Sujatha
303 books1,371 followersSujatha was the allonym of the Tamil author S. Rangarajan, Author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.
As an engineer, he supervised the design and production of the electronic voting machine (EVM) during his tenure at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a machine which is currently used in elections throughout India. As an author he inspired many authors, including Balakumaran, Madhan.

I can never, ever, ever over state the brilliance of our legend Sujatha.
Some of the parts of Kanayaazhiyin.. were written 50 years ago and it's still damn relevant.
He has written about Steve Jobs in the 1980s, he typed his Tamil works in Macintosh systems(that too in 80s).Some of His essays are a "Bitch, Please " to all those who brag about their fluency in English and feel embarrassed about reading local language books.
For those who don't know, Kanayaazhi is a small scale Tamil literary magazine aimed at preserving the contemporary literature scenario. This book, Kanayaazhiyin Kadaisi Pakkangal (Kanayaazhi's last pages) is the compilation of Sujatha's essays in Kanayaazhi from 1965 to 1990.
Its astonishing that almost everything that he had predicted about future has turned out right and you learn to stop being surprised by his powers.
From Tholkappiyam to Puranaanooru to Haikoos, the writings about his literature interests are absolutely delightful to read. Nobody would dare take his stance that it's natural for a language to change over time and that it's Okay if the Tamil we use right now is not entirely pure. After reading Kanayaazhiyin... it may not be intriguing if you feel the need to start reading Puranaanooru. And do try it. He himself has written a book called: Puranaanooru oru eliya arimugam.
Whats the most surprising about KKP is his appreciation of his contemporary writers and poets. He appreciates good literature when he reads one and there's no room for partiality about the poet or anything else.
Cinema,Ancient Tamil, jokes, technology, science.. Name anything and he has written about it. The sense of humor in all his writings is dazzling.
His accurate observation about the cultural deterioration in Japan is totally fitting the current scenario in India.
How I wish he could've still lived with us. His death was the single most magnificent loss to Tamil in the 21st century. How I wish this book had many more sequels.

Undoubtedly a 5 star deserving Sujatha Book.
This collection of pieces, 'Kanayazhi's Last Pages' contains 192 pieces of Sujatha's reviews, commentaries, discussions, speeches opinions, translations, essays and even few poetry.
(Kanayazhi is a literary magazine.)
This gives the overall impression about a man whose knowledge base has both breadth and depth.
Sujatha is a multifaceted, mega talented scientific writer, who had a love for the language unmotivated by any political or economic reasons. His criticisms of movies, and poems shows how far fetched his thinking was during those times. Essays start from 1965 and end in 1998.
Over a period of 33 years, his writing style is always distinct, fresh and fast paced.
The final 130 pages of this 540 pages book is pure gem. His quality essays can be surpassed only by him.
There are places where he uses a pen name like 'Srirangam SR' and criticises his own works :-D

I am ceaselessly amazed by his wit, humour, vision, thinking and extraordinary writing talent.
One helluva' book. Recommeneded for anyone interested in knowing a great personality's vivid thoughts or anyone interested in reading about Tamil Literature commentaries and essays.

சுஜாதா கணையாழி இதழின் இறுதிப்பக்கத்தில் எழுதிய சிறு கட்டுரைகளின் தொகுப்பு. கவிதைகள், திரைவிமர்சனங்கள், இலக்கிய விமர்சனங்கள், பயணக் குறிப்புகள் என பல்சுவை அம்சங்களை உள்ளடக்கியதாக இருப்பினும் வாசிக்கும் போது 30 வருடங்களுக்கு மேற்பட்ட கால இடைவெளியினை நன்றாகவே உணர முடிந்தது.
ஹைக்கூ பற்றிய குறிப்புகள், கவிதைகள் மற்றும் சமகால தமிழ் கவிஞர்கள் பற்றிய சில குறிப்புகள் என்னை கவர்ந்தன. ஜப்பானியப் பத்திரிகைகள் எல்லாம் கணையாழி போல, கடைசிப்பக்கத்தில் இருந்து படிக்கிறார்கள் என்ற சின்ன தற்புகழ்ச்சி, நெஞ்சு கனப்பதும் கண்கள் குளமாவதும் நம்மை விட்டு அகல இன்னும் இருபது வருடமாகும் போன்ற வரிகள் அழகு.

கணையாழி எனக்குத் தமிழில் பிடித்த வார்த்தைகளில் ஒன்று.
ஏதோ ஓர் அர்த்தமில்லாக் காரணத்தால் இதை வாங்கி படித்தேன். சுஜாதா அந்தக் காலத்தில் எழுதிய கட்டுரைகள் எல்லாம் இருக்கும் புத்தகம்.
எழுபதுகளில் எழுதப்பட்டதாலோ என்னவோ எனக்கு சலுப்பு தட்டியது. தமிழின் கவிதை நடை, உரைநடை பற்றிய அவரது கருத்துகளில் எனக்கு நிறைய ஒத்துப் போகவில்லை. இன்றைய தலைமுறையினர் கடும் போட்டிகள் நிறைந்த உலகில் வாழ்கின்றனர்.எத்தனை திறமை இருந்தும் வாய்ப்பின்றி தவிக்கின்றனர்.
கடைசியில் வரும் ஜப்பான் அனுபவங்கள் மட்டும் தான் சுவாரஸ்யமாக இருந்தன. ஹைக்கூ பற்றிய பக்கங்களும் வாசிக்க நன்றாக இருந்தது. அவ்வளவு தான்.

Not much relatable and not many things were agreeable, mostly because of the immense generation gap and timeline. But ok read, mostly bored me.

This was like reading a newspaper or diary of person written some 40 - 45 years ago. It was interesting and heart warming to read journal collections of that period and imagine what the author tries to say. Some of informations like national award winning movie review, robots in japan, flight crashes, book reviews and information on poems were all lot informative.
Reading it can make u feel good and knowing some makes us go to history for some period of time. Go for it if you want to understand what were innovations and state of art during 70's. It will be interesting read but not a recommended one for all.

33 years of the evolution of the writer is visible in this rare collection of essays. Sujatha is a brave experimenter to say the least. Single handedly popularized the writing in Tamil while effortlessly toggling between literary writing and popular fiction.

ஸ்வாரஸ்யமான எழுத்து . எதைப் பற்றித்தான் எழுதவில்லை. முப்பது வருடங்களில் அந்த அந்தக் காலங்களின் நிகழுவுகள், கவிதை, இலக்கியம், அறிவியல். பெரும்பாலான கட்டுரைகள் உங்களை மேலும் வாசிக்க தூண்டும்.

Really an extra-ordinary book. Sujatha is the lord of tamil short columns. He covers a wide range of topic from literature, arts, movies,science, tamil history and tamil etymology. Must read for those interested in tamil literature.

This is a thought provoking book with lots of humour. Sujatha is always one of a kind. Must read. Say it as a magazine full of sujatha's articles. My personal favourite over sujatha's works.
