Le médecin anglais James Braid (1795-1860) est l'inventeur du terme "hypnose". En 1841, il découvre le magnétisme auprès du magnétiseur français La fontaine. S'attachant à démontrer la fausseté du mesmérisme, il prouvera que l'hypnotisme et tous les phénomènes qui se produisent durant cet état sont dus uniquement à la condition physiologique et psychique du patient. Pour lui l'hypnotisme dépend d'une diminution de la faculté d'attention amenée par la pensée exclusivement attachée à un objet unique, à une pensée unique.
