Here is the official companion to Francis Ford Coppola's masterful trilogy, revised and updated, and packed with more than 100 photographs. The director was a renegade filmmaker who'd never made a profitable picture. The producer was hired because he could stay below budget. The star had a reputation for being difficult. A formula for disaster? No, the makings of one of the greatest films of all time. The Godfather Legacy explores the fascinating behind-the-scenes intrigue and uproar during the making of all three
There’s no point pretending I can write anything approaching an impartial review of a book about the Godfather films. Well, the first two anyway. I love everything about these films (1 & 2, that is). I first watched them at an early age, I absorbed them, and they have been part of me ever since. This book does nothing to dispel the mythology, it just adds a new layer. Taking the reader chronologically through the making and release of the first film, including loads of details about the people involved in front and behind the camera, with some revealing and some funny stories, and lots of behind-the-scenes photos. The second and third films are dealt with briefly in the final chapter.
One of the best “making of” books out there. If you’re a fan of these films or of filmmaking in general then this book is a must! Loaded with great stories and photos!
The Godfather film series has grown to a status as a cultural icon, a touchstone of life in the commons. The story shines a bit of light into deep places, and does so with rare beauty, grace and a seductive charm that allows us to spend time with people, ideas and emotions we normally avoid. Its international reputation speaks to archetypal truths, not local, not personal.
This book is a detailed exposition of exactly how the film was made. It's a testament to the magic of the Godfather films that we can be allowed to peek--nay, explore--behind the curtain, see the nuts and bolts, and still want to see the magic again.
Like the subject of the book itself, this book can be read and appreciated at several levels. It provides a wealth of credible information and details about this specific film series, while also telling the story more generally about the complex development and production of all films, large and small.
I rate it four stars because what it does, it does well. No five because what it sets out to do is modest. There are no deeper truths lurking here.
actor Robert DeNiro, Vito Corleone is hard-working and loyal to his friends, even the ones who aren't as upstanding as he is. Having been victimized by the Mafia in Sicily, he's particularly incensed when he sees the injustices committed by Don Fanucci, the pompous neighborhood boss who demands protection money from every businessman in Vito's Lower East Side Italian community. One of Vito's friends shudders in Don Fanucci's presence and mutters that the man is part of the Black Hand.
