Eli 5 Stone

12 books
Eli 5 Stone is a renowned illustrator, writer and creative talent whose freelance career gained global attention when he took over duties as the sole writer, penciler, and inker for The Tick comic book, in succession from The Tick’s creator. He has composed images for the autobiographies of both Tommy Lee and Eminem, and worked extensively for film company Artisan Entertainment. He’s written for the screen, collateral advertising pamphlets and radio spots, and has led/supported numerous advertising campaigns.

Eli 5 continues to grow his branding and commercial illustration expertise, with clients such as Honeywell Technologies, Westin Hotels, and Red Robin Restaurants, but still enjoys working with clients on a more individual and intimate level such as a parent wanting a special drawing for their child. In his spare time, he is a sculptor, animator, and prolific photographer.

Eli lives in Topsfield, Massachusetts with his wife and two children.
His current illustrated novel, BRICKMANNIGAN: PUBLIC DICK, is in its final stages of completion. It will then be turned into a radio play style audiobook.

I'm rather torn... On the one hand I like the attempts at continuity with Edlund's run, with throwaway details and lost plot threads, as well as the "absurd dramedy" tone. I also like how at the end Arthur gets to be a hero, and you get a glimpse of the importance of their partnership. Art was great, and the ending of Luny Bin had really great moments.

On the other hand, especially in the first part there are a lot of references to not wanting to be a "sissy" or "like a girl", and while I realize this is in some respects just a dated 90s thing, it's also jarring from a characterization standpoint! This is not something that Tick and Arthur have been concerned about before, as they're already way outside social conventions and Tick doesn't exactly have a great grip on what's normal. Also, the whole escape from a mental institution plot is not something that needed to be revisited, especially as it didn't go anywhere or reveal much interesting information anyway.

336 page version. This is the most rounded of the graphic novels so far, no real loose ends and it ties together many characters and stories from previous authors.

This book collect Eli Stone's well-regarded run on the Tick collecting The Tick's Back #0, Big Blue Destiny #1-5, The Luny Bin Trilogy Preview and then the whole Luny Bin Trilogy.

"The Tick's Back" is a nice one shot setting up Stone's run with Author and the Tick battling Toy De Force.

The entire run of "Big Blue Destiny" is typical Tick mayhem but with a far stronger story arc built in than you'd see in typical Tick comics. The Tick battles an art-based villain in Issue 1, enters in arm-wresting competition in Issue 2, in Issue 3, he and Arthur travel to an island which is based on honoring Martin Van Buren. In Issue 4, they go into Court to face judgment for the damage done in Issue 1, and then in Issue 5, the story focuses on the true villain behind it all: an art museum curator who wants Arthur's moth suit so he can take over the world.

The Luny Bin trilogy is a fun Tick universe event as the Tick returns to the insane asylum from which he came. Now, all the sides of the story don't touch with the part of the story about Chairface Chippendale and Barry Hubris (formerly known as the Tick) not actually touching the main plot with the Tick and other characters, I have to tip my hat to Stone. He goes back to the original Tick continuity that Ben Edlund made up when he was 18 and completely ignored thereafter. Stone revisits it and reveals some mysteries and tells a good story to boot.

Overall, Stone is in the same league as Ben Edlund, the Tick's creator, which is high praise indeed. If one wants to say Tick comics are "important" (I know a dubious claim at best) than this is probably more important to understanding the character's history that Karma Tornado. And it's not only "important," it's a lot of fun and a great read for those who loved the comics and the cartoon.

Not as good as the Edlund Tick stories, but way better than no Tick at all.
