This book is written by Anne Schraff. The author’s purpose of writing this book is to tell us that there is phase in someone’s life when you go through fears. And sometimes it affects you deeply. For us to overcome our fears we have to be strong and ready for the challenges. Certain problem/disorder that we go through are not mentally or physically or maybe genetically from our parent but are made by our internal self. An such problems can only be solved by ourselves.
The book has created an impact In me that I would have disagree or see fictional without reading it. Most people believe as I used to believe that some people are just meant to be the way they are or they are just so unlucky to do the things that other normal kids do. I felt emotional after reading this book and somehow I feel a little regret about how I use to think. I have learned that there is more to life than just living. As the boy said “if I have to be someone or something then I have to do something.” {14}. I have being inspired after reading this book. I learn a lot.
I won’t deny I was deeply into this book. I found it very serious and truthful. You can notice the author’s tone by how she expresses her characters in the story. Harris is a boy that is always being bullied by how he looks and how lanky he was. He never knew he could do things that every normal boy does because he was always afraid they will laugh at him. I was so dramatic I thought I was the character. The story was quite amazing and relentless.
For my own understanding I don’t know about others this book seems alright to me and well-constructed. The book ended nicely and complete. My favorite dialogue from the book is when Harris’s dad was telling him that “Every man has a weakness and no matter how strong you may be today never forgets that you still have a weakness.{57}” I feel related to that thought and I realize that it’s very important for someone to be aware of their weaknesses. Shadows is quite an amazing book and teaches a lot; especially for teenagers. I loved it.
I will recommend all teenagers to read this book. It teaches a lot. It explains how life can change in a twinkle of an eye. And somehow learn to respect others because nothing last forever. One of Harris friend told him that “he could never be an athlete because he sucks at everything he does.”{78} The only guilt that Harris had was because he never tried earlier. Always learn to be and who you are.
I am a reading a book that is called Shadows of Guilt, which is about this young girl named Maya Archer. Maya finds herself caught in crossfire close to a corner store. But the shooter’s main target was named Dewayne Pike. Jaris Spain was a witness of the gunshot’s but he doesn’t know who got shot. So he tells his dad to come and pick him and his friend Trevor up from work because he was becoming scared. Pop told Jaris to stay clear and stay inside until he comes to pick him up.
When they get home, Trevor runs across the street to his house and Jaris goes to his house. when his dad opens the door, he sees his mom with a terrible blank look on her face and that’s when Jaris finds out who got killed. It was Maya archer She died at the age of 13. She was the sister of a junior at tubman High School named Sami . Maya was another best friend of Jaris, but Jaris found out the details of how she died. She got shot walking out of a deli. ‘’
So Jaris and his dad wanted to go over to the hospital she was at to pay their respects and to make sure that her family is okay, but the mom didn’t want them to go because she feared that the killers were still out looking for trouble. But Pops, Jaris and Chelsea go to the hospital and the mom decides to go. they make it to the Drew Hospital and when the get there, they sit and wait and they find out that she survived and that she got hit in the thigh and broke her femur. I honestly really like this book.Because people go through this type of problems every day. Another reason is because it is life like and it’s realistic. I think it sends A message to say be careful, watch your surroundings, and be safe. I would highly Recommend this book to people who live in an unsafe environment and that can relate To what they go through.
A young girl is shot and suddenly all of the talk at school is about who did it or why they did it. There were other people around when she was shot and some suspects said she wasn't the one the shooter was aiming for. The 13 year old girl, Maya, took a bullet meant for somebody else. One suspect says another kid named DaWayne ducked even before the shots were fired. Nobody is sure what really happened because so many rumors are spread everyday. People become suspicious and don't know why anybody would be aiming for DaWayne who is normally a good kid. People wonder about his past or what he did and they should because he has a dark one that caused him to be shot at and a little girl to be shot.
DeWayne- good student, good kid, smart, handsome, but has a dark past Maya- 13, young, cheerleader, gets shot Jaris- smart, funny, suspicious, wants what's right
The key issues in this book are gangs, guilt, shootings, murder, suspicion, and lying.
The dynamic character is DeWayne because what he did in the past cost a little girl a lot and now he feels bad. He has kept his past a secret but it is about to slip and he has to explain himself.
This book was pretty boring and included a lot of unimportant things. This book seemed old fashioned by the way people talked and what they did. It seems like all of the people in this book would be losers if they were in the real world currently. They don't really know what cool is.This book bored me. This book would be good for somebody that has read all of the there books in the world and this is the only book left.
The book was amazing. I loved it very much. It was a book about living in the ghetto and not being shot at for being a rival. The book starts off with poor little Maya being mistakingly being shot at. The person that was supposed to be shot was Dwayne. This story is pretty much about what happens when a person lies about there past. So little Maya is shot at. Jaris and his father go to the emergency room and visit Maya to see how she's doing. The next big thing in the story is when Dwayne's past catches up with him. Dwayne was driving drunk one night, he crossed a street and hit a girl, she was killed instantly.
Dwayne runs away from the accident and let's the girl he had the accident with die. The next thing is that Jaris and Dwayne look much alike. Jaris fell for a trap one night on the way from school. He got into a stranger's car he was the father of the girl that Dwayne killed in the hit & run accident. Jaris is at gunpoint with the stranger in his car and he has to find a way out. He talks to the stranger and he let's him go knowing that he got Dwayne mistaken with Jaris.. read the book to find out the end...
A shooting of a young girl leaving a deli prompts the usual suspicions about how it could have happened. Stray bullet, gang affiliation, retaliation, accident? When all is said and done, there was a lot of covering up especially because a boy nearby actually ducked when a car pulled up.
The lie that it was retaliation (not meant for her but the boy next to her) because his grandfather was a judge and put someone in jail. But as it turns out, the boy's family got him off on a drunken driving homicide and it was retaliation-- from the father of the young girl who is incensed that the boy was never charged with drunken driving and vehicular manslaughter because of his connections. The father's erratic behavior was sad but probably not far off the mark (he ends up dead by police gunfire after acting erratically to try to get retribution), but the boy who was the murderer ends up driving drunk AGAIN and putting more lives in danger.
Quick read, obviously, being the Urban Underground hi/lo series, but has an interesting premise, good backstory, and lots of juicy neighborhood gossip that keeps it fresh.

The type of books i like are mystery books. Thats why i really enjoyed shadows of guilt. The main charecters names are Jaris, sereeta, And,Dewayne. Jaris's friend got shot by a gangbanger. This gangbanger didn't want to shot her though. this gangbanger wanted to kill DeWayne. Why did he want to kill DeWayne, because he wanted to get back at DeWaynes grandpa for puting him in jail DeWayne said. So when DeWayne seen his car he ducked and Jarises friend was wlking behind DeWayne and she got shot instead.now she is sad because she can't dance anymore. someone sent Jarises friend a onehundred dollar bill and rosses. they think the gangbanger who shot her sent the gifts. Sereeta has a problem her stepdad and her mom haven't caame to any of her plays and she thinks they forgot all about her and she is very sad.
I thought this book was really good because this book tells u all the danger that people go through in there life there danger in there city when a young girl name maya was leaving out of the store she was behind a boy name dwayne and the people that was shooting was shooting at him and he ducked before they started shooting and maya got hit in a crossfire and her sister's bestfriend is trying to find out y dwayne ducked bfor the shooting started was it because he knew that they was gonna try and shoot at him or was it because he was scared.
From Urban Underground, a new series by Anne Schraff. A Bluford High Series Read-A-Like. I put them next to the Blufords and they all checked out right away. Different high school, different names, but a similar feel. When Maya Archer is accidentally shot in a drive by shooting, Jaris suspects the real target was DeWayne Pike. Is DeWayne hiding a secret past? If so, he may be putting all of his friends, including Jaris' crush, Sereeta in danger.
