargan's turn as Venom becomes a powerful plot point for he Marvel Universe.
