A Human Touch

Pursuing justice...and love

Meredith Quinn had gone through pregnancy and childbirth alone. Evicted from her home, she'd been forced to live with her one-month-old daughter in her car. So suing her ex-lover for child support and working temporarily as a housekeeper for Mr. Cool, her attorney, was nothing to fear in comparison. Right?

Kyle Brooks felt he had been saddled with Meredith and her baby. He didn't want to become involved in her plight--only in the legal aspects of her lawsuit. After all, gaunt women with haunted eyes were not his type. But it was hard to deny the effect of Meredith's human touch on his body...and soul.

The title of this older contemporary romance aptly fit the message the author was trying to send to the reader. Meredith Quinn, a 23 year-old young mother, sought help from a priest after moving to Florida. She had followed her boyfriend to his new job hoping he would take the news of her becoming pregnant with good grace. Instead, he wanted nothing to do with her. She became homeless, had the baby, and this path eventually lead her to seek help. Hence, her meeting with Father Mike and eventually, Kyle Brooks.

Kyle Sanders Brooks, a lawyer, grew up with Father Mike. With some baggage from his past, he had made it his mission in life to prosecute wrongdoers. Especially men that had treated women indifferently. The problem was he saw everything in black and white; there was no gray area as far as he was concerned. And because of this he had difficulty with any lasting relationships.

Mike convinced Kyle to help Meredith seek child support, hire her as his housekeeper and give both Meredith and her baby a temporary home. Considering the difficulties she had to master, Meredith did a good job. Kyle, on the other hand, lacked compassion and empathy.

The upside was Ms. Sanders did a good job of presenting a more realistic picture of two people whom don't like/like each other. This was probably the reason A HUMAN TOUCH won a RITA award.

The hero Kylie is a hot-shot divorce attorney who keeps his emotions in check, when his friend asks him a favour - to take the homeless heroine and her one-month old in as his house-keeper and get palimony from the father who is refusing to take responsibility. The hero reluctantly takes her in and is very judgy of her, how she 'allowed' herself to be victimised by her ex, had a baby etc. The heroine despite being down on her luck stands up to him. These two become reluctant house-mates though the hero is very cautious of her at first. Gradually things change between them and the hero wants more but to the heroine theirs isn't an equal partnership as she is dependent on him and she has been hurt enough by what she went through. Honestly, I enjoyed this one despite the fact the hero was so quick to judge women and how in his opinion they allowed themselves to be victimised. The heroine rightly points out to him that it is easy to judge from the outside.

Kyle Brooks is a divorce lawyer who likes to keep to his self. His good friend Mark convinces him to take in a homeless woman with an infant as his live in maid. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Meredith Quinn a college graduate finds herself destitute and living out of her car with her one month old daughter. Unable to provide for herself and her child she turns to Father Mark for help.

A Human Touch lives up to its title quite nicely. The book easily evokes feelings of forgiveness, understanding and happiness through the journey of Kyle and Meredith's relationship. Each of these characters has a reason to keep their heart securely locked up behind closed doors. Kyle is surly and rude at times. Meredith is cautious and hesitant. Yet these two eventually meet in the middle and learn from each other.

This book is by no means perfect. For one thing it is very dated. Kyle reminds me of one of those 80's business type heroes. He is the one with all the influence and money, while the woman is destitute and helpless. However, Kyle's personality always has a ring of humility to it. He has enough vulnerability to redeem him and make him likeable. Some of the fashion descriptions and electronics used date the book. Overall it is an enjoyable read where the characters emotionally evolve. For a reader looking for a short enjoyable read, look no further.
