A silent comic, although there are a lot of dialogue bubbles but filled with symbols and not words.
Ivan Brun draws short figures with big heads so it seems pretty cutesy but the content is very dark. "Falsely naive graphics" as the blurb states. Here we're shown a bunch of short stories in a lower class first-world setting (France I believe - where Ivan Brun resides).
The concept of "no comment" is great. Ivan Brun shows these mostly horrific stories but doesn't share his own moral judgement, just letting it sit with the reader.
We see scenes of rape, power dynamics, poverty, drugs, gang violence, police violence. Most feature people suffering under poor economic conditions.
Bumped up from a 3 to a 4. It's a unique comic with some lasting imagery.
It feels a bit like Joan Cornella's brand of nihilism but leans into the dramatic and less humorous.
As far as criticism - I felt like there was a dedication to it being silent to keep the really cool title but it I really hate the symbolic dialogue. I think it would have been stronger with (sparse) dialogue. Some of the stories get a bit hard to follow, and just some minimal narration or dialogue would have solved that.
There are no words in this graphic novel, the images do all the talking and they speak volumes. The art style may initially look cutesy but the themes here are dark and depressing, Ivan paints the pages with the brutalities and suffering of the world. This was a quick read that won't be to everyone's taste and will leave you thinking nihilistic thoughts long after you've finished.
Francuski punkowiec w komiksie bez słów bezlitośnie punktuje wszystkie najciemniejsze strony i ohydztwa gatunku człowieczego.

AVOID this if you don't want to be disgusted. It's a bunch of GRIM stories, with zero gross-out filter, about the lowest "economic classes" being ravaged in the worst kind of ways by the wealthy and others who have various forms of power.
It's an eye opener to those who are in denial about how bad things really are outside of the world that their parents, and the trajectory that their privilege afforded, kept them from realizing.
Annoyingly, it's one of those wordless that actually take me longer to read because I need to understand so many things that are not being told through phylactere. The best one took me what felt like ten minutes per page- only to end abruptly without me being able to understand how it ended.
The art is interesting and works well for the subject material somehow.
I always find myself reading these types of comics- ones that aim to represent the violence/issues in our society with extremely graphic imagery- heavily coated with nostalgia and the devastating awareness that these shocking images are our reality- images such as these might be the only way to leave a lasting impression- make the reader desire more knowledge on the topics addressed. However, I felt at times that there was violence for violence's sake without a powerful underlying message- this was a bit of a turn off and made it a hard for me to stick with it and finish the collection. I wouldn't really recommend this book to anyone unless I knew they enjoyed this specific kind of illustration.
Cutesy, chibi-styled art used to tell pretty dark and depressing stories about urban life. Some of these seem ironic, and a few of them do have ironic punchlines at the end, but a lot of these end without any kind of ironic twist, as just another day in somebody's miserable life. thought-provoking read, certainly not for kids.
Pinocchio, Beautiful Darkness, Pim and Francie: The Golden Bear Days або Abandon the Old in Tokyo
