Archer wrote two versions of this book.In the first one,Ted Kennedy was the fictional president against whom an assassination plot was being hatched.

Later,Archer wrote the second version. In this one,Florentyna Kane becomes the first female president of the US and now she is the target of the assassins.

It is an action packed thriller in which the president herself, makes very brief appearances.

The story centres around FBI agent,Mark Andrews. The FBI finds an injured man who claims to have heard about an assassination plot. But very soon, the man is dead and so are two FBI agents.

The president wants to introduce a gun control bill in the US,and someone dislikes the idea enough to want to kill her. There are seven days in which to foil the plot.

This is a page turner with non-stop action.
Gun related violence continues unabated in the US and gun control laws are not likely to see the light of day, despite all the massacres that have taken place.

The book can be read as a standalone. It is not exactly Kane and Abel # 3.

Book 3 in the Kane & Able series published 1977

A short but entertaining 4 star read.

The newly sworn in, first female American, President has made a promise to the American people that her first priority as the president will be to overhaul the nations guns laws.

For a lot of people this is long overdue but there are a few powerful and wealthy people whose empires will crumble should this happen. Having tried everything they can think of legally, and failed, these powerful people have turned to the final solution, the President has to be taken care of, permanently.

By pure luck the FBI get wind of this plot to kill the President and the dilemma that faces them is ‘should the President be told’?
The main problem in all this is that the agent who has all the inside information is a rookie and rookies, as everyone knows, talk a lot of BS.

What follows is a tense, entertaining game of cat and mouse.

At just a couple of hundred pages this tale start on page one and with no time for meandering gets you to the point pretty quickly.

This was a disappointing ending to this series. I was expecting a lot more after Kane and Abel and then The Prodigal Daughter. Florentyna is practically non-existent in this book as the story focuses around an attempt to assassinate her and what the secret service is trying to do to stop it. The book itself was pretty good and I think that I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I hadn't been setup by the two previous books in the series. Overall a fun read though and I plan to read some more from Jeffrey Archer.

I came across this book recently but I forgot it was first published in 1977. It is an exciting political thriller.....a real page turner. And yet the scenario could fall right into the politics of 2020 ! The first woman President , Florentyna Kane is attempting to get passed, an important gun control law . Little does she know that a Senator and some criminals will stop at nothing to get the law to fail......including the assassination of the President.
This is a non-stop thriller which could easily fall into the scenario of the present political climate......except this administration would let anyone who wants to own a gun have access to one. The FBI is in the middle of the case and will do anything to stop the assassination.
Enjoy ! One of the cute things Archer brings to this book is that some of the people are real people ou know from the world of politics !

It’s a page turner novel. This book forms the final part of the Kane and Abel series. All though one can treat it as a completely different book. This is a sequel to "Prodigal Daughter", but you don't have to read it as this book is self contained.
In this sequel, Kane becomes the President and the how an attempt on her life is saved by a rookie FBI agent, when all the others who know about this dies.
This is about a plot to assassinate the US President and a rookie FBI who with the chief of FBI works to prevent it.
The book is obviously set in Washington DC and there is a map at the start of the book. Archer does refer to the real-life organizations and political hierarchy but it all seemed quite vague and at times confusing to me, especially as we never find out the identity of the mysterious Chairman masterminding the assassination plot.
Well etched characters, plausible plot, racy action. You just can't stop reading.

A rookie agent has to stop the assassination of the President. So this book wasn't bad so much as ridiculous. It was written a long time ago about the future 43rd president, then updated and published again after there had been a real 43rd president. I really think I might have liked it had I read it in 1977 or something. But it was just surreal, and not in a good way, to read someone's vision of the 2000s. He got to first female president, but didn't quite think of the internet. So the hero is just doing all his research at the library with a stack of quarters from a pay phone. On an unrelated note, even if the technology had been updated, I just really got angry at the hero's passionate love for the heroine aka a possible accomplice of the assassin. The deal was that they met and he just fell too head over heels and believed so much in love and his right to love that he couldn't stay away from her for the 6 days to the presumptive assassination. I wonder if it's annoying to me because it really is annoying or because in the post-2001 world nothing like that seems believable (just like pay phones).

I'm so disappointed in the way how this series has ended.

There's no story of Florentyna unless how the secret service trying to figure out the assassination.
This story would have been great if it was not the third in the Kane and Abel series but just a standalone.

Entertaining and suspenseful! However, it is not a serious political thriller, nor is is really Kane and Abel #3. While the story revolves around the attempted assassination of President Kane, she plays a minor role in the narrative. There are too many implausible events and unanswered questions in this quick and easy read. There is excitement and razor tension from the first page, but it loses that cutting edge to the point that the climax is anti-climactic. The denouement is flat as well. It is a disappointing and anti-climactic ending to a great series.

I bought the book after I read a review which claimed this to be far better than "Day of the Jackal" by Frederick Forsyth. Well... I was terribly disappointed. The book was not even close to "The Eleventh Commandment" by the same author. The hero finds time to date his girlfriend even though he has to foil an assassination plot to kill the American President in matter of few days!

This is the final book of a trilogy. It can be read as a stand alone. In this one, there is a plan to kill the president because she supports a gun control bill. The FBI race to discover who is behind the conspiracy to kill the president.

This was a lousy way to finish this trilogy. The first two books were excellent. The only positive I can take away from this novel is it tackling the issue of gun control. The author accomplished this without preaching. He expressed both sides concerns and why it is an issue today. I especially liked this since this was written many years ago. Besides that this book did not have anything going for it. First of all, it was not a "Kane & Abel" novel. The character used from those books was used as a gimmick attempting to tie in this book with the others. Secondly, the investigation had its flaws. It was boring and the turns were a stretch with some of its plot holes. There was one time I actually groaned out loud.

This book had the right idea but it never executed them to be satisfactory. I liked the issue but it was not enough to deem this a worthy read. It was false advertising and I recommend stopping after the second book of this trilogy.

This started out as Jeffrey Archer's second published novel, quite a few years ago, but has now been updated for more current politics. Try to find the original version, because it is vintage early Archer. In the original version, the novel begins just after Ed Kennedy is sworn in as president after Jimmy Carter. It was a rough time in American history, and Archer weaves the mood of the times into the story. The plot revolves around a junior FBI agent's investigation into an assassination attempt against the new president. He juggles a new relationship with the daughter of a senator who just happens to be a prime suspect in the conspiracy. Archer demonstrates his US political expertise here, despite being an Englishman. This novel goes behind the scenes of Washington DC, though not nearly to the extent his later novel, First Among Equals, does in London's Parliament. My only real complaint with the novel is its lack of major plot twists which I've come to expect from Archer's works. Pretty straight forward story. If you enjoy Archer's works, try to locate a copy of this one too.

The first book in this trilogy — Kane & Abel — was about the story of two diverse boys from their birth to mid-age and how different events led them to success as well as hatred for each other. It was, as I've written in the review, one of the best books I've ever read, and I gave it 5 stars.

The second — The Prodigal Daughter — was about the rise of Abel's daughter first as a student, then a businesswoman and finally as a politician. I gave it 4 stars.

Unfortunately, this book turned out to be a FBI suspense thriller and I've read much better FBI/CIA thrillers. Also, there are just too many inconsistencies, especially when it refers to events in The Prodigal Daughter. There are also glaring errors: such as the Secret Service being called Secret Police.

I bought this book on my kindle before I read the reviews on it. From what I now understand it was changed and updated from the original version of the hardback that was published in the 1970's. It has been a very long time since I read the first two books in this series "Kane and Abel" and "The Prodigal Daughter" but I was expecting this book to be more about the main character "the president" then it was. Although I liked the book and it was a quick read for me I was hoping to enjoy it more than I did. I'm still giving it four stars because Jeffrey Archer is a great author.

Worum geht´s?

(2.5 / 5)

I had read this book about 7 or 8 years back when I was in school, and I was so thrilled! I thought that it was an underrated roller coaster. But after reading it again now I realize how wrong I was! It isn't a particularly bad book, but it has a lot of plot holes, in addition to being very unrealistic. The protagonist works like a newbie, not like a Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The criminals are hardly "professional" as oft mentioned in the book. And after having recently read the amazing American Tabloid by James Ellroy, Shall We Tell the President pales in comparison.

And I would also like to rant against the new edition that continues the story from The Prodigal Daughter. WHY, ARCHER, WHY? I prefer the one that did not have Kane as the President. It definitely made more sense and her presence in this book looks clearly forced.

They say most criminals are caught because of one, decisive mistake. With that in mind, I wonder how many assassination plots are discussed in clear and certain terms casually over lunch within earshot of the wait staff and other patrons. Not many? Yeah, I didn't think so either.

Also, considering the entire purpose of the rubout was to stall a bill on gun control (one which specifically limits criminal access to firearms), was having a criminal use an illegal firearm on the POTUS really the best strategy? Something tells me that would only hasten such a bill. Aye yai yai.

For what it's worth, the pacing is pretty good and Archer at least keeps you engaged to the end. But that hardly makes up for the nonsensical plot.

This wasn’t my favourite Jeffrey Archer. I did enjoy it, but found it a bit hard to keep track of what was happening. This was possibly related to the fact that I was reading it in circumstances where I was somewhat distracted by scenery and other people, but I can think of other Archers that would require less concentration.

I did still enjoy it - I just had to relax a bit more and not try to keep tabs on what was happening exactly and go with the flow!!

Interesting... I read this book years ago and brought it back out... it was published in 1977 and revised in 1986. English author. I was taken aback this time around by the undertones of racism, sexism, and blatant nods and subtle digs against gays. Really interesting all these years later to re-read and be slightly taken aback while at other times absolutely appalled. I think I can put it to bed for good and never miss it.

Mình than thở thế thôi chứ quyển sách vẫn rất hay nhé. Plot twist xây dựng hợp lý và thật sự khiến người đọc không thể ngừng dõi theo cuộc điều tra của đặc vụ Mark .

This third novel in the Kane & Abel series is definitely not what I expected. Technically, it's about Florentyna Kane--a plot to kill her is afoot--but she's hardly in the story. This could have been a stand-alone novel in which bad guys plot to kill the POTUS. I can't help but wonder why Archer chose that to go in that direction.

To be honest I wasn't sure if this was a 2 or 3 star book but after running it through CAWPILE it was a 2 star. This wasn't necessarily a terrible book, the plot was...okay ish (like basically your standard action movie but in book form) - but there is a lot of weird internal monologuing that is often bordering on the homophobic, racist, and sexist/predatory. Its fine if a character has these internal beliefs, but they are never challenged and they are dropped so casually throughout the second half of the book, it doesn't make sense. This is also another thing that bothers me, the first and second halves of the books seem to be written in 2 extremely different styles, to the point where I even wonder if Archer spend like 9 months writing the first half and woke up one day and realized "fuck I need to deliver this book tomorrow"and downed 2 cans of Energy drinks and typed the rest out in 12 hours, and because he needed to get more words he decided "okay I'm randomly going to make Mark really really concerned about being too black or looking gay or behave like a predator" but not even only that - he does all of this in Bullet point sentences that feels like the author just didn't have enough time to write out all the sentences and he just decided to remove the bullet points and just stick all the sentences back to back with full stops.

Another thing I want to point out is that this book is nothing at all like the first two books in the series. The first two books are two really interesting strategic novels, the first is more leaning towards personal history and business and it follows 2 characters who come from very different backgrounds, the second follows one of their daughters as she tries to become the first female president of the united states. These books were both really nuanced and brought interesting discussions to the table about a wide array of things - this book did none of that, its like the opposite of that. Its short and uninteresting and lacks everything that made the previous books interesting. To be honest I might not have disliked this book so much if I hadn't read it with the expectation that it was a sequel to two books that I both enjoyed quite a bit, they weren't never favorites but there was a standard I was used to.
