Rwanda: Bradt Travel Guide

Rate this book

‘More impressive even than the gorillas’ size and bearing is their unfathomable attitude to their daily human visitors…almost everybody who visits the gorillas experiences an almost mystical sense of recognition,’ writes Philip Briggs in Bradt’s Rwanda of the country’s most popular residents. Fifteen years on from the tragic genocide of 1994, Rwanda is rapidly emerging as one of Africa’s most exciting ecotourism destinations, with three diverse national parks. Bradt’s Rwanda is the only English-language guidebook dedicated to the country, and this updated fourth edition lists the newest hotels, tours, activities, operators – and, of course, information on how to track its famous mountain gorillas.

The country is safe to visitors and many things have been done to improve Hospitality and Tourism Sector in Rwanda. I am a tour guide in Rwanda and no even single visitor get a problem while he/she is on our land. Feel free to visit and for sure the best things wait you.

Generally useful though now a bit outdated. I would have liked it if the guide mentioned that Rwanda is currently run via dictatorship and has been for awhile, however. Generally this means the country is very safe for tourists - the level of violent crime is very low - but it also means you should try to remember that open criticism of the government is something that can get you deported if you're a foreigner and I didn't ask what becomes of citizens.

Great resource if you're planning a trip to Rwanda - I usually choose LP over any other travel guide book, but LP's coverage of Rwanda is short and within it's full length Africa travel book. I was happy with the Philip, Briggs guide. Really helpful in learning about gorilla trekking (what to expect, what to wear, descriptions of gorilla groups and hikes, cost, etc).

Janice Booth does an excellent job with this guide. Her personal experience with the country is evidence throughout the book.
