I loved learning about Football from Howie Long. Growing up I had no clue he had a 13 year career as a dominant defensive lineman for the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders. He earned eight Pro Bowl selections, won Super Bowl 18. I knew him more from his small post Hollywood career from all the movies my Dad took me to. Broken Arrow (1996)
Firestorm (1998)
3000 Miles (2001) to Graceland with Kevin Costner & Kurt Russel. A notable supporting actor role, his character Jack a trusted contact to Kevin Costner’s character Murph. He provides the heist crew with equipment, suits, the layout of the robbery plan, and the getaway Helicopter. Later in the film he secures additional reinforcement firepower Hamilton played by (Ice T)

I also knew Terry from his (PSA) for the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation charity campaign. Throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s, the FOX NFL Sunday Crew including Terry Bradshaw, James Brown, and Jimmy Johnson routinely filmed humorous, theatrical "movie policy" and charity trailers that played in major theater chains during the summer months. They would sit in movie theater seats holding popcorn, acting out a sketch about theater etiquette (like turning off cell phones) before pivoting to the annual fundraising drive. At the end of the trailer, the crew would ask audiences to donate money to "help find a cure" for a major disease. Howie Long would then deadpan, reach over, rub Terry Bradshaw's bald head, and joke that maybe they would finally find a cure for "male pattern baldness" instead. This joke hits differently now after getting older and starting to loose my hair at 16. And as sit here and write this I can help but snicker after getting a fresh cut thinking why haven’t they cured that yet!!!😂

Back to the Book:

A great combination of the rules of the game and the historical references that led to why those rules exist.

The book itself is always a conversation piece having it in hand at the doctors office or coffee shop there always somebody who’d see it, snicker, and ask have you learned anything yet. Sometimes that would lead into a stranger sharing something they enjoyed about the game. Whether it was that they played themselves or witnessed a game live in the company of family and friends that will always hold a special place in their hearts.

My favorite memory will be having the book with me on a trip back home to Michigan staying separately with both my Uncle’s (Dads older Brothers) having them see the book and learn about there times playing Quarterbacks. Then the huff and puff we weren’t any good coach picks up because we could read the playbooks. “But Your Uncle Mike, he was a Fullback he was incredible and won state with his team”.

I would have never have gotten those stories without this book building the connections. I will always remember fondly them flipping through pages on a Sunday/Monday NFL game to double check something that just happened.
