Claudio Magris

Claudio Magris was born in Trieste in the year 1939. He graduated from the University of Turin, where he studied German studies, and has been a professor of modern German literature at the University of Trieste since 1978.

His most well known book is Danubio (1986), which is a magnum opus. In this book Magris tracks the course of the Danube from its sources to the sea. The whole trip evolves into a colorful, rich canvas of the multicultural European history.

He's translated the works of Ibsen, Kleist and Schnitzler, among others, and he also published essays about Robert Musil, Jorge Luis Borges, Hermann Hesse and many others.

Este es un pequeño libro narrativo de ambigua clasificación ya que puede ser considerado un cuento, un libreto operístico o una pieza teatral sobre la vida del pintor Vito Timmel, que murió en un manicomio. Los personajes, incluso las cosas, hablan de una manera coral, removiendo la memoria, recitando o cantando en grupo. El propio Timmel vuelve del otro mundo para contar su trágica condición de artista genial y autodestructivo, bohemio y esperanzado. Por las escenas pasan enfermos mentales, reclusos, clientes de tabernas, enfermeros y diversos coros. Es un libro difícil en su estructura, por el coqueteo incesante con lo surrealista y como resultado, da un libro incómodo, de esos que marginan a lectores “promedio”.

Yo soy una lectora voraz y disfruto leer. En esta ocasión, el esnobismo y acuartelamiento estético me dejó fuera.
